Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk 1 GB MicroSD Card (SDSDQ-1024-A10M, US Retail Package)

Customer Review: Great enhancement to cell phone
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this memory chip for my new Alltel Motorola e815 in August 2006. It's remarkably small - about the size and thickness of a fingernail. I thought I would have to format the chip, but it "read" immediately on installation. I also feared it might protrude from the top of the phone, making it impossible to use the belt clip, but again, no prob. I mostly use it to record video when I go on business trips so I can take greetings from old friends (and their pets!) and travelogues back to show my wife. Of course, I had to go into the phone's menu to change the max length of videos to unlimited since it comes defaulting to 15 seconds.

When I get home, I Bluetooth the video files into my Mac and create a quick movie with subtitles and chapters with HD Movie, then burn it onto a DVD with iDisc to show her the show on our 40" TV. Remarkably, even though the video is pixelly and often blurs with too fast a pan, it's a lot of fun to watch, especially if I've soundtracked a travelogue with the Talking Heads "Take Me to the River" or something. For example, yesterday I had a free afternoon at the Valley of Fire outside Las Vegas, today back in North Carolina I cut a 10 minute DVD video out of about 20 clips and we were able to watch it this afternoon. One caution for those of you with Verizon - they force Motorola to disable the phone's Bluetooth so it only communicates with headphones unless you buy their Motorola Tools (unnecessay with Alltel's version, which is fully capable).

Customer Review: Holy Snickey! It's a Tiny but Huge (In Storage) - Formatted & With Adapter!
Summary: 5 Stars

From the photo of the item, it looks like a CompactFlash but in reality, it's smaller than most people's thumbnails ... do not take a deep breath around it :-)

What's nice is it comes with a "regular" (SD) sized adapter that will fit most readers. You just slide this transflash (aka MicroSD) card into the adapter and then slide it into your reader as if it's a "regular" SD card.

I have two Moto phones and the card is already formatted and ready to use without me doing anything else.

Do you need to buy a separate reader to format/re-format the card before using? I'm not sure why one of the other reviewers said he needed a reader. My phone can format/re-format the card without an external reader and I would think most cell phones can. You can double check your instructional manual but I'd be surprised if your phone could not.

As for mounting it on your computer desktop, on my Moto phones, all I have to do is switch the USB settings from Data/Fax to Memory card and my phone mounts on my desktop and I can drag files to and from it like it's another hard drive. I'm a Mac user so maybe this is a feature not offered on Windows machines ...

But the card is formatted for immediate use - at least with my Moto cell phones.

Another plus for getting a card is the Moto phones will only allow you to take high res photos with a large Memory card and of course, you can store more songs.

Customer Review: Small, fast and has a PC/Laptop compatible caddy
Summary: 5 Stars

This little "fingernail of a storage device" has worked beautifully in transferring files from my PC & laptop over to my phone.

Now my LG VX8300 is nice and loaded up with MP3s, games, videos, photos, and even a backup of my browser favorites and two databases i use for client contacts and billing. It's just incredible at how much space they can pack into such a small storage device.

What more can you ask for for under $50 bucks? It's amazingly quick at storing data from my PC and snapping pictures with my phone (I haven't performed any comprehensive speed tests but I've transferred hundreds of megs from the PC in under a few minutes).

It's also incredibly small... possibly TOO small... which COULD be a problem if you are using these things secondary to a mobile phone. Personally I wish they were just a tad larger... It's almost difficult to get a good pinch of a grip on it when getting it in and out of the phone and caddy. I can't tell you how many times it's dropped onto my desk and I've had to hunt around for it.

Anyhow aside from it being so small, I have no complaints and it hasn't failed on me yet.

Customer Review: Worked Out of the Box with My Phone and Camera
Summary: 5 Stars

The SanDisk 1GB MicroSD card combines a very useful amount of capacity with amazingly small size. At 1GB, it will hold hundreds of songs or high-quality pictures, all in a unit about the size of your pinky fingernail. I guess the next step in techological progress will be storing a terabyte on a speck of dust!

But the best part about it is that it worked right out of the box. Electronic storage should be something that we can take for granted - no formatting, no worries about compatibility with multiple devices, and this card delivers. I've used it with both my LG VX8300 phone and several different cameras with no hiccups at all.

Well, one small hiccup. . . It comes with an adapter that bumps it up to the size of a standard SD card. The description claims "universal" compatibility when using the adapter, but my three-year-old Viking IntelliFlash reader didn't know what to do with it. I called their tech support and they confirmed that not all readers will recognize the adapter even though it fits just fine. So you may be in for an upgrade of your card reader as well.

Overall, it's a great piece of storage at a very affordable price.

Customer Review: Slow and Steady Wins the Race
Summary: 4 Stars

The card works great. The SD adapter is a great touch, but probably necessary as I've never seen an actual MicroSD reader. The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars from me is that it's fairly slow. Most people shouldn't be concerned with the speed as these usually ends up in phones or MP3 players. However, the speed does make a difference on my GPS. I know that SanDisk sells a faster Ultra II for more money, but my Kingston 1GB MicroSD (Japanese version, not Taiwanese) is already significantly faster than this basic model and a bit cheaper. Plus the Kingston has a lifetime warranty, although at 5 years the SanDisk warranty covers the usable lifespan of the card. (SanDisk Ultra products have a lifetime warranty). I've heard the A-Data is very zippy, but they are still a little too unproven in my book.

This card is a slow but steady performer with unbeatable compatibility (everyone tests their products with SanDisk) and it comes from a solid company. Unless you need a speedy card, it's a great product.
