Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sabrent SBT-EKU25 Ultra Slim USB 2.0 2.5-inch IDE/PATA Hard Drive Enclosure (Black)Customer Review: DO NOT BUY Summary: 1 Stars
I wish Amazon had negative ratings. I would give this drive enclosure a negative eleventy billion. I have had dozens of drive enclosures over the years. I've NEVER had this kind of experience, not even when USB was a new technology.
First of all, the Sabrent SBT-EKU25 is quite old tech. Not one mention of XP or Vista in the documentation, what little there is of it. I imagine that it has been sitting for five to seven years on a shelf somewhere...or more likely the manufacturer doesn't care about updating anything. And that includes the chipsets, firmware and/or electrical components.
Secondly, it crashed each and every computer into which I plugged it. Every one. Blue screened them right out of there, every time. One is an old desktop with buggy video drivers that crash all the time, so I didn't think anything of it, but the other two machines are brand new, smoothly-running fresh laptops that haven't been owned long enough to make them buggy! Neither of them has ever blue-screened on me, and yet the instand I plug in this drive, crash-o-rama.
Third, and not the least, it seems to have fried the very 2.5" laptop drive I was intending to re-use. The drive is totally unresponsive when put back in the computer I got it out of, and it's totally non-responsive in an old Firewire enclosure I have. By the way I purchased this Sabrent SBT-EKU25 with the intent of replacing the old Firewire enclosure. I guess that's off the table now.
Lastly, and I suppose this is a minor complaint, but the cable is wacky. It's a regular USB plug on the drive end (USB A) and a double, y-split USB A on the other end. What on earth is the second plug for? You can't mount it at the same time on two computers. You can't use the second plug as a pass-through. That would require an A-type receptacle. It's utterly useless. You;d expect a cable with mini-USB on the drive end and an A type on the other, or at the very least a B-type on the drive end and an A-type on the other. Instead this cable looks like it was designed by monkeys.
I don't mean to go on and on about the cable but because of the choice they made -and it's a really odd choice - you are stuck using it.
The long and short of it is: DO NOT BUY THIS DEVICE. It is poorly made and could in fact damage whatever hard drive you put in it...not to mention what it could do to your computer. Spend a few extra dollars and get a name brand you can trust. This is purely and simply a piece of garbage and not worth the money to return it, even. I plan to stomp on it, then dump it in the trash and never think about it again.
A much better choice is the Vantec NexStar3 series Vantec NexStar 3 NST-260U2-BK - Storage enclosure - IDE - Hi-Speed USB - onyx black. Slightly more money, especially since you can't use Prime shipping (if you have that) but very, very reliable.
