Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sabrent SATA-C35U Serial ATA to USB 2.0 Cable Converter Adapter with Power SupplyCustomer Review: Handly little gizmo Summary: 5 Stars
Great for when you need to mount a SATA hard drive in a hurry without bothering with an external enclosure. (Mind you not many external enclosures support SATA internally anyway.)
I bought this converter because bad RAM crashed my PC and corrupted WinXP. Since I had to re-install Windows I upgraded my primary SATA hard drive, but I forgot to pull some important files from the old one. Enter this SATA-to-USB adapter. I just plugged in my old drive, it mounted like any other enclosure, and within in minutes I had copied my files.
Note that this device comes with a power brick that has a SATA power connector (not pictured). What's a bit odd is that the power supply has no power switch -- you just plug in your drive to power it up, and unplug the cord to power it down. This is not a problem, of course, but a switch might have been a practical addition.
The actual USB 2.0 performance seems good. I didn't benchmark it, but I had no trouble moving large 1-2GB files, which shouldn't be a problem with any USB 2.0 interface in principle, but I've had USB 2.0 enclosures that choke with big files or flake out from time to time. But not this one, apparently.
And excellent little gizmo.
Customer Review: Simple, Small & Easy to Use Summary: 4 Stars
This SATA converter operated perfectly and immediately upon connection to my catastrophically corrupted HD. I used it effectively in conjunction with data recovery software to salvage ten years worth of personal data. I have finally learned my lesson about creating data back-ups, and thanks to this simple and useful device, it was not too late.
Do not hesitate to use this product for recovery or file transfer operations. However, due to the nature of this product, you will have wires strewn about during use, so it not ideal if you are looking for something to use regularly for external data storage. In any event, it was clearly designed for the former use and not the latter.
As others have noted, it requires an outlet for power, rather than drawing it directly over the USB connection. Please do not plan to use as mobile connection for your external storage.
Hope this was helpful.
Customer Review: Great product and reasonably priced Summary: 5 Stars
The SATA hard drive in my HP desktop stopped booting up...I didn't think it was a hard drive "crash," because I know what hard drives sound like when it is a hardware failure. I'm not sure why Windows Vista stopped booting up, but when it did I could not access that hard drive. So I needed a way to retrieve the data. I could have taken the hard drive to the Geek Squad and paid over $150 for them to do it, but instead I ordered this device. Very straightforward. Within ten minutes after opening the package from Amazon, I had it connected to my old hard drive, plugged the other end (USB) into my wife's HP desktop, and was transferring files. Nothing to complain about with this product.
Customer Review: a bit mixed on performance Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this to transfer info out of my boyfriends laptop HD (the laptops motherboard was fried and I had hopes that the HD was fine).
On my computer the product worked like a charm.
I got the information no problem. My boyfriends computer was a different story. We couldn't get it to recognize the machinery at all. we both run XP and his computer is brand new and mine is quite old so I cannot fathom why it wouldn't load.
the instructions are pretty useless, they are in engrish, so I hope you are good with plug and play items if you buy this. Also no hope for a driver for XP.
so its a roll of the dice with this item
Customer Review: Great Product! Summary: 5 Stars
I am an average home pc user who had a motherboard and power supply failure. The HD was working fine so I needed a quick fix to pull my data off the old disc and onto another machine.
This product did exactly what it was supposed to do, was easy to connect/setup etc. and (in my mind) is great value.
It has LEDs that give an indication of activity level and an external power supply.
If I were to make one very minor negative observation, it would be that the cables are all a little bit too short, another 6 inches would be ideal but as they were it was not a big issue at all.
