The Sonnet FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter (FAD 824) worked exactly as advertised. There was no installing adapter software drivers or any other extraneous processes. You just take the adapter out of the shipping packaging, plug your FireWire (FW) 400 terminated cable into one side of the adapter, and then plug the adapter into the FireWire 800 terminal on your computer, and then use the external device (in my case, a Maxtor One Step II external hard disk drive) with your (in my case, 2009 Apple iMac w/2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, using Mac OS X, Leopard, v.10.5.7) home computer as normal. I was able to retrieve information which I had backed up on the external hard drive without difficulty or incident through the existing (FW 400) cable plugged into the adapter, which in turn was plugged into the FW 800 terminal on my Apple iMac computer.
I would recommend the Sonnet FW 400 to 800 Adapter to anyone who is seeking a simple, relatively inexpensive, straight forward interface between their existing FW 400 equipped external devices and cabling, and their newer home computer equipped only with FW 800 terminal hardware. Nothing could be simpler than the use of this adapter hardware. I am definitely a satisfied customer.
