Customer Review: Good product
Summary: 4 Stars

This drive enclosure is one of the higher quality cases I have purchased. From what I can tell, it appears to be made from solid aluminum, with the front and back in plastic. Installation, and setup was easy, there were no extra drivers or software to install just plug-n-play.
A few things I dislike about the unit are; there is no fan. This is not a big deal unless you are going to access the drive repeatedly for a several hours. When the hard drive itself is being accessed there is a lot of heat the builds up, but when you just have it plugged in idling there is no problem. The USB cable provided for data transfer has two Male plugs, which I suspect is for users with computers without USB 2.0. I had no problem using a regular USB cable I had laying around instead of the provided one, so this is not an issue for 90% of computers out there. My final issue, is the directions or somewhat vague, there is very little support provided in the booklet. A reminder for anyone not tech-savvy, the hard drive you are using with this device must be formatted. If you purchased a brand new hard drive, or intent to use a new one you need to format it. I work with computers a lot and it slipped my mind at first (it is also not mentioned in the instructions).
Overall, I would definitely recommend this to anyone. Can't beat Amazon's prices.

Customer Review: "Cheap Rescue Case"
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first got this guy I thought it wasn't compatible with my drive.. Till I removed the casing, four screws on the side off my Drive, and took the connector off the front. I then connected it to the black piece of this drive and it fits together perfectly! And It holds very well. I read a bunch of reviews on here complaining about their drive moving around after they put it together but i can't feel or hear any kind of movement. That being said, I am being VERY delicate with it and it is definitely nowhere near as durable as a Western Digital Pocket Drive. A Lot of people complained about the screws, mine fit in there perfectly and yeah they are microscopic but as long as you're putting it together on a table (which you should be to be safe) then you aren't gna lose them.

If you NEED to get your files off of your SATA drive this is the best thing for you. Once I get my files off I plan on reformatting this drive and using it with my PS3 so it can be in one spot and won't be moved often (just to be on the safe side).

My HP laptop's motherboard died last week and i've tried a number of ways to salvage my hard drive and this is def the cheapest and easiest way to do that. Five Stars for saving my a ton of money that i woulda spent taking it to best buy or something like that.

Customer Review: Works, but breaks easily
Summary: 2 Stars

If I'd reviewed this product after its first use, I probably would have given it five stars. But after owning it for a week, it's completely unusable.

I used it for the original drive from my 13" MacBook. Installation was a snap, although, as other reviewers have mentioned, the tiny screws were tedious. Then I plugged the USB cable into my computer, and, voila! everything was there.

Then I put it in my bag and took it to work, planning to transfer several gigs of data needed for an upcoming project. Used it once, no problem, wonderful. Alas, the second time I plugged it in, the computer didn't recognize its existence. After some examination, I realized that the connector on the enclosure itself was very loose, and I couldn't remove the cable from it. Took it apart, saw that the four very tiny contact points from the USB port to the little board that snaps into the hard drive had *all* disconnected. Yes, it had lived in my bag for a few days, but all my other electronics withstand that abuse with no problem.

I've enlisted two soldering-iron-happy friends to attempt a fix, but they are not optimistic about the outcome because the contacts are so tiny. I imagine I'll be ordering a new enclosure -- not this one -- in the near future.

Customer Review: works fine with 320 and 500 gb Drives
Summary: 5 Stars

I own 5 Startech enclosures and will buy two more. I have both the SATA and IDE enclosures(had to buy the IDE direct from Startech). In my SATA enclosures I have used, drives of various sizes, including 320gb and 500gb drives. The startech enclosures are replacing all my other 2.5 inch drive enclosures. The Startech work fine with my Windows ME, XP, Vista and W7 computers.

I have four laptops and create "clone drives" for each so if a HD crashes, I can simply slip a clone drive into the system rather than having to go through the headaches of reformatting and reinstalling. The Startech enclosures are perfect for my clone drives. I also have other external drives where I keep disk images (e.g., WD Passport 500gb).

I do not like the tiny screws that come with the Startech enclosure. I lost them for my first Startech enclosure. You cannot get replacements at your local hardware store. I was able to use scotch tape to securely close the enclosure. When I bought my second enclosure, an extra screw was included.

If you are in need of an enclosure for upgrading, cloning, or disk imaging, I highly recommend you consider the Startech. It works for me.

Customer Review: Overall I'm very pleased with this device.
Summary: 5 Stars

After 4 years my son's laptop finally died. He is currently in his 4th year at college. So you can imagine how much work was on that laptop. We decided to purchase a new laptop and thought it would be a breeze to reload all his school work because we subscribed to an on line backup service. When it came to reloading the data from this service, it was not available because we had unknowingly let the subscription lapse. So on to plan "B". I knew that the HDD was still operating, so I did some research on accessing the old HHD and settled on this HDD enclosure. I was worried that I might mess something up because this is an area that I have no experience in. With in 10 minutes after it arrived, I had the old HDD removed and installed in the enclosure, less than a 1/2 hour later all my son's school data, music, pictures and video was safely transferred to the new laptop. Over 24 GB of data saved. The cost of this device = $25 ($14 + $11 S&H) vs. the cost of taking it to a professional = $65\fisrt 9GB of data and $15\ 9GB there after. This device is a piece of cake operate and is the way to go. I left the old HDD in the enclosure and I'm planning to utilize it as a backup device.
