Customer Review: StarTech/ SATA Version: A Critical Review
Summary: 5 Stars

Just before the new year I upgraded my harddrive from the standard MacBook Pro version of 80GB/ 5400 to 160GB/ 7200 rpm drive. So, now I've been sitting on Apple-issued harddrive for 3 months now.

I bought the enclosure case after a friend told me I could use it as a spare harddrive. I made a mistake and bought the "2.5" IDE"- which is for the older versions of Mac and PC laptops. When I finally received this StarTech 2.5" SATA-- it was approximately 45 seconds from the moment I snapped in the harddrive to the enclosure case cover and tighten those two (2) minuscule screws.

Works perfectly.

Just a reminder-- make sure you know the kind of harddrive you have and purchase with confidence. The product works well.

Customer Review: Perfect PS3 hard drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm pretty happy with the product. I also used this enclosure for my 80 GB PS3 hard drive when I did a hard drive upgrade on my PS3. It worked perfectly. Also, I have nothing but Macs in my house and was initially frustrated that my Macs couldn't recognize it as an external hard drive. I then figured out that I had to format my hard drive and once I did that it worked. I've only had this enclosure for about 1 1/2 weeks and so far no issues. I've stored mp3s and pdfs with no problems. It runs fairly quietly and stays pretty cool while running.

As mentioned by others, the screws are a bit small but the little screw driver that comes with it has a magnetic tip so, I had no problems putting it together.

Customer Review: Good way to convert unused drive...
Summary: 5 Stars

I used this enclosure for the 120GB drive I replaced in a PS3 slim after upgrading it to use a 500GB drive. (I also used the 500GB drive in the enclosure for the initial backup of the PS3 before doing the drive upgrade) Worked fine. I was a little concerned about the cable having connectors to feed it power from 2 USB ports but it seemed to work fine with just one on both of the 5400rpm drives I tried it with... (Maybe the 7200 rpm drives require more power?)
Be aware that the PS3 appears to use an unrecognized format for the hard drives. (For backing up the PS3 expects to use FAT32) So you will need to reformat drive(s) when converting between use as an external and use in the PS3.

Customer Review: Great enclosure! A couple things to note.
Summary: 5 Stars

Got this enclosure today to put my old 60G MacBook HD to use and it's a great enclosure. A couple things to note: First, ANY 2.5" SATA drive WILL fit in this enclosure. Those reviewers complaining that the enclosure is too small have not removed the extra metal plate covering the back of the HD, generally attached with a small screw at each corner. Once this plate is removed, the drive fits securely in the enclosure. Second, I was a little concerned about this enclosure requiring two USB ports to function. However, I'm happy to report that both on my MacBook and my iMac G5, the drive functions just fine using only one USB port. Hope this information helps!

Customer Review: Beware of drive size limitation, 160GB Max
Summary: 3 Stars

I initially used this device as a means of cloning my old drive onto a newer drive in my laptop. It worked great. The old drive was a 160GB, and the new drive in the laptop was a 320GB.

I've since tried doing the opposite since I was going to try and install Windows 7 on the old drive and then swap the images again. NO GO! The Enclosure will not support the larger drive.

In referencing Startech's website and the product manual it actually indicates Hard Drive support of 120GB, however as I mentioned above it does supports 160GB.

Bottom line I wish the drive limitation was more clear in the Amazon specs.
