Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Micro 512 MB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (SDCZ4-512-A10, Retail Package)Customer Review: Small and solid Summary: 5 Stars
Sandisk's site claims you only need drivers for 98SE. I have only used it on XP and a co-worker's 2000 Pro. It plugs in and works the first time without a reboot. Sandisk claims Windows ME will also use it without drivers. The loop-hook is metal inside the slightly soft plastic covering, so it's not going to break. You are far more likely to break the included string lanyard or plastic quick-disconnect hook for the included necklace. Put this on something with a good metal ring and it's not going to break and fall off. The Blue LED is bright, and stays on when idle (in the computer, see below re: MP3 Companion). That helps you remember to take it with you. It blinks when read/write operations are happening, reminding you not to pull it out until it's done. There is a note in the included quick-start guide about which operating systems you should use the "remove device" tool with. The MP3 Companion works well, I gave it 4 our of 5 stars. The blue LED is only on when the player reads in the whole track as it starts to play it, otherwise it's off to conserve the AAA battery's life.
Customer Review: The best 512MB you can find Summary: 5 Stars
The Micro continues to be my favorite flash drive, design and functionally; I have Micros of several sizes from 128MB to 1GB and I intend to get more as the capacity increases.
This device transfers data to and from devices that support USB Flash drives (computers etc.) very quickly and efficiently, and requires absolutely no drivers in plug-and-play operating systems like Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Mac OS X. Use it as storage for your MP3 player, keep your important documents backed up on it, or even work right the drive--with performance like this, the possibilities are endless. The Micro also supposedly comes with built-in security for each unit, but I've never used it.
The slim 'Micro' physical design also deserves a standing ovation. The actual unit is very short and isn't much wider than a USB port, so it fits anywhere. The cap is pretty smug and when you take it off to use the drive, it fits conveniently on the reverse end. If you loose the cap, it comes with extras, or you can buy them separately.
Customer Review: No good on protected computers and not really 512MB Summary: 1 Stars
I own many Sandisk products and have been a big fan. The Micro, however, requires that your computer first install a small program in order to be recognized properly. Without the program, your computer will only recognize it as non-writable media.
So if you need to use it on a protected computer, such as those in corporate offices that only allow the administrator to install software, it will not work.
The Micro is actually divided in two sections. One is the non-writable section that contains the program that remembers your settings. It takes up about 5MB. The rest is writable space.
This means you don't actually have 512MB since part of it is taken up by the program and is inaccessible. Personally, I consider this misleading. Moreover, I don't like any product that automatically installs a required program. Sandisk should allow you to format the drive and use that section that contains the program and make it an option to use it just like any other flash drive.
Customer Review: So far so good Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a college student and need something to carry around my papers and other files such as (mp3s, pictures, school work). I bought this for 25 dollars including the 15 dollar rebate. So far, it's really small and fits in my key chain perfectly. I use it often to transfer music and documents from the computer lab to my laptop. The transfer speed is pretty fast, it takes about 7 mins total to transfer all 512mb, perhaps a little longer depending on the number of files. For small files that are between 0-200mb, it takes seconds to transfer, which is very convenient when you're on the go. Two other colorful (pink and teal/green-blue covers are provided). This is one of the best deals you can get. 512mb for 25 bucks is pretty nice although I have heard that you could get the Pony 1gb for 20 including rebate if you're lucky to find it on sale. I had two SanDisk 256mb Cruzers (lost them) and they worked well, but since I lost them, I decided to get this one. Twice the memory and twice as small. Good stuff.
Customer Review: Sadly Disappointing Product Summary: 1 Stars
This is the third portable USB drive that I have purchased. Each purchase was driven by the fact that I constantly needed to upgrade to one with more memory. At first this seems like something that had been well-designed, but within the first use I clearly saw that their product designers/engineers no nothing about what a consumer looks for in this type of product. They were too busy putting the blue light up feature in that they completely ignored everything else. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SANDISK PRODUCT AGAIN.
CONS: LID IS LOOSE, COMES WITH AN ADDITIONAL PLASTIC THING THAT HAS NO DESCRIPTION FOR WHAT IT IS FOR, DESIGNED THE KEY LOOP ON THE WRONG END OF THE PRODUCT (My previous Sony had an option to add the key attachment to either end, which is helpful so your keys aren't hanging off your computer), AND WORST OF ALL - THEY MARKET THIS PRODUCT TO BE FAST (HI-SPEED USB 2.0) Well my Sony USB was 2.0 as well and it was 4X's faster! I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS PRODUCT.
