Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Micro 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ6-4096-E11Customer Review: ReadyBoost capable Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this product specifically for use with a Windows Vista laptop. As advertised, it was ReadyBoost compatible. I haven't done any benchmarks on it but my Vista laptop is now considerably faster than before (only had 1GB RAM). It feels flimsier than my older Cruzer Mini and Cruzer Micro flash drives but only time will tell if it's as durable as older models.
U3 is irritating and for once, UAC on Vista proved useful as it stopped the software from auto-installing. I downloaded a U3 Uninstaller from the Sandisk website and it now functions like normal flash drives. For U3 functionality without the hassle, there are portable versions of several programs (including OpenOffice, Firefox and Thunderbird) from [...]. Best of all, they don't leave a footprint in the host PC.
Overall, the new Cruzer Micro works great as a ReadyBoost drive. Minus one star for the flimsy plastic body. I decided not to deduct another star because of the pre-installed U3 software as it is easy enough to remove with the uninstaller.
Customer Review: SanDisk 4 GB Cruzer Micro Summary: 4 Stars
This a nice little USB drive. It seems fast and mounts quickly in the 3 OSes I've tested it on. (BSD, Linux and Windows) The main feature I like about th e SanDisk cruzers is the sliding USB plug portion. I've always hated losing the endcaps and messing up the plug part of the drive. The case is plastic and solid. It's slightly wider than some other USB drives, and that occasionally causes it not to fit when I'm using more than one USB attachment in side by side USB configurations. I'm also suspect of the strength of the metal pin in the corner. I wonder if the metal pin that is used to connect a string or lanyard to, will break out of the plastic case at some point. I'd really prefer the titanium version, but it is much more expensive. Last, the plug in portion is always open and stuff like lint, dirt and small things can get in there and cause a problem. Now, for a really small, narrow USB drive, try the PNY mini attache. The issue there is that it tops out at 2 GB.
Customer Review: Flimsy. Summary: 2 Stars
So far I've owned three Cruzer Micros: 256MB, 1GB, and 4GB, and the quality has steadily declined. The 256MB was encased in 1/16" of hard rubber on all sides, you could step on it without breaking it, and it felt like it was even waterproof (never tried :) The 1GB (with soft rubber "Skins") unit was about the same size, but the three skins degraded to shreds in a year in my pocket with keys rubbing them. Luckily the naked brushed-metal Cruzer looks great and doesn't scratch. The 4GB model is even bigger than the original 256MB one but this time has a cheap plastic exterior, and the LED is on only one side (the sliding panel glows) instead of on the end like the previous models. Guess which direction it faces when I plug it into the handy USB plug on my monitor? You guessed it. Away from me! I popped the case off, and the insides are exactly the same size as the 1GB model. They need to go back to the original casings which deserved the name "Micro".
Customer Review: U3 is cool. Flashing LED Annoying Summary: 3 Stars
First Big Note: If all you want is a USB drive for storage DO NOT buy U3 enabled technology.
The Bad First: There is a flashing LED that is beyond annoying. It is large (3/8" x 1/2")! I have to cover it up each time I use it which is a pain. I took 2 stars off just for this.
The Good: If you compute on more than one computer, or use other computers, U3 enabled technology can be great as it allows you to carry software along with your files. Such packages like OpenOffice (Office Suite that will open Word, Excel, Powerpoint docs), FileZilla (Ftp client), Skype, Avast Anit-Virus, Foxit PDF Reader, Opera and Firefox browsers can be downloaded and installed for free from u3.com. I am a developer and also bought a version of UltraEdit for $40 that runs on U3.
I paid $10 + S/H through Amazon.
PS - SanDisk...lose the flashing LED...What were you thinking?
Customer Review: Would be 5 stars without U3 Summary: 4 Stars
I really like my 4GB cruiser. It has proven a useful and reliable piece of technology. I went with 4GB so that I'd always have space to transfer something as large as a DVD ISO. In practice, I should have gone with the 8GB because I usually have 100-200MB of files on the drive which reduce the capacity to just under what I need to haul around a large DVD ISO.
I'd give this product 5 stars except for an annoying "feature" that SanDisk provides- U3 support. U3 is just plain annoying. Fortunately, it is easy to permanently remove U3 from the device and that is precisely what I've done.
The device has proven durable. One time I accidentally dropped it into a full glass of water (don't ask) and it was not affected at all. I hope it never happens again but it was nice to know that the product is fairly durable in case of accidents!
