Customer Review: good cable that works

Sabrent SBT-UPPC USB to Parallel 6-Foot Printer Cable

This cable works just fine. I have a Dell laptop and a Dell printer. The Dell printer uses up ink cartridges quickly and the cartridges are expensive. Therefore, I wanted to hook up an additional printer to my laptop to use when the quality was not important. I have a very old Canon BJ200e printer and I can refill the ink cartridge myself (which can't be done with the new Dell printer). Windows XP found the print drive for my old printer immediately, so I did not have to use the CD that came with the cable. The only problem I had was with Windows Add Printer Wizard. When it asks you to designate a port, remember that it is a "virtual port". Each time you add a printer port and fail, another virtual port will be created. You need to remember to designate THE VERY LAST (most recently added) virtual port on your list of ports in the wizard. Then all will be smooth. It does not appear that the cable slows anything down while printing.

Summary: 5 Stars

I used it to connect an old Canon BJ-200E printer to a new Dell desktop. Win XP did indeed recognize and install the printer as soon as I plugged it in - no additional drivers were necessary - but I still needed to run the "Add Printer" wizard to get it to appear on my printer list. Then I went into the printer properties and switched from the standard printer port to USB. That was it. **Note that the manufacturer specifies WIN 98SE/2000/XP and Mac OS v8.6-9.2.

Customer Review: NEVER buy this. Junk in a box.
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this because a few of the reviews said it "worked out of the box". I'm on XP. It simply does NOT work at all. The packaging says a 6' cable; it's around 4'. It says Windows XP compatible -- not even close. If they meant to say that with their cable you will receive "unknown device" messages from the USB controller then it sure is compatible. The packaging says "Fully compatible with all parallel printers". I have a Lexmark 3200 Parallel printer; it doesn't work.

Read ALL the reviews and you will see what I mean. I wish I had read them all! The drivers are for Pre-XP systems. The documentation is in broken English and is lame. I will never purchase anything from Sabrent because of their obvious false advertising on this product.

I wish I could find a "Contact Us" for Amazon and ask them why they are selling a falsely marked product but alas, I could not find such a link. I thought about returning this purchase but the shipping costs Amazon would charge me would be about the same as the cost of this "printer cable".

Customer Review: Worked for me! Connected HP Laserjet 4L to Macbook Pro!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Great seller! Low price, fast ship and well packaged.

I was about to donate my beloved HP Laserjet 4L when I came across this cable while browsing on Amazon. I was tired of paying the high replacement prices for inkjet cartridges. I wanted a cable to connect my new MacBook Pro.

I live in the SF Bay Area (Silicon Valley), and my technical friends and family told me this couldn't be easily done. (Note: I am a do-it-yourselfer, and logical thinker, but not an engineering type in anyway.)

For the price, I figured I'd give it a try. The cable looks whimpy compared to the HP cable. At first the serial side didn't fit, and I fiddled around with it. Eventually, I was able to connect the cable. I downloaded the printer drivers off of the HP website. Installed it. Rebooted the computer, and the Mac OS X immediately recognized the Laserjet. I ran a few test jobs, and it worked. Yeah!

Customer Review: USB is the way to be
Summary: 4 Stars

The Sabrent SBT-UPPC USB Parallel cable was very easy to install. Having a computer with Windows XP, the cable was immediately recognized, as was the HP Laserjet 5 I am using. It has made this printer usable again in a world where parallel is on it's way out. I did however have an issue with the printer. I leave my computer on at night, and at times it Automatically updates and restarts. If it does this (it has a few times now), I can no longer use the printer. What I learned to do was turn off and on the printer, then go to Start Menu\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services and restart the Print Spooler service. When I do this, everything works from that point forward. A small price to pay for being able to use the printer. I would score the cable as a 3 star if I knew this issue was completely the cable's fault and not somehow Windows XP's fault.

Overall, a very good accessory for legacy printers.
