Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Digital Concepts TR-60N Camera Tripod with Carrying CaseCustomer Review: Low cost, light weight, light duty. Summary: 3 Stars
Not a bad little tripod for $9.00 plus shipping, but don't plan to use it for professional photography results, or to hold a camera much heavier than a point-and-shoot (based on my Canon A720is on this tripod), or a lightweight SLR such as the Canon XSi. It is light weight and relatively small, so it will make a decent travel tripod, and I plan to use it on my local bicycle trips for some nature photos.
The pan and tilt functions are plastic and have some 'sticktion', so I disassembled the tripod and applied a little grease, but it still sticks a little and has some backlash. Because the panhead sticks, using this tripod is a two-handed affair; one hand to move the head, the other to hold the tripod to the ground so the whole thing doesn't move. At the tallest length the tripod is still shorter than my eye level, so I am always squatting or bending to use this tripod, unless my camera is aimed downward. That gets old pretty quick.
The case is unpadded but reasonably well made, the shoulder strap is a little tight for a somewhat large male (me), but it will still work OK. As an aside, the case straps perfectly to the top of my bicycle handlebars to make transporting easy, and an added bonus is I can replace the tripod from the case with my take-down fishing rod and pedal a couple blocks to the nearest fishing hole!
When I first set it up, one of the bottom legs pulled completely out, with its clamp attached. I didn't want the inconvenience of sending it back, so, after 15 minutes of frustration I finally got the clamp and leg re-attached to the upper leg. I haven't had a problem since then.
The quick release shoe must be removed from the head to attach/detach the camera, and I haven't been able to find a second quick release shoe listed anywhere to fit this tripod, which defeats the purpose of being able to quickly switch between 2 or more cameras using the quick release shoes; and if that one quick release shoe gets lost the tripod is useless. The bubble level near the shoe is just a broken, empty yellow tube.
Still, this tripod should serve its purpose well, as long as it is not banged too hard against something, or put to extreme use. So, if you want to dabble a little in nature photography or need some support for macro shots or portraits with a small camera, this tripod should fill the bill for a year or so, if you take care of it; but if you do much photography you will feel the need to replace it sooner. If the price goes much above 9 or 10 dollars, forget it, pay a little more for a better tripod, it will be worth it. I am thinking of upgrading my camera, when I do I will have to get a better tripod.
UPDATE: I have just purchased a Canon 40D camera and 70-300mm zoom lens. I feel insecure mounting the heavy camera/lens combination on this tripod. When the heavy camera/lens is mounted to the tripod, it feels wobbly and I must take extra care to tighten the panhead knobs well so the panhead won't flop over with the extra weight of my camera and lens. Also, I find the limited maximum height to be a severe hindurance when shooting toward the sky, and for many macro shots. So, I have ordered the Slik pro700 tripod which is much better built and extends to 74", taller than me! Still, this cheap, lightweight tripod has its place in my photo equipment lineup.
