Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Micro 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ6-8192-A11

Customer Review: Stopped working after 30 days.
Summary: 1 Stars

I was given this product as a birthday gift, so it wasn't possible to return it. The product worked well on my Mac and I used in on the PC's at school. I can still retrieve my data from the drive, but the problem is, that the drive is telling me that there is no more room left for anything else. This is remarkable, since all that I stored on the drive was about several dozen word documents over the course of 30 days. Every time I try to save something more to it, it tells me that there is either no room left, or that the drive is damaged. Trust me when I say that I took very good care of this flash drive, so the fact that it could be damaged is very strange to me. Now I have to buy a new drive, and I was looking forward to using this one for many years to come. How unfortunate. If anyone has any ideas as to how I should try to fix this problem, please leave me a comment below.

Customer Review: This is a waste of money
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this device to store and carry files. I liked the 8 MB size and figured that since I had used other SanDisk products this would be just fine. And the price was very good as well. I tried just putting it in the USB port like I do my Sony Micro Vaults and it did nothing. No recognition of anything in the port by Windoze XP. I tried all of the available USB ports. No results. No software came with this gem.

So I went to the SanDisk web site and downloaded the "U3" software as instructed by the site. The software downloaded fine, but refuses to install because it says (after I have plugged in the Cruzer 8MB) that there is nothing there. Wonderful. A piece of junk and useless software. I have tried installing the LP Installer a dozen ways from Sunday and there is no way that it will install. Time to throw it away and go back to Sony. This was no bargain.

Customer Review: Hard to lock open
Summary: 3 Stars

Generally, it works. I reformatted mine as Mac OS journaled, and later reformatted it as FAT so I can use it on Windows too. Mac OS sees it either way.

One complaint I have is that sometimes it doesn't lock in the open position, so pushing on the sleeve closes it, rather than inserting it into the USB jack.

The status light blinks continuously, which is mildly annoying. After a while of inactivity, and when ejected/unmounted, it blinks slowly ("sleeping"). I would prefer a solid light.

In a quick-and-dirty test, I wrote a 75MB file from hard drive to USB drive in 11 secs (55 Mbps), and read it back in 1 sec (USB's 480 Mbps).

Update: in a more realistic test, wrote a 2.2GB file from hard drive to USB drive in 873 secs (20 Mbps), and read it back in 269 secs (67 Mbps). So the sustained throughput is much less than USB 2's 480 Mbps.

Customer Review: A Valuable Little Tool
Summary: 5 Stars

The SanDisk Cruzer Micro flash drive is a 8 GB USB flash drive that will fit right in your pocket or wallet. It plugs into your USB port on your computer and you can transfer files between two computers. I have been able to transfer videos from one computer to another which enabled me to take the video home to work on. I like the fact that this little flash drive does not have a seperate cover. It just slides out and you plug it in, it lights up and there you go!

The first flash drive I bought a few years back worked good but was around $60. The SanDisk's price is more affordable and inexpensive for what it does. It is reliable and easy to use. You just copy the file onto the little drive and take it with you. It is little so I store it in a jar so that I don't lose it or break it. I have had mine for well over a year and use it all the time and highly recommend it.

Customer Review: U3 technology to automatically load software on your PCs
Summary: 1 Stars

I'm not a big fan of technology that tries to automatically load software on my PC, especially without asking my permission. I deleted the software Sandisk preloaded on the USB flash drive, but wait: this device mounts as *two* USB drives, and one is read-only and looks like a 5 MB CD-ROM to the OS. It has an autorun script and zipped software on it, and the only way I've found to keep it off the computer is to not use this product.

I guess Sandisk's business model is to have the bloatware makers subsidize this product. And, it's in the bloatware makers interest to have unsuspecting users loading their wares onto multiple machines.

Since this isn't clearly explained on the packaging, it seems sort of sneaky to me that they'd try to spread their software this way -- the type of thing that inspires class action lawsuits. Hence, the low rating.
