Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Radius Atomic Bass Aluminum Earbuds - Black

Customer Review: Great earbuds.....for a few months
Summary: 2 Stars

I just bought these earbuds, and my early review of them is that they are excellent. I've probably bought half a dozen sets of earbuds in addition to the ones that have come with the mp3 players I've bought, and these are by far the best. They aren't the cheapest, but at a little less than $40, I still think they are a good value. If you're looking for in-ear noise reducing earbuds, these are great IF you select the right pair of bud covers for them. They ship with the "small" covers attached, and when I listened to my iPod with those, I was really disappointed in the sound. I took those off and put on the "large" set, and the sound was improved 100%. My earbuds never last more than about six months since I use them for running and causual listening. I am saving all of the literature that came with them so I can take Radius up on the lifetime guarantee if these should fail. All in all, I think these are a solid product.

UPDATE 3 MONTHS LATER: As I said three months ago, I was going to save the packaging in case these buds, like all of my others, failed. Well, they did. The left channel went out while I was on the treadmill running. That's the bad news. The good news is, Radius replied to my e-mail asking them how to take advantage of their lifetime warranty on the product. And they answered immediately even though it was Christmas week. They instructed me to send the defective buds back in any container, no need for original packaging, and within 48 hours, they would mail me a replacement set. That time hasn't gone by yet, so I don't have the new ones, but I'm sure they will arrive in the next week. Great customer support from Radius.

UPDATE 10 MONTHS LATER: Well, I've had these for 10 months. Actually, I've had two pairs for ten months, and I'm getting ready to send for my third pair. You see, these earbuds are great....for about 5 months. Then they short out. The company offers a "lifetime warranty," and so far, they have lived up to that by sending me a replacement pair about five months ago. I just e-mailed them for a RMA number to return the second pair to get a third pair. As long as they keep sending me a new pair every few months, I'm satisfied because they sound great. They just aren't very durable. Without the lifetime warranty, I would say look elsewhere.

UPDATE 2 1/2 YEARS LATER: I have now had six pairs of the Atomic Bass earbuds. I purchased three pairs, and the three additional pairs were sent to me by Atomic Bass to replace failed ones. Here's the problem: Atomic Bass used to have a "lifetime warranty," so each time my earbuds failed, I simply contacted the company, and they gave me a RMA #. Shortly after returning the failed pair, I received a replacement pair. Well, apparently, they were replacing a lot of earbuds because about a year ago they discontinued the lifetime warranty. I really like these earbuds for their sound. However, I use them about 90% of the time to workout. And I'm not talking about heavy workouts. I use them when I run mainly, so there isn't a lot of drastic movement. The cords usually fail around six months. Typically, one channel begins to cut out and eventually fails altogether. Yesterday, the pair I've been using the past six months or so failed, and I had a spare set in my workout bag. I'm afraid this last set will be my last Atomic Bass earbuds because I'm not going to continue paying for something that just won't last. I intend to contact the company about this and see if I can get some sort of replacement guarantee from them, but I'm assuming they will say that since the earbuds are out of warranty, there won't be any free replacement. I guess I must say if you are buying these earbuds to listen to sitting in your easy chair, maybe they will last. If you're planning to use them while you workout, you should probably find another more reliable set of earbuds to purchase.

UPDATE AFTER CONTACTING RADIUS ABOUT THE LATEST FAILED PAIR: Typical of Radius was their response that if I had a receipt showing that I purchased the earbuds within the past year, they would replace them. Only problem is the latest pair that went bad was a pair they sent me to replace the other pair that went bad, which was a replacement for the earlier ones that went bad.....well, you get it. I was satisfied when Radius had a lifetime warranty because all I had to do is photocopy the original receipt, put it in an envelope with the bad phones, and mail both off for a replacement. As I said above, my guess is Radius was probably replacing more earbuds than they were selling, so they stopped the lifetime warranty. They will only replace the first pair you buy (and then only within in the first year of use), and considering the fact that these only last about six months, you'll only be able to get one replacement pair. As I said above, if you workout with these earbuds or if you do anything more strenuous than sit in your Barcalounger listening to Beethoven using them, look for another more durable set of earbuds/headphones.

Description of Radius Atomic Bass Aluminum Earbuds - Black

If the tunes you spin go deeper than your earphones can handle, its time for new earphones. The Atomic Bass earphones are tailor made to deliver the slamming bass of hip-hop and dance, but they are tonally balanced for any music style.

Precision crafted from the same material as the iPod Nano, and sporting a gold plated stereo mini-plug, Atomic Bass goes to the final degree to make sure everything looks and sounds perfect.

New Angle Behind the Bass
Bass sound waves are longer by nature, so it takes longer for bass energy to really get started. The unique shape of Atomic Bass features a lengthened sound chamber to let those waves develop properly.

While the sound is generated in the stylish bud, the angled tube chamber which sits in your ear canal acts as a tuned port. Penetration is deeper, and so is the rumble. This means clear, deep bass you can feel. Dont miss the sensation.

Finally, most earphones are rated at 16 of impedance. Atomic Bass earphones are rated at 32, which makes them easier to drive. This added efficiency helps to produce enormous sound, and your iPod battery doesnt have to work so hard to do it.
