Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sabrent SBT-UPPC USB to Parallel 6-Foot Printer Cable

Customer Review: Poor quality, non-functional
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this cable thinking all cables were created equal, and why shell out $40 for a brand-name version, when I could buy this one for a mere $9? Well, I've learned my lesson! The cable arrived in new packaging, but when opened I found the plastic sheathing over the cable proper had melted so that it stuck to itself and the twist ties were embedded into the cable surface. A little wrestling freed the cable but when plugged into my Brother HL8020 and connected to my Vista Home Premium PC, I repeatedly got "USB Device not recognized" error messages. Clearly the issue was not with drivers (I tried both the native Vista driver and two provided by Brother), but with the cable itself. $$$$ and one high-quality Belkin cable later, my printer 'plug-n-played' on the first try. So - learn from my mistake: you get what you pay for, and with this cable, that means not much more than headaches and wasted time!

Customer Review: Defective cable, but some technical support
Summary: 2 Stars

After following the installation instructions on three different computers, I was unable to complete a print job to an HP laserjet 5mp from Win2k, WinXP or Mac Leopard. The device and printer were installed correctly as far as the computers were concerned, but print jobs would disappear from the print queue immediately without printing. Sabrent tech support did respond to my e-mails but after two days of troubleshooting possible installation problems I simply purchased a replacement cable from another manufacturer USB Parallel Converter Cable DX-UBPC.

Note that regardless of cable manufacturer, you have to follow the instructions carefully to first initiate USB printer support in your operating system before trying to install the printer itself.

Customer Review: Not as advertised
Summary: 1 Stars

The Sabrent SBT-UPPC USB to Parallel 6-Foot Printer Cable touts itself as supporting Macs. However it doesn't do so natively, (no plug it in and it just works) The drivers comes on a half size cd that cannot be playing on iMacs, Mac mini's or Mac Powerbooks. The downloaded drivers are flaky under Tiger and totally unusable under Leopard (If you can get them to intall at all). It also cannot be used on a print server or the Apple Extreme Router, neither device recognizes it as a printer and with no way to load drivers it is useless.

It did work on an ancient Window XP machine I had stuffed under the desk but only after downloading and installing drivers. (No plug and play) But if I have to use my old windows box, it would make more sense to just use the parallel port instead of this converter.

All in all I found it useless.

Customer Review: Work fine with HP5P Laser Printer..
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this cable to use with my old HP 5P printer after my old desktop conked out. All of my laptops have no parallel port, and this seemed the quickest and cheapest solution for me. I picked this cable bacause of its silver shielding, it looks flexible.

Got the cable, plug it in and wait about a minute for Vista to load the driver. Then the printer appeared in the printer list and that was it. Painless. Really worked, despite of a couple of bad reviews that gave me pause.

The only bad thing is there is no manual that comes with the cable and nowhere, enven manufactor's website, that I can find if my printer is compatible. So if you have a HP 5P LaserJet and need this cable, go for it. It worked for me. There is a driver cd that was included in the box, but I don't need it. Guess if I run Windows 98 then I will.

Customer Review: UPDATE - Doesn't work so great on iMac and HP4200
Summary: 2 Stars

Well, after having used this for about a month now, it's not such a great cable. Yes, it connected easily, but any time there is a graphics-heavy job, or even just some text to print that's more than 2 or 3 pages long, the job somehow gets 'stuck' in the cable; it doesn't seem to have enough memory to send the job to the printer. Then it totally jams up the printer and it's impossible to clear the print queue without disconnecting the cable for about 5 minutes and rebooting the printer. It was cheap, but this was a waste of money. You get what you pay for....

<Just purchased new iMac - no parallel port for my HP Laserjet 4200, so I thought I'd try this cable, even though some of the reviews were not so favorable. Just plugged it in and it recognized my printer instantly and worked perfectly. Amazing buy for $12!>
