Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of RF Link AVS-5813 5.8Ghz A/V Wireless ReceiverCustomer Review: Dual Receiver Remote Interference (FIXED!) Summary: 4 Stars
I've had an AVS-5811 (transmitter+receiver) system for about 10 months. It sends a satisfactory signal from my TivoHD, through 1 wall and 1 floor about 20' straight line, to a 26" SD TV. As others mentioned, my only gripe is the interference when someone walks between the two units.
I had hoped to send the same TIVOHD signal, through 3 walls about 30' straight line, to a 32" SD TV, and purchased this extra AVS-5813 receiver.
- The picture is snowy and continually flashes white streaks through the picture.
- But worse yet, I can turn on only one receiver at a time, else the remote signal gets jammed.
... Looks like I have to get going on a home coax networking solution, with a remote repeater. :-(
Update 1/5/2010
I have been using the AVS-5813 as a second receiver off and on for a few months and the problems have dissipated for the most part. I can now control my upstairs Tivo w/ transmitters from both receivers at the same time. The picture has improved from snowy to a few 'acceptable' random streaks. Perhaps "outside" interference (neighbors?) on the same frequency was at play and gone away? Anyways, it's helping maintain the longevity of a couple of my older standard def TVs.
For those who wish to jump into analogous technology for HD, search for "Wireless HD", eg from Gefen ($$$$) or Brite-view ($$). I haven't made the jump yet due to distance and multicasting restrictions.
Update 11/7/2010
I was able to improve the picture quality considerably by placing a curved, parabolic shaped, piece of foil behind the receiver's antenna, pointing at the transmitter's antenna. For ideas, google or youtube "wifi antenna improve increase signal". The principle of capturing and directing more signal is the same.
The RF-Link has really extended the life of my standard def TVs by allowing me to connect them to my upstairs TIVO.
Also, I have no more "remote" jamming problems. It's possible that it was introduced by "neighborhood" interference.
