Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Rebit Backup Software for Multiple PCs (6) RSCD350000MPOSCustomer Review: Auto Backup Not So Automatic After All Summary: 1 Stars
Bought this software about a year ago to backup 3 computers. I had a brand-new Western Digital external drive to use with it.
It has been erratic from day one and I've had to use tech support several times to try to make it work. The worst part is that all my efforts have been focused on making it back up; I've never tried to RESTORE anything with it. It worries me that if I ever had a computer failure of some type and tried to restore files, I might really find out how poor a backup system it is.
The initial installation didn't work and tech support had to walk me thru that process again. Then I couldn't "safely disconnect" it to use it on a different computer without shutting down the first computer. Their suggestion was to go to Start, Run, services.msc and manually shut down the 2 Rebit services that run. Two weeks ago I discovered it was giving me an error message that a Backup Restore Point had not been created for about 250 hours. It's supposed to automatically create a Restore Point every 24 hours. The solution was to totally wipe out my external backup drive, re-format it and re-install the software. After that, it created one Restore Point, but no further ones for 5 days. At other times in the past it has gotten stuck on trying to create a Restore Point and it just sits there with the message that it is creating one which "may take a few minutes". But 6 hours later, the same message is there and no Restore has been created!
For anyone comtemplating buying this software, I would HIGHLY recommend going to their site, then into their support area and onto their Forum. Read some of the posts there about problems people have had and the recommended solutions (or in many cases, there are no recommended solutions). For a backup system that is supposed to work in the background automatically and make copies of all of your files which can easily be restored, this software is EXTREMELY complicated.
While it looks like a really simple no-brain backup system for people who want it to work without having to be a Level 2 technician or programmer, it JUST ISN'T. Read the Forum, then decide if you understand what is being discussed and decide whether you have the necessary computer skills to be able to analyze and repair your system when (not if) it goes sideways on you.
Every computer is different with different programs that may conflict with other programs. Rebit is apparently susceptible to these variances. It may work fine on Joe's computer, but conflict with Mary's antivirus, and not be able to shut down on my computer because of encrypted files. There may be workarounds, but totally different for each of us. I might add that most of the problems have been with trying to get it to work on my main computer. That has taken up about 90% of my attention and I have only tried to back up computers # 2 and #3 once or twice. I can't really say how many additional problems may crop up with two additional different computers should I attempt regular backups with them.
Unless you are really comfortable with computers, have at least an intermediate-to-high skill level, and don't mind tweaking things, I would recommend you avoid Rebit. I'm going to Plan B (don't really know what that is at the moment)and putting this software into the trash before it causes something serious that can't be fixed!
