Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Micro 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ6-4096-A11

Customer Review: Best bang for your bucks with a minor flaw.
Summary: 4 Stars

The price of this drive is unbeatable. The hardware is good. I've been using it for 3 months since December 2007 without any problem. There are somethings you should know to make it work well.

1. DO NOT USE the free encryption software called U3 that comes with it.
Some people posted on Amazon that their data was wiped out without warning after they updated this software by clicking "Yes" when prompted.

As for me, uninstalled U3 by following the link in the sofware and visited the site at http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1415. After that I use PGP to encrypt my files. The free version of PGP does not work with Vista but I'm using XP.

2. I like the extractable jack because it replaces the cap. That means I'll never lose the cap again! In the past I lost 2 caps of 2 other usb flash drives. However this design leaves a gap on the body of the drive after the cap is extracted into the body. There is a possibility that rain can get into the drive through this slit.

Customer Review: Sandisk Cruzer is N I C E
Summary: 5 Stars

I have 3 Sandisk Cruzer flashdrives, and my son also has one I gave him. I had a 4gb titanium Cruzer but that got lost. Anyway, I really, really like the cruzer. I have two 4gb and one 8gb and use them nearly every day to store files or music, swap photos with my family or friends even used it to load itunes on my dad's pc when his internet was down and he couldnt download. I especially like the password protection feature when you use the U3 software ( you have to go to the Sandisk U3 website to get it-its free) for obvious reasons. You can also put games on your Cruzer at the U3 website, thats a cool little perk, too. Well, I truly like to use and highly recommend the Sandisk Cruzer flash drive at any gb capacity. Even their customer service is great. I bought one online (the seller will remain anonymous) and had doubts about its authenticity when it got to me- so I contacted them by email and they were very prompt to respond and confirm for me that what I had was indeed their product.

Customer Review: Not for carrying in pocket
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm work for an insurance agency in the IT Department and bought this drive soon after graduating. It lasted for 3-4 years in my pocket, but then stopped registering on any computer I plugged it into. I'm guessing the connectors eventually wiggled loose. I did use it pretty constantly during those 3 years, but I'd like a drive that lasts a bit longer. Luckily I did weekly backups of the data that was on the drive, so I didn't lose much. If you're going to use the San disk drives, I recommend removing the U3 product as soon as you get it. There are other products that will serve the same purpose and won't install on your computer or erase your data. [...] is one that I use on a daily basis.

Form factor is ok at best. When plugging the drive into the machine, make sure your fingers are on the side. If you accidentally press the button while inserting the drive will just slide back into the casing. A slight annoyance, but not what you want when time is key.

Customer Review: AND IT LOOKS GOOD TOO!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I found myself carrying 4 small flash drives in my pocket and decided it was time to get a single drive that would meet the bulk of my needs. THIS IS IT!!! At work I have XP Pro and at home and on my laptop I run VISTA. The U3 works seamlessly between the two operating systems. I appreciate the password protection since I keep school records on this drive. All of the trial software had pretty icons but all went away to free up usable space. I took the black clasp from a PNY neck strap and converted it into a nice key chain attachment so when the drive is not being used it makes a darn nice key fob too. I will probably buy another in the near furture for my wife. We both work in the same school system and work on the same server. Other reviews I read would lead one to believe this unit had some serious flaws. My opinion is they have some serious pickiness issues. The drive is as advertised and it performs extremely well.

Customer Review: Wish I'd known...
Summary: 3 Stars

See the translucent part on the top of this flash drive? The white part in the picture? Okay, that part flashes bright orange when plugged into your laptop. By bright I mean "glaring in your eyes bright" and by flashing I mean "like a disco club". So under Features where it says "Amber LED", take that seriously.

Seriously, SanDisk, what were you thinking?

I picked this little guy up because he was inexpensive and I needed something to accelerate Vista. Having first taped over the strobing light to keep it from giving me a migraine, and thus rendering the retractable feature non-functional, I eventually gave up and threw this drive away altoghether.

If you want a little travel flash drive for quick in-and-out memory use I suppose I could recommend this one: it's fast, reliable, small, easy, and light. However, as a ReadyBoost solution, as it's marketed, absolutely not.
