Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Razer Mamba Wireless Gaming Laser Mouse 5600 DPI

Customer Review: Beautiful Gaming Mouse with some minor fixable issues.
Summary: 4 Stars

What I wanted this mouse for:

I bought this mouse mainly because I wanted to have a good wireless keyboard and mouse set to play PC games with on my 40" LCD TV. Previously I had been using a Logitech G11 Wired Keyboard and Logitech MX518 Wired Mouse that were both hooked up to my PC while I was using it with my 22" Monitor but I wanted to upgrade from my 22" computer monitor to my 40" LCD TV so I needed something wireless. I paired this mouse up with a Logitech K350 Wireless keyboard which is the same keyboard used in the Logitech Desktop Wave Pro set but this mouse is supposed to be better then the wireless mouse the Logitech Wave set comes with.

Razer's claim & allure of this mouse:

Razer claims that this mouse is the best wireless gaming mouse with precision and accuracy to keep you ahead of the game. I had never used a Razer product before but took a chance on it since it seemed from the specs like the best wireless mouse for a gamer to buy, and since they said it has "7 buttons" that are configurable I figured I could have all the keys I needed to keep ahead of the game right in the palm of my hand.

Opening the Box:

Right when you open up the package it comes in a fancy plastic display box that is pretty hard to open and looks like the display box for a million dollar museum diamond you often see cat burglars trying to steal in movies. In the bottom of that box are all the manuals, the battery pack, and some stickers.

Step 1, The Driver installation Process:

Once your done assembling everything the manual recommends that you update the firmware on the mouse and dock by downloading the latest firmware drivers on their site. You could also choose to download the mouse drivers that will allow you to setup macros and designate ingame functions and profiles to the mouse. The installation of the firmware was pretty easy, it guides you step by step in the installation screen but it requires that you have a second mouse connected to the computer while configuring the razer mouse.

Step 2, Configuring the Mouse:

Once I finished updating the firmware on the Razer Mamba I noticed that the mouse pointer would only move to the left side of the screen with the Razer, it would refuse to move up, down, or right. Natually I was freaking out and thought that it was broken but after reading the manual and Razers site it said that you might need to re-sync your mouse with the dock after a firmware update. So I did just that by pressing and holding the botton on the dock until it flashed and then the wireless signal botton on the mouse and vualla, it worked!.

Step 2, (Configuration) Issues: Once it got around to working I noticed that it was acting a little jumpy, it would jump around even when I wasnt touching the mouse. So I goggled the problem that I was having in the hopes of finding a solution to my problem. Some users suggested taking out the batterys and putting them back in but I just turned the mouse off and back on because the batterys are really difficult to remove from the mouse. That didnt solve my problem however so I thought about trying the mouse without a mouse pad, that seems to have helped as it doesnt jump around by itself anymore but there are still other issues that I am not happy with that I will say as we continue the review.

Step 3, Testing it out in games: I played a couple of FPS games with this mouse like Battlefield 2, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. I was able to bind ingame functions to two of the 4 side buttons that come on the mouse but the two small buttons that are on the top (and really small so their hard to press) seem to be reserved for changing the mouse sensitivity even when your playing games unless you change them in the mouse software (not from inside the games). Trying to shoot guns with this mouse from up close to enemies is pretty strait forward and about the same as with my Logitech MX518 after I toned down the motion speed on the Razer (the pointer was flying across the screen too fast before). Shooting enemies with a sniper rifle however was a very different story, shooting with a sniper rifle in FPS games requires that you have a mouse that stays perfectly still when you have your targets very small head on your cross-hair so that you can get a clean and perfectly aligned shot. The Razer however moves around slightly by itself so it throws your aim off a bit if the mouse is used on some surfaces that the mouse laser has trouble with, not something a gamer would appreciate. I eventually fixed this issue by using a gaming grade solid mouse pad that came with my Coolermaster Stacker 830 Evolution case (I had it in a drawer and forgot I had it), Razer sells some gaming grade mouse pads too but if your paying over $100 for a mouse they should include one instead of the fancy box the put the mouse in.

Conclusion:

This is a very sexy looking mouse with very high DPI and polling speed but it fails to be accurate when the margin of error is razer thin (such as when using sniper rifles). It also does not come ready to use out of the box, you will need to update the firmware and synchronize the mouse with the dock after updating the firmware. Users might also have to tone down the mouse motion speed in the control panel so the pointer wont move around too quickly. It might not work with your mouse pad as its really sensitive and tends to jump around when used on some surfaces. I also highly suggest you use a gaming grade mouse pad with this as it will greatly improve your accuracy and reduce quirkiness of the mamba in games.

Pros:
- Looks really Sexy
- Simple firmware update process
- 7 buttons (2 left side, 2 small top left *controls sensitivity*, Left MB, Right MB, and Center Mouse Wheel)
- Comes with a charging dock that acts as a wireless receiver
- 5600 DPI with 1000 hz polling speed

Cons:
- Doesnt work well on some surfaces it will jump around and act quirky
- Not accurate when used with a Snipers rifle in FPS games without a gaming grade mouse pad.
- The two small top left buttons are for sensitivity ingame unless you setup a game profile for it with the mouse software.
- Expensive, a less expensive Logitech wireless gaming mouse might be just as good for less money.
- Very Short Battery Life (I guess thats why it comes with a charging station)
- Does not come with a Gaming Grade Mouse Pad that would reduce the quirkiness of the mouse.
