Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk 2 GB Cruzer Titanium ( SDCZ7-2048-A10, Retail Package)

Customer Review: Almost perfect
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this drive because of U3. I wish it was better designed, but its exactly what I need. It has many apps that I regularly use (firefox, skype, openoffice, trillian), and all work brilliantly. My boss at work blocked internet access from IE (that hindered me a lot) So this has been a god send (especially since I am in charge and needed to send emails and such from MY email). I use programs on several computers, most programs aren't that large. With everything I still have a gig left (documents and everything included. I'd still like to get a larger flash drive without U3 in the future, but only because I'd like to dedicate this one to work and keep only documents and necessary programs. Well that does it for the software review...

Now I'm not clumsy or by any means rough with my hardware, but... I mean come on, flash drives are in constant use and really it gets beat up. So the titanium you can tell is instantly stronger if you've ever held a plain flash drive before. It hasn't taken much, but I doubt it'll ever go past the pressure threshold they advertised, or even close, less I decide to test it and run it over with a car. Which may actually be fun (my friend did that with his and it STILL works). The only thing I did was take out the cruser icon that popped up. Everything else is as perfect as can be. If you give a negative review based on U3 I suggest you research what you buy first so you know what you are paying for. Those people really have no right to complain, it says in the product description what it is. Don't buy it if U3 isn't what you want.

Customer Review: WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE ON EARTH
Summary: 1 Stars

I have an older SanDisk Flash memory that works fine, and was looking forward to faster transfer rates on a new one. I was suprrised, however, to find that the new device was slower than the older one. The back of the Sandisk package advertises transfer rates of 9 Mb/sec. But when I plugged the new device into my 1-week-old Imac, I was surprised to find that the actual transfer rate was 1 Mb/sec. I would have expected problems on an older computer or older software, but not with a brand-new machine running the latest software available. Suspecting some sort of compatibility problem, I called SanDisk's customer service number. After spending minutes giving their representative personal information such as my name and email, I described my problem. His only answer was "the transfer rate is not guaranteed." When I asked him if he was located in India, he hung up on me (LOL). So I called SanDisk corporate headquarters, but was told everyone was out to lunch (I am not making this up.) Eventually, I figured out myself that there was a compatibility problem. The flash drive came configured for Windows. Using the Apple Disk Utility application, I reconfigured it in 15 seconds and hence obtained transfer rates of 6 Mb/sec. I told the SanDisk customer service person I had a brand new Imac. This is not exactly an obscure machine. But he had no idea of how to advise me. So, the product may be ok, but SanDisk's customer service is non-existent.

Customer Review: I'm impressed so far...
Summary: 5 Stars

But only time will tell. I purchased the SanDisck 2 GB Cruzer Titanium about two months ago and immediately put it to use. It seems very capable of transferring both small and large files very quickly. And yes, it's very stylish and feels durable--although I haven't had the nerve to test its durability by dropping it or driving over it with my car.

The software it comes with (U3 Launchpad) is a little overkill for my taste but I appreciate the bundled password protection utility. (I would have opted for the much more secure Kingston Data Traveler Elite which has hardware-based file protection but it was pricier.)

Lastly, it's nice to see that SanDisk included a steel ring with which to secure the drive to your key ring. I've seen others that came with string or would even situate the tether ring on the removable, and losable, end cap (ugh!). The SanDisk Cruzer's drive itself is retractable so there is no cap. But this also means that if you spill your Frappucino next to your keys then you had better act quickly and cross your fingers since the male portion of the drive is, in essence, exposed--even if it is retracted.

I'm still one of those that thinks it's great that we're able to carry around two gigs of storage on our keys for $40.

Hope this helps.

Customer Review: Good flash drive, could be better
Summary: 3 Stars

It can be a great drive, depending on what your requirements are. I look for the following:
- All-in-one design, no cap to lose
- should fit on a keyring
- fast read/write
- simple design

This drive fits most of the options above, except the following:
- The slider wears out after a while and it's sometimes hard to plug the drive into the USB slot without the slider closing
- It's marketed as 'crush resistant' however, the weak link here is the loop that attaches it to a keyring. You may never break the drive, but the loop can easily open and the drive will fall off your keyring.

If the above 2 options don't matter to you and you really need U3 then this drive is fine.

If not, I've found the better option to be the 2GB Jumpdrive Swivel 360 Degree Cap with Sleek Stainless Steel Design. It has a simpler, more functional design with no slider and a sturdy loop for the keyring.

--- Update Jan 2010 ---
The Lexar JumpDrive Swivel series has been discontinued, I now recommend the newer Lexar JumpDrive TwistTurn series

Customer Review: Pleased.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a pretty awesome product. My old USB jump drive broke when I accidentally snapped the USB plug and body in half, but with the reclining function added, there's a lesser chance that that can happen again. On top of that, there's no hassle over putting a protective cap on the USB because it doesn't require one!

I chose the titanium cased Cruzer for obvious reasons; it's absolutely necessary that I protect all my data by all means. The only drawback to it that I can find is that it makes the device a tad heavier than most products of the same data capacity, but the comfort the titanium gives you defeats it.

The U3 program that runs automatically when you plug in the stick was annoying at first, but then I realized how useful it was and I agree that it's a must! Through U3 you can check the remaining capacity, change the language preference, check for software updates and set a password. Or if you want, you can uninstall it but I prefer it to be on.

Finally, I'm excited about the pricing. Considering I got my last USB drive, which was only 1G, for over 60 dollars at the time, I couldn't be happier. Whey the heck didn't they make it cheaper sooner!?
