Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sabrent USB 2.0 TV Tuner/Video Capture Box with Remote Control - TV-USB20Customer Review: This thing is the worst Summary: 1 Stars
Don't let price fool you. This thing isn't worth even five dollars.
I bought this piece of vomit just to give it a try and because the price seemed so good. I thought the price would mean it was the basic of the basic, but I was very wrong.
Starting off, the box is very misleading. it says you need a free PCI slot inside your computer, when this is not a PCI device, but a USB device. The box also states that it comes with a remote control, the unit itself, the drivers, and instruction manual. There was no instruction manual, and the remote buttons were all wrong. For example, you could hit the "Channel Up" button and it would respond as "Mute" or I could hit "Volume up" and it would respond to one of the number buttons. The remote buttons are all wrong!
So I plug the USB device into the computer I wish to use it with. And blue screen of death, right away. I'm dead serious. I plug it in and it blue screen's the computer right off the bat. I restart that computer and I try it on a different computer. I use the manual way to install the drivers for the device, and it needs a file named "Tridvid.sys" I select the file from the WIndows XP driver file in the CD and IT BLUE SCREEN'S THE COMPUTER AGAIN! WHAT THE HECK!
No matter how many times I try and install the driver, it blue screen's the computer. So I try one of the Windows Vista drivers, and it works fine.
The software they give you is InterVideo WinDVR 3. The software isn't all bad, but I would like more features out of it. With the Windows Vista drivers and WinDVR, you CANNOT select an audio capture source other than the horrible audio capture device that is included with the capture device. And it does give you an audio capture input, and it's awful. The audio device leaves an ominous popping noise in the background, like it's static. Horrible! And you can't select a different audio capture input! I would like to use my computer's input source, but I can't.
The unit has three methods for video input; Coax, composite, and S-Video. The Coax input doesn't work very well, it leaves an ominous high pitch ringing noise in the background. A sound frequency that you cannot hear when you reach a certain age, but I can still hear it. S-Video seems to work fine, great. The composite video input is poor. Video flashes black and flickers.
All in all, this is horrible. You may notice that most video capture devices are very expensive(about 60-80 dollars.) But trust me, it is a good idea to put your hard earned money into one of those expensive capture devices. They will offer much better performance and will in most cases have a digital TV tuner in them. So you can get free HD over the air programming.
Do not buy this though!
