Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ7-4096-A10Customer Review: My pleasure to review this product! Summary: 5 Stars
This is an exceptional buy for me. Considering my history with flash drives, I needed something that could withstand the force of an elephant. The titanium cruzer is the most sturdy flash I've ever purchased and I've purchased a bit of SanDisk drives in the past. If you are like me and are not the best at taking absolute care of your products, it's definitely for you. It seems very capable of withstanding some heavy use and doesn't seem likely to break or be damaged any time soon (which have all happened to me a few times before).
-It's practical and very portable for everday use if you have to consistently move files among computers, or from home, school and work etc. The amount of storage you should get of course would be influenced by your personal needs.
-I love that different applications can be tagged to the drive so you don't have to worry about having cetain programs installed on certain systems if you know you will have your san disk cruzer with you. This option makes it great if you are using public computer labs or another person's computer.
-The sign in password option is also a great security feature, so you can have greater control over who has access to your personal files.
-The file encryption and online backup are also some things that you can take advantage of. One awesome feature is that you can restore files you may have deleted by accident from your online storage location.
-File transfer time is also pretty reasonable. Can't complain there!
-The sliding USB connector also constitutes a great feature, because I have the tendancy in the past of loosing those flash drive covers.
So far, I have had no problems so I think it's an overall excellent product for the purchase price!
Customer Review: A BAD EXPERIENCE!! Summary: 1 Stars
The reviewers who rave about this product had a different experience. If you want to drive your car over it, buy it. But if you want to use it as it was intended, there are problems: my flash drive loaded something the moment I plugged it in. There was no input from me. Then, I tried to erase the U3 nonsense (a mess, as many Amazon reviews state), and I couldn't do so.
The company tells you to use their uninstaller. The uninstaller kept telling me that I had to close an open program on the drive. There wasn't any open program, so we couldn't proceed with this option.
An alternative method was to delete the icon on the system tray. Since there wasn't any icon on the tray, we couldn't do this either.
We stopped reading the third method (to do something before you install the item) as the item had already installed itself.
An email for support produced a further complication: an 'EBOX' had been created for me which I had to access with a password - which we had to write down in a secure place. Big deal! We go to the ebox, click on something, and lo and behold! - a message appears from a support person, tellling me to use the 3 methods listed above. My email call for help had already stated that the three methods didn't work.
In all fairness, we hadn't registered the item at the time of the email (because the serial number was too small for any of us to see without a magnifying glass and it is printed in Grey text on a Grey surface.
Right now, we are involved in a lottery which will determine which of us will have the great pleasure of being allowed to throw the item under the wheels of the next large truck which passes by our office.
Customer Review: Sleek, substantial metal... The Terminator of flash drives! Summary: 5 Stars
I have a bunch of flash drives, and this one is my current favorite, probably because I get a kick out of the retracting USB plug (no cap to lose!), and the fact that it's built like a tank. Be advised that it also weighs it. So, if you're the type who spends $50 for a carbon fiber gear shift knob so your car will go 0.00001 second faster off the line, you might want to get a Kingston or other plastic model flash drive. (Those might even float in water, if you care about that. This one certainly will not.)
On the other hand, when it comes time to whip out the thumb drives at the office, this one certainly adds a level of cool professionalism. It's the Terminator of USB drives.
The U3 thing drove me nuts. The last thing I need is yet another layer of software added to Windows. Less is definitely more in this department. So, I found some U3 remover software and that took care of that. (But I also know how to find and install "portable apps" if I should desire them. Probably not for the faint of heart.)
The memory in these things doesn't seem to be the fastest in the world... even Sandisk now (5/08) has a "Ducati" model that they say is their fastest. If I wanted speed, I'd look for a Lexar solution... they make that fast camera memory. I might do that for my next one of these.
Finally, when considering small valuable droppable items, I look for ways to keep from losing them... I like to add a short loop of climbing accessory cord with a big fat knot on the end, to make it easy to grab (and attach to a carabiner, etc.). That only works if there's a provision for attachment, which this one has.
Customer Review: Indispensable Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this drive over a year ago and have to report that it has never failed me. I have plugged it into virtually every kind of computer out there and it has always allowed me to connect and transfer files. Quite plainly, I love it.
It's big enough to be able to accomodate a single layer DVD into it but not quite big enough to accomodate a big dual layer DVD on it so can't quite transfer dual layer ISO files but for smaller files, it's perfect.
I'm thinking of getting a 32GB version so that I can carry complete ISO images of DVDs but I'm going to keep this 4GB in my bag as a means of moving files quickly and easily.
Of note, thumb drives in general are a security risk so be careful what you store on it. I keep this 4GB file entirely empty and hand it out whenever I need someone to give me some files (if you keep your budget or salary tables on your thumb drive, whomever you loan your thumb drive to can easily copy your files to their machine) --- for this reason, thumb drives are outlawed in some organizations.
However, I think their usability outstripps their risks. At these prices, there's no reason you shouldn't have one of these 4GB nice titanium drives. It comes with U3 software which helps you eject the drive from computers that are not plug and play. It's also tiny and has a little hole for a keyring or for a neckline. I can't say enough nice things about this little piece of hardware.
On this drive, it comes with a metal case and a retractable USB plug - it works great. It's not waterproof but it's very sturdy so defintely can be thrown into a computer bag.
Customer Review: Cruzer Titanium with U3 Summary: 5 Stars
Our group bought a dozen of these for personal backup and file synchronization. U3 is a fantastic technology, easy to install and use, built in repository access - the only shortcoming is that it doesn't work with Macs or Linux (at least not yet). Plug in the USB stick, and it mounts two drives, one acts like an auto-mounted CD drive and runs the Launchpad, the second is the standard drag and drop disk.
The Launchpad includes access to the drag and drop disk, a variety of U3 applications, easy to use configuration, password protection, and my favourite - an EJECT button (to safely remove the memory stick).
We didn't like most of the bundled software. Cruzersync looks like it works well for synching Outlook and web browser content, but it was very difficult to use for synching data in multiple locations, and the password manager wasn't what we wanted. We replaced these (and removed all the trialware) with Allway "Synch n Go" (fantastic) and RoboForm2Go (also excellent) - both are easy to use, and have free U3 versions. We also kept the Avast Anti-virus, for when you need an external computer scan. The dark horse of the pre-installed software was Skype. At first I didn't see the advantage, until I was on the road using someone else's computer.
At this point the only problem we've had was when U3 detected an update to Launchpad, I selected yes, it saved all of the data, but deleted the installed U3 programs, and when I tried to re-install Avast it said the trial period had expired. Otherwise everything else installed smoothly, and all the configuration settings were retained.
