Customer Review: Peace of mind with no disruption at an affordable price
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a fantastic product. Got one at one of the office stores today as a Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) special for under three figures, but even at the Amazon price this is a great deal. Love the simple packaging with clever phrases - very Apple-esque. I have a 20" iMac so I wanted to get a FireWire drive to save my USB ports, but this was such a good deal, I couldn't pass it up. The USB 2.0 is fast and the drive required practically no setup - just plugged it in, had to reformat once with Disk Utility to get it Mac-ready and I was done. Using it with Time Machine in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is a breeze - a couple of clicks and I have an effortless backup of my system - peace of mind with absolutely no disruption. Every hour if I'm working in my office I'll hear a slight whirring of the drive spinning up and some files being backed up from Time Machine, but it hardly makes more noise than the iMac itself, and far less than any PC or laptop I've ever used. The compact size, small footprint and smooth design make it all the better buy. It even comes with a 5 year limited warranty - enough said! You won't regret your purchase.

Customer Review: Adding to the Chorus of BEWARE!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

Today is April 3 2009. I bought my Seagate 500G drive in late August 2008. I've had it less than a year and about two weeks ago it stopped functioning in the same ways that other reviews have mentioned: my computer wouldn't recongize the Seagate letter drive on my laptop or anyone's computer!

I wish I had read the reviews more carefully - I read a few that mentioned this happening and thought, "Well, it probably won't happen to me." WRONG! Fortunately I have almost all my files backed up on a 2nd external (Passport Hard Drive). I'm going to ask for a refund.

I'd recommending doing a little research on Consumer Reports about external hard drives - there are so many of them out there and I thought Seagate was a respected and well-known name. Maybe it is, but his, this first external drive, has been a tremendous disappointment.

BUYER BEWARE - do NOT, I repeat DO NOT buy this drive even if it can hold 500 gigs. That also swayed me becuase I thought, "Wow, I store my enormous music collection on this and still have lots of room." WRONG!

Do your research is what I recommend.

Customer Review: Quiet + 5 Year Warranty + Easy Installation = Perfect Hard Drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I like the hard drive for a few reasons:

1. It won't tip over easily.
2. Looks Great, just like how the picture shows. Also, the side lights on the hard drive look very stylish, especially when lit up at night.
3. I had mine on for over 2 days straight and it is only slightly warm if anything. The fan on the base seems to cool it well.
4. 5 year warranty, many other drives only come with a 1 year warranty.
5. Installation is 4 steps; and it was easy to do.
6. Comes with a drive manager program which is easy to use to backup files or whatever.
7. Great price for 500 GB.
8. Transfer Rate is fast.
9. Very Very Quiet.

Disadvantages:

1. Says 500 GB, but reality you only get 465 GB because the rest of the memory I believe is used for transfering.
2. Can find lighter hard drives.

Overall: The hard drive is worth it because it is a great deal for 500 GB from a good company with a 5 year warranty. I highly recommend it, although you may want to consider this same model but with FireWire for a few more dollars.

Customer Review: Great storage, added backup protection
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this external hard drive to back up my husband's bird photos; considered it a more cost-effective method to online storage.

The unit, while plastic, was well packed and quickly shipped. Despite some critical reviews, I am pleased with the product. Installation was automatic on a Windows machine running XP Pro and took less than five minutes to install and customize the backups.

The Seagate Free Agent lets you retrieve files easily and settings can be adjusted for any type of automatic backup with the files and folders you choose to back up.

The 500GB storage size is perfect for most computers (Note: only 465GB actually available).

The slim vertical profile takes up no more space than a stapler.

The drive comes with a power cord, USB cable and installation instructions for both Windows and Mac. The User manual is pre-installed.

Installation and initial operation went flawlessly; I will be back with an update aftern further use, however, right now, I like it a lot.

Customer Review: Solid workhorse for my home needs
Summary: 5 Stars

I've got a pair of these sitting on my desk (with a 1 TB model to back them up). Seeing as my C: drive is only 160GB, just one of these drives serves as a backup of all my important documents and files, plus holds a TON of music, pictures and video.

And because these are so affordable, it's well within reason to have a second one at its side backing up the first.

That's just what I've done and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. These drives are super easy to set up - if you can plug a digital camera into your computer you can set one of these up - operate fast and are nice and quiet. No muss, no fuss, and without bundles of unnecessary bloatware to clog up your system. Just a good, solid hard drive.

Oh, and they're darn spiffy looking, too.

I own THREE of these models and they've all chugged along without a kink. Mine see use for data storage, backups, to serve media to my Xbox 360, and to transport large amounts of data between computers.

Solid stuff. Recommended.
