Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Micro 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ6-016G-A11Customer Review: Great price, working good so far Summary: 5 Stars
Note: It comes in the format FAT32 which for some odd reason will not transfer files over 4GB in size.
Let me start off with why I purchased this product. I got this product because I wanted to transfer a 14GB and a 8GB Virtual Machine Image. I got the USB yesterday and I went to put the VM images on there. When I tried the bigger one it wouldn't go on because it said "USB Full" I figure it was a bug and tried again. Looked up possible reasons why it may happen and realized that it may need to be reformatted. Anyways, I reformatted it to NTFS instead and it transfers fine. Kind of dumb that its such a big USB and FAT32 for some odd reason has a 4GB cap on max transfer size. Now one thing I find weird is I have the exact same USB in 8GB and its FAT32 and never really gave me a problem with a big file. Then again, I have only really tried less than 5 GB files so maybe 5GB is the real cap.
Regardless, just note that if you are using this to transfer 1 big file that you may need to format it to NTFS (newer/better if you ask me anyways just a little bit slower transfering). I'm fine with it being NTFS however it was rather frustrating at first becuase obviously a customer just expects it to work as soon as you get it.
Also note that the "real size" of this USB is 14.9GB. Thats how it is with any real USB though, they always have it a little lower than the size it says due to the required stuff to make it work.
Customer Review: Nice drive that works with Mac OS X Summary: 4 Stars
It's nice to have so much storage in such a small space. The retractable USB port is the best feature -- I hate losing those little caps that other brands have.
Like some other reviewers, I'm on a Mac and I'm happy to report that the drive works great and can be reformatted using OS X's Disk Utility. Some earlier U3 drives had problems with Macs.
The only drawback to this drive is its blinking light. When you plug the Cruzer into your laptop, you'll have a bright orange pulsing light in your peripheral vision. Very annoying! Fortunately I only use this drive for short periods of time, to transfer files between computers. If I was using it all day long I would need some way to cover the light.
UPDATE: This drive worked great between Macs. I eventually used this drive to move some files from my Mac to a PC. When I plugged the drive into the PC, the U3 partition was still there, and U3 ran automatically on the PC. Even though I had previously reformatted the drive using my Mac, it didn't get rid of U3! Unfortunately, it appears that U3 went through its "first time" wizard and reformatted the drive, causing it to lose the data I had copied from my Mac. I ran the U3 uninstaller (available from the support section of the U3 web site). Once U3 was truly gone, it behaved as a normal drive.
Customer Review: Massive Data Loss!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I have never had any significant issues with flash drives before. When I bought this flash drive earlier this year I liked how it attached to my keychain and I was impressed with the memory capacity for the price. I had no issues with my purchase until this past weekend. I was trying to copy some pictures from my laptop to the flash drive to give to some relatives who were visiting and I kept getting access errors from the flash drive. Finally after a few tries I was able to get it to read. I was worried because I had so many valuable files stored on the drive so I went ahead and copied them all to my computer to make sure I didn't lose any.
Fast forward to today. I was looking for some of the information I had copied from the flash drive. I went to the folder I had copied the info too and everything was GONE!!! The folder structure was there, but everything in the folders was GONE!!! Everything!!! I had pictures, personal budgets, lists I had kept for years of various things and they are all gone.
Yes, I know I should have a proper backup plan, but regardless this device failed catastrophically and I am very disappointed. I would be very apprehensive about buying this product. My situation may be 1 in 1,000 but you may also lose all your data.
Customer Review: The Flash Drive itself is good, DELETE THE U3 SOFTWARE IMMEDIATLY!!! Summary: 3 Stars
This, from a pure technical standpoint, is a great product. It's not even close to 16 gigs however, more like 14-15. The transfer speeds are alright but can be a little slower than typical usb 2.0 flash drives. The keyring that is supposed to hold a strap is of horrible quality. It will eventually bend and break off, in a short period of time. And, as with all flash drives, it's easy to lose especially if you're a student at school, and the weak keyring doesn't help matters. The slide out USB connector is nice and allows for increased portability and safety from dirt and debris. There is an orange light that emits from the drive.
Now then, the main issue with this drive is the U3 software. YOU ABSOLUTLEY DO NOT NEED THIS SOFTWARE. WHEN GIVEN THE OPTION, COMPLETELY REMOVE IT. U3 software, to be blunt, sucks, and will result in various compatability issues when plugging your drive into other computers. For example, you will plug this drive into a computer and nothing will show up besides a "U3 system CD" icon, with no way to even access the drive. Do yourself a favor and immediatly uninstall and remove U3 system from the drive, it's horrible. Once you do all that, this drive is great, especially since it's on sale.
Customer Review: Works just right for me Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this thumb drive to transfer items between my main computer and my netbook. I can store videos, documents, music, etc. on this drive for travel.
I decided to try out the U3 software just to see how it works out. It is a nice little feature...brings up a "start" menu with all your programs that you can run from it. Easily "shuts down" the drive for removal. I just found that I didn't want to use any of the programs they have available (or pay for any of them for that matter). It was a breeze to remove (go through U3 settings and there is a selection for removing it). I did download the tool from the SanDisk website in case I change my mind and want to use it later.
I've loaded this little guy up with videos and watched them on my netbook with no problems (I didn't notice any skipping or delays in the video)--makes it like a little portable DVD player. This little drive makes it easy for me to have a nice little library to travel with.
The orange light is a little annoying. It is constantly blinking when the drive is being accessed. I do wish there were some way to disable the feature.
All in all a good product. The orange light keeps it from getting 5 stars.
