Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of RF-Link AVS-5811 5.8GHz Audio and Video Transmission System with IR Repeater

Customer Review: WOW....what a great device!
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was doing research on the AV Sender/Receiver I looked at many different brands. I chose this one specifically because it was a 5.8Ghz and wouldn't interfere with my wireless network or my home phone both of which are on 2.4Ghz channels. I had to mount in an odd area of my daughter's bedroom. She has a very large special order loft bed that is shaped like a house and made out of very thick MDF. She has a TV in her room but was watching it thru a window in front of the house on the top bunk which was very awkward for her. I had an extra 7 inch lcd monitor used for a portable dvd player so I hooked up the reciever to her tv/dvd player and then mounted the monitor on the underside of the roof area in the top bunk so that it can be pushed flat and adjusted for her viewing. I then hooked up the reciever to the monitor and tried it out. I asked her what movie she wanted to watch and put it in the dvd player and when the movie started playing on her new little tv she was so excited. The picture was perfectly clear with DVD or TV signal. The sound was excellent. My daughter was HAPPY that she could watch a movie in comfort. I'm thinking of getting another one of these devices for my spare bedroom for guests to be able to enjoy cable in that room. I could not be happier with this device.

Customer Review: Didn't work at all; possible defective unit
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this to replace a 2.4GHz AV sender/receiver that I got from Radio Shack several years ago. The 2.4 GHz model works fine but doesn't have an IR remote extender and also suffers interference from my microwave & cordless phone. I couldn't get the RF Link unit to work - not even a snap or pop to indicate that the transmitter and receiver were communicating at all.

I tested it out all of the 4 of the unit's channels with two different remote TVs and even different RCA cables - no luck whatsoever, even when the transmitter & receiver were pointed directly at each other from 12 feet away with nothing in between. I suspect the transmitter or receiver was defective because I could get no transmission indication. Also, when I hooked up my 2.4 GHz system using the same cables & configuration (except for the fact that the 2.4 system requires use of a coax connection between the receiver & TV in addition to the composite RCA cables, whereas the RF Link receiver doesn't have a coax connection) it worked fine.

Neither the bare-bones product manual included with the system nor the manufacturer's website contain troubleshooting suggestions and neither was at all helpful.

On the plus side, it was very easy to return the item to Amazon for a refund.

Customer Review: Much Improved Over 2.4 GHz Models
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this model to replace a 2.4 GHz model - which experienced significant interference with our microwave. The receiver end is connected to a kitchen TV that sits about 10 feet from the microwave oven. This RF Link 5.8 GHz model completely solved the microwave interference problem. I have tried the sender end on a set top box upstairs (about 50 feet from the receiver end) and another box only 12 feet from the receiver end. The reception in both cases was very good. One strange problem with the shorter tranmission is that you do get some interference when someone walks in between the sender and receiver units. This does not happen when bouncing from upstairs - so even though the transmission is further, the consistency of the signal is actually better. The IR repeater feature also works well with both the basic Verizon FIOS set top box and my TIVO box. The only negative I have experienced so far is that this device does not seem capable of carrying a 720p HD signal. The signal being sent is HD, but the signal received is clearly not HD. It is not terrible, but if you are expecting maintenance of the HD signal, you will be disappointed. If someone produces a bouncer with that capability, I will buy it immediately and will never again have to contemplate fishing cable wire.

Customer Review: Sent "USED' Non-Working Unit !!!
Summary: 1 Stars

SOMEONE SWITCHED THE TRANSMITTER FOR A USED/NON WORKING ONE!!
Recieved the 5811 Video extender yesterday. When I went to hook up the Transmitter, the packaging (not visible until removed from the box) was torn and not sealed like the rest of the components. The Transmitter had NO protective film over the IR receiver and. There were water marks and some soiled areas... There were severe scratches (from hard cleaning) on the unit. RED FLAGS WENT UP!
Since my Video System was torn apart to install this, I decided to try the Transmitter anyhow.... Line Noise, Oscillations, Rastering, Drop Out and sound problems (to name a few)bwere what I got! I'm an Electrical Engineer and my set-up is correct. In fact I was replacing an older unit because I wanted the higher frequency to stop my TV from going 'NUTS' when the cordless phone rang.
In my opinion, someone at the supplier SWAPPED the Transmitter to replace a bad one that another customer returned, or it was a return that wasn't inspected by the vendor.! (Manufacturers DON'T send USED equipment).
This is a warning about this supplier!!!
This item was fulfilled by Amazon (thank goodness) and their customer service has sent me a prepaid return and hopefully will issue a timely credit.

Customer Review: Works as advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered the AVS-5811 after reading the other reviews. It works just as advertised. I have the transmitter connected to a Cox digital box in the living room, and the receiver to an ATI input adapter (which connecets to an ATI HDTV Wonder card in my PC) in the bedroom. This allows me to view digital TV on my 19" CRT monitor, and record on the PC hard drive.

Setting it up was very simple. It works through 5 "walls" (including the wood of the built-in where the TV and digtal box reside) between the two units. The transmitter and receiver were factory set to the third channel (there are four total, each operating at a slightly different frequency around 5.8 GHz), and there was some interference. But changing both to the first channel solved this problem.

The IR mouse was my biggest concern based on the reviews, but turns out, it works very well. I had to make sure that it was placed in "line of sight" to the IR sensor of the digital box.

The quality of the picture is approximately DVD quality (although the ATI HDTV card may be upscaling the signal). In a few months, the evolution of technology will give us a product which transmits HD video, but until then, the AVS-5811 will suffice.
