I haven't had my HD100 long but wanted to write a review right away as I read some of the reviews here before buying the HD100. HD radios are too expensive in general in my opinion so it's hard to give any of them points on being a good value. I am happy with the HD100, which is one of the least expensive I found, but $100.00 for a clock radio..... No wonder HD radio hasn't advanced into people's lives much since it's birth. Enough with that and on with why we are here.
I was quite happy when I pulled my unit out of the box and saw the look and feel was much more of quality than I expected. The power supply cord had a nice jacket, not just a thin wire like most. The antenna is firmly attached with no play. The volume control is smooth. A rotery knob for volume is appreciated by me opposed to some toggle button. The radio itself has weight and a firmness to the body that has you think quality. I also like that the HD100 has a table radio style opposed to a typical clock radio style with speakers on top.
I was very happy with the sound quality of this unit. It's not overly bright or has typical thin tinny clock radio sound. The sound is warm with the frequency range it covers being decently natural. You aren't going to get deep bass or extended highs but the company wisely chose to use a speaker in the radio that is nicely balanced in response. I was also surprised how much volume the unit has after reading some of the criticisms here. You aren't going to DJ with it but it has plenty of volume for a bedroom or office. I thought the volume was adequate for the type of product the HD100 is.
The HD100 gets very good reception. I've had several radios in our dining room and this is where I unpacked and first tried the HD100. The HD100 picks up all of our HD radio stations as well as some analog stations further away that none of my other radios picked up. It is also worth mentioning we live close to some type of transmission tower that gave many of my radios a fit. They usually worked better with the antenna down because being up introduced a lot of noise. The HD100 was amazingly quiet with antenna up or down. It successfully rejected outside interference like no other radio I've owned so far. The provided telescoping antenna is a nice touch. I have a Jensen HD radio that requires one of those wire T antennas. With that I have to settle for a compromise position to get the most stations and forgo others unless I want to get up and move the thing around all the time. The HD100 got good enough reception I really didn't have to fool with the antenna much but if I do the attached antenna is more convenient. The features and controls used so far have been easy. The only issue I noted was the headphone jack directly above the #1 preset. When I plug my headphones in the preset seems to always get pushed. I guess make that preset your favorite station :)
All in all I'd recommend the HD100 for those looking for a good performing radio with basic features. It does have an AUX mini plug input which will be handy to use with my mp3 player. I bought the HD100 to use in my cubicle at work and it's perfect for that. Hopefully the HD100 will pass the longevity test.
