Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Micro 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ6-4096-E11

Customer Review: BE CAREFUL
Summary: 4 Stars

I mainly use my drive for playing mp3's in my car stereo. I plugged the 4gb drive into the computer and it starts running all the U3 stuff. I close that down and open the drive. I delete all the u3 files. I copy mp3's to it and forget about it.

The next day, I plug it in my car and it says no music data present. I get to work and plug it in. All the u3 stuff starts running again. I check the drive and the u3 files are back! What was worse is that all my other files were obliterated!!!!!

I have discovered that there is a U3 uninstall tool that will permanently erase the U3 stuff and turn it into a 'dumb' drive if you so desire. [...]

So be careful when you get one and don't just start copying files willy-nilly like I did.

Customer Review: took a while to kill it...
Summary: 4 Stars

Deleting U3 is now mandatory, and I have all the delete utilities handy for whenever I buy a U3 loaded USB. The good news is that the crap that is loaded means a lower price due to the mfg being paid for the U3 sw.

That said, I killed this thing just the other day (forgets formatting, requires re-format, loses all files, etc.) after trying to copy a large VM onto is that was just about 1GB. Once blown, it will reformat fine, but you still can't copy files to it after that-same error.

Up until I killed it, it was my #2 favorite USB (the 4gb, we're talking about), next to the bullet-proof 2GB PNY. Length of time to kill... about 13 months-not bad.

What would warrant 5 stars? Not being able to kill it, for one thing!!!

:)

Customer Review: Unwanted software loaded on drive
Summary: 1 Stars

I've had this product for over a year now and rarely use it because it is inconvenient and a hassle to use. All I want is a jump drive that I can stick into a USB port and use, thats it. Without getting technical, this item has extra software loaded on it so that it requires TWO open drives on your computer to be fully functional (i.e. I needed an F: drive and a G: drive in order to use this on my home computer) When I tried to use this at work it failed because most of the drives on my work computer are in use. Consequently I was unable to use this item without totally reassigning my drive mappings which is a pain to do. Therefore, I have an old PNY 1 GB that I use now because it is hassle free and plug and play. No pre-loaded software, no extra drives, no problems.

Customer Review: Reliable And Useful
Summary: 5 Stars

4GB of memory is great. The U3 software is actually really cool and even if you don't like it you shouldn't have a problem removing it, provided you're not stupid enough to forget to check the manufacturer's website. Just to clear things up, U3 is not installed on your hard drive. I repeat: U3 IS NOT INSTALLED ON YOUR HARD DRIVE. Stop complaining about the flash drive installing software on your computer without permission. The program runs off the flash drive so you will not be able to remove it in the "Add/Remove Programs" tool of your PC. Go to U3.com if you want to have it removed. To wrap things up, this flash drive is cool, cheap, and is useful if you want to carry Firefox or other useful programs around without leaving a trace on the computer you're working from.

Customer Review: Great hardware, aggravating software.
Summary: 4 Stars

The SanDisk Cruzer series has been good to me. I have the 1GB model, and when I needed some more mobile storage and saw the 4GB model on sale, I jumped at the chance. Functionally, it's the same great flash drive with more room for files. People also love the sliding retractable port, for silly reasons.

My only complaint is the U3 software that's embedded on the drive is marginally useful, and usually just plain annoying. It's buggy and sluggish, and doesn't add much to what should be a simple device for transferring files. Uninstalling the U3 software is a chore, despite attempts to make it look easy.

I'd certainly buy another Cruzer, and I likely will when 4GB doesn't cut it, but I'll be sure to research the U3 software next time.
