Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk 8GB/30MB Ultra CF Card ( SDCFH-008G-A11, US Retail Package )

Customer Review: Poor results with San Disk Ultra II
Summary: 1 Stars

Earlier today I was photographing in Arches National Park in the Balanced Rock area. I use a Kodak digital camera with a full frame SLR and Canon lenses and take raw images (about 12-14 MP). I use a 10 sec timer and wait for the image to be download to the disk before taking another photo. At the BR area I used two 1 GB Compact Flash cards from Kodak (made by Lexar) and a Lexar Platinum II 2 GB CF card. All three were bought from Walmart in Silver City, NM, in May 2006. I then moved to the Courthouse Rock area and put in a 2GB Ultra II San Disk CF card. The card was previously erased on my computer and then with quick format in my camera (space for 63 images). After two pictures the card said it was full. I continued to click for photos and a card error saying that that the image could not be saved. I tried several quick formats in the camera. Removing the battery or turning off the camera did not correct the problem. I then switched to the 8GB San Disk Ultra II CF card and had similar problems at first, but was eventually able to take several hundred photos although I have not evaluated them to see if they turned out. The two cards were bought from the Mayfield Heights, Ohio, Micro Center store in May 2007 although both have a copyright of 2004. Today was not excessively hot or cold.
With the first three cards I mentioned I have often taken 2 or 3 images in quick succession without any problems, but not with San Disk cards. Also the three cards have never given any problems on days below freezing or above 100 degrees. In 2003 when I first got my camera I bought two 1 GB and one 2 GB San Disk Ultra II CF cards. The 2 GB card held only 600 MB and was returned to San Disk. After a few months San Disk gave me a new 2 GB card (not used today). I will have to buy some more Lexar cards because I no longer trust the San Disk CF cards. I was trying to take panoramas and with the sun light changing the delays caused by the card problems made it difficult. I suppose that San Disk sells higher grade cards because it knows that these cards are of low quality. Howard McPherson, Moab, Utah

Customer Review: Compact Flash card
Summary: 4 Stars

This came rather quickly, which is nice. I don't like that I paid tax on having it shipped UPS, & UPS sends it snail mail (cheaper).
I checked out the San Disk site before ordering this one, & they suggested this (not the faster cards), for my camera. In using a converted SDHC card, I found that I could have used the faster CF card. But you want to be sure & not over buy, all of the time.
Anyhow, this is up to 15Mbs or a rating of 200 (on the package & web site). It writes fast enough for slow shots. Now keep in mind that I shoot RAW+Jpeg, so the camera has to write two files, & one of them is 11 megs always.
In using my other Ultra II card, I know that it's a bit faster just shooting RAW, & way faster just shooting Jpeg.
The card holder that comes with this, is larger than the usual ones. Not an issue unless you only have room in your bag for the smaller one. I can see the larger one is good if you are wearing gloves or mittens, which I'm sure is why San Disk did this.
Overall, the card is fine, is what I expected & of course I trust San Disk to take & hold my shots & not lose them. They have a website listed on the package, where you can download a demo of recovery software, if that's an interest to you. In the 11 years I've been shooting digital, I've only had one card error with San Disk, & that was while transferring data files on the computer. To note. They did replace the card super fast when that happened.

Customer Review: Huge, Fast and Reliable

I am very fond of my Sandisk cards.
I also have a Sandisk 4.0 GB Extreme card, and did an interesting comparison. I held a recording time race between Ultra and Extreme, here in my livingroom. Recording a big buffer full of photos in multiple trials, the recording times were identical. The more expensive Extreme was no faster than this card. In my case, the recording rate has to be limited by my camera, a Nikon 8800.
Having a reliable card as large as 8.0 GB is very helpful.
My cards have traveled to Alaska, Mexico, and Ecuador, and have had to function in all sorts of conditions. They have recorded 100,000+ photos, each of which I desperately did not want to loose. I back them up as often as I can, but I still worry, and I have lost photos when other cards failed.
I am pleased to say I have never lost a photo from a Sandisk card - in spite of the abuse I put them through.
Last week I filled up my Sandisk Ultra II 8.0 GB with important photos - carefully staged photos of butterfly specimens at the California Academy of Sciences. I worked 12 hours a day for 8 days on this project. The card behaved as it always has, and every single one of the 2400 photos I took, made it home safely.
Do back your cards up often, but from experience I can say that I have a very, very favorable impression of this card.

Customer Review: Be wary when you buy this card from BlueProton
Summary: 3 Stars

The card I ordered was a "SanDisk 8GB/15MB *Ultra II* CF Card" but what I got was actually just a standard Ultra. I was a but nervous when I purchased from this company because some of the past reviews claimed to have received a lesser version of what they ordered. Though it should be noted that even though the card I ordered was Ultra II, the description says 15MB/s, and the packaging of the Ultra that I received says 30MB/s. So maybe the listing is just old and SanDisk has just updated the Ultra models to have faster speeds. I'm have a feeling I'm not going to be disappointed when I use this card because I don't do any burst shooting, so the speed of the card wasn't really a factor when purchasing. Just be cautious that you may not get what you ordered.

Also, counterfeit SanDisk cards are quite common, and a few reviews have expressed concern that their cards are knockoffs. After looking into what the signs of a SanDisk knockoffs are, I noticed that the card I received looked genuine. I'm confident this is a retail SanDisk card and not a rebranded knockoff. Also the formatted size is 7.6GB for those that care.

Customer Review: A bargain! A must for the digital photographer!
Summary: 5 Stars

This 8GB CF card will allow me to take over 400 RAW photos or over a thousand FINE JPEGs with my Nikon D200. One or two of these is quite obviously enough even for a vacation, largely negating the need to bring a laptop computer along to recycle CF cards during all but the longest or most photo-intensive vacation. For a one-day shoot one of these is all I ever need, although I intend to carry two just for "what-ifs." The speed on this card is adequate for all of my needs, generally allowing continuous shots without much buffer delay.

I have had uniformly perfect luck with SanDisk Ultra CF cards over the years (and their SD cards too!). Never one failure. These cards are well-engineered and a bargain to boot. We have definitely come a long way since the 256/512MB days of only several years ago. What's not to like? Highly recommended. RJB.
