Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ36-004G-A11Customer Review: Design flaw overshadows otherwise fine device Summary: 2 Stars
To me, and to many others, flash drives are about data portability. My current Lexar Sport flash drive is always handy on my key chain, held in place by it's overkill rubber security cap/band (), which took years to finally fail. Luckily Lexar provides the ability to order replacement caps, and I have a stash of 5, but Lexar hasn't updated their drive line and the capacity stands at 1GB, so we move on in search of someone offering a larger capacity drive and comparable or better physical and data security. I dabbled shortly with a 4GB Kingston Data Traveler, but the flimsy plastic loop on it broke within 48 hrs of use, and now sits unused in a desk drawer. Back to the handy Lexar Sport while we searched for another contender. This SanDisk Cruzer appeared to have all the goods - small and convenient retractable USB plug, U3 software and the ability to password protect your data, and previous versions of Cruzers that I've seen have been on a person's key chain.
And there's where this drive fails to deliver - SanDisk has inexplicably failed to provide any way to secure it physically to an object. Most flash drives these days come with some sort of attachment mechanism to put it on a key chain or other device so that it remains on your person. You put it on something you're likely not to lose - a key chain, a backpack, a body piercing... ;)
SanDisk has provided a small metal post embedded in the lower corner of the drive, but the post is too far recessed to get a regular keychain ring on it. A search on the SanDisk forum uncovered others scratching their heads on this omission, and at least one tale of a shattered Cruzer when someone tried to force one on a normal sized key chain ring. SanDisk should have provided some piece to bridge that function for the end user - a very small ring, or something of that nature. Without the piece, you aren't left with any options outside of perhaps thread or some other silly compensatory setup.
For those who are just going to store it in a desk drawer or backpack compartment, leave it plugged into your PC/laptop, or otherwise don't need it to be attached to something for travel, then it's still a viable piece. It comes with U3 software and has the ability to password protect your data - which you'll need if it's going to be at greater risk for loss due to the aforementioned attachment issue. Good stuff, thoughtful stuff, which just further begs the question why the essentials weren't taken care of.
Mine is being sent back due to the physical flaw...
