Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of RF-Link AVS-5811 5.8GHz Audio and Video Transmission System with IR Repeater

Customer Review: Very happy with the product
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using this product for a month and I'm very pleased with the purchase. I first bought a 2.4GHz Wireless A/V sender and found out real quick there was way too much interference from either my cordless phone, wireless access point, both mine and many others in my condo building, microwave or all of the above. I returned it and bought this 5.8GHz model. MUCH BETTER! I bought this wireless AV sender so I could watch my recorded shows from my living room DVR in my bedroom when I want. Both rooms have a flat screen and separatd by one wall. Pretty good video, though not quite as clear as the TV in the living room but good enough to watch and the audio is clear.

Two things to note about this 5.8GHz model is the IR remote is rather large so you have to place near but not over the IR sensor on the DVR cable box. This is so you don't block it when using the remote in the living room. Second, I noticed sometimes if walk in front of the receiver in the bedroom, the sound crackles a bit but as soon as I get out of the way, the audio is clear again. There is only one wall between the living room and bed room and it transmits without any problem. The antena is very easy to aim.

Customer Review: Great technology, bad execution
Summary: 3 Stars

Like others, I found this system easy to set up with immediately clear picture reception. The transimitter is upstairs about 40 feet and two interfering walls away from the receiver, yet the reception is great without having to spend much time on antenna adjustment.

I sent my first unit back to Amazon thinking it was broken because I could not get the IR transmitter to work with any of my VCRs or DVD players. The replacement had the same problem. What I have come to realize is that it is not a defective RF Link product, rather this IR functionality just does not work with Panasonic equipment. It works perfectly with my JVC TV and my Sony TV.

Of course the lame instructions supplied with the RF Link unit do not say anything about brand compatibility. I had to figure this out for myself, which wasted a lot of time and caused great frustration.

I am going to keep this unit and get a seperate remote control extender since this is really the only decent solution for the way my house is set up. However, I can't wait for some reputable company to introduce a 5.8ghz system that does everything it's supposed to and has good instructions and support.

Customer Review: Great Product; Poor Instructions; How to Connect to Cable Box
Summary: 4 Stars

We have a small LCD TV in our bathroom and wanted to watch cable channels from our living room cable box. This product enabled us to receive AND CHANGE any channel from our bathroom remotely. It went through 3 walls (about 20 feet) and works beautifully. I got a "pop" in the sound at first, but aligned the "dish" a little and it was eliminated. The included instructions are poor. I hooked up the transmitter to the Directv cable box with the included RCA cables to the back of the Directv HD cable box (Optical Out, color-coded) and placed the IR extension just below the front IR sensor with the supplied tape. Then, I hooked up the RF-Link receiver to our bathroom TV using the RCA inputs. Make sure both RF-Links are OFF before hooking up. Then I switched on our bath TV, changed to the "video" input (instead of TV or Cable) using the TV remote, switched on the RF-Links, and using the CABLE TV remote (from Directv) pointed at the BATH RF-Link receiver and switch the power on, remotely, for the cable box. Just make sure the little "dish" on the RF-Links face each other (concave surfaces pointed toward each other). Then fine tune the position for best reception.

Customer Review: Excellent picture
Summary: 5 Stars

I installed this product so that I can share my High Definition Comcast DVR in the first floor familiy room with another TV (standard definition) in upstairs bedroom. I was originally thinking of getting the 2.4 GHz Radio Shack product but the local Radio Shack store recommended against it (too much interference with Wi-Fi, etc.). I have 2.4 GhZ 804.11G wireless network and a 900 Hz cordless phone. The distance between transmitter and sender is approximately 50 feet with 3 walls, a staircase and a floor beween. All construction is standard wooden - no brick walls.

Getting the Video was a snap - did not require any precise alignment of antennas. Excellent picture. Getting the remote working was a bit of a hassle. After a lot of experimentation, I found out that the IR signal is too strong and it was temporarily "blinding" my DVR. After moving the unit a bit away from the DVR, the remote works perfectly. (Product manual does not have any info on this).

I also changed my DVR setting from 16x9 to 4x3 - does not affect my HDTV but gives full screen on my regular TV for HD channels.

I highly recommend this product.

Customer Review: Works well...
Summary: 4 Stars

This product is the best consumer product available for this type of A/V transmission. Using the 5.8MHz band keeps it free of the dreaded microwave oven interference, as well as interference from most cordless telephones. The picture is good, though not perfect. But it's more than adequate for all but the largest TVs (great for a kitchen-sized screen). Be sure to experiment with all four channels to find the one that works best.

The only glitch I have found is with the power. Occasionally the A/V link would fail and I would have to restart either the sender or the receiver, depending on which one failed. Also, occasionally the channel selection would change spontaneously on one unit or the other, thus breaking the link. I solved both of these problems by installing small APC battery backups on both sender and receiver unit. I think electrical storms were at the root of both problems. Since then, I haven't had a single recurrence. I've used these units now for over two years.

We don't use the IR link because we have a different one (made by RCA) that works well and serves other devices not connected by the AVS-5811.
