Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of RF-Link AVS-5811 5.8GHz Audio and Video Transmission System with IR RepeaterCustomer Review: A good option for the analog to digital conversion Summary: 5 Stars
I am very impressed with this product. Using it in a split-level home, got the alignment right on the first attempt (hint: take care of the alignment as you install the devices, a little planning will possibly avoid some aggravation). Picture and sound are clear and crisp, digital quality (no ghosting or other analog artifacts). The IR extender for the remote was flawless. Breathe new-life into those pre-digital TVs, share a cable connection instead of acquiring an over-the-air converter box. Five stars!
UPDATE: Okay, ordered a second set and received a bad receiver (terrible audio buzz when video signal was bright or white, confirmed by swapping with a known good receiver). Returning to Amazon for replacement, will update review again upon receipt of replacement unit.
UPDATE: Amazon sent the replacement next-day at no charge, I printed the return label and sent the defective unit back to them (also at no charge). The replacement worked perfectly, and the return was processed within a week's time. So, take the time to aim the units, if it doesn't work perhaps see how the received signal looks short range (within a few feet of the transmitter). If it doesn't work short range you may want to try a replacement out first. My experience (so-far) is that this is a terrific technology, but defective units are out there.
Customer Review: I'd probably think this was great had I not owned a diff product previously. Summary: 3 Stars
We owned the Belkin PureAV RemoteTV product. It was a first gen 5.8ghz AV Sender. It was GREAT while it lasted - a little over 3 years. Belkin no longer makes the item, but because it had a lifetime warranty, they refunded the full original purchase price (GO BELKIN). Having experienced NO interference of ANY type with the 5.8ghz Belkin product, I wanted to make sure to get another 5.8ghz AV/Sender as the failed Belkin was in our Kitchen.
Enter the RF-LINK AVS-5811.
The RF-LINK was very easy to setup and get going. It litterally took longer to remove from the box than it did to get a signal going between the two. The picture quality is pretty good and after 3yrs in the house it is still nice not to have to run a wire into our kitchen to get TV. However, the signal is not as good as was with the Belkin device. Simply passing in front of, or standing in front of the device causes a crackling/popping noise from the reduced signal. The manual indicates you should have a clear line-of-sight between the transmitter and the receiver which is just not practical for what you expect to use it for.
I gave this product a 3 out of 5 because I may be somewhat biased as a result of my happiness with the performance of the Belkin. But when comparing 1 on 1, this product would have rated more closely to a 2.
Customer Review: It does everything I've hoped for Summary: 5 Stars
After quite some research on the web, I was finally convinced this system will do the trick to stream video and audio on my computer in the bedroom to my TV and stereo in the living room, and it does. There is really no trick what so ever to set it up. It's just a matter of plugging in everything.
I have a video card on my computer with S-video out. Unfortunately, the transmitter does not take S-video, so I got a S-video to RCA cable, which works just fine. Once I setup the dual display mode for my video card, I see the my desktop on TV right away. But to see video play on TV, I have to set the TV as the default display. This is where the problem come in for me.
The video cards on desktop computer doesn't routinely come in with hotkey setup to allow you switch between different displays, although most of the note book computers do. I forget to set this up before I turn the TV into default display to see the video. So once I turned my TV into default display I lost my display on monitor, and that took me quite a while to fix. But the RF Link itself just works flawless.
Now I can forget about the 300 dollar streamers that can only recognize certain files on my computer. Whatever I can play on my computer, mp3, DivX, rmvb, anything, I can also sit in my coach, watching it on TV and listening it on my big stereo, ha!
Customer Review: Great Product! Summary: 5 Stars
After reading previous reviews, both good and bad, I decided to give this a try, although I was a bit skeptical. Nonetheless, this was the only a/v sender-receiver unit that worked on 5.8 ghz that I knew of. I will say one thing though, the IR mouse is a bit tricky, being that the instructions are not too clear, but it does work once you have both uhf antennas in the proper position. Make sure the uhf antennas form an imaginary a 90 degree angle (one straight up while one is flat) within the line of site between the transmitters. All I know is that I get a crystal clear picture from my Directv receiver into a guest bedroom that is approximately 40-50 ft. away from it with two walls in between without the need for additional drilling in my home or paying for a satellite box that I will not be using on a daily basis. I can also operate the satellite box flawlessly using the remote from within the guest bedroom area. Who knows, I may want to expand my system in order to send a signal to a tv in my backyard when I'm entertaining outdoors. I guess I'll need to pay for an additional receiver, but well worth the price! Word to the wise...you get what you pay for. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THOSE CHEAP 2.4 ghz UNITS THAT ONLY GIVE HEADACHES WITH EXCESSIVE INTERFERENCE FROM PHONES, MICROWAVES, ETC. This is the way to go!
Customer Review: I have owned 2 sets of this product Summary: 2 Stars
I seldom write a negative review unless I feel there is something compellingly wrong with s product. I have owned two sets of this product as well as an extra replacement transmitter. I previously recommended this product to a friend. The major attraction was the 5.8Mhz instead of 2.4Mhz frequency utilized. My experience was as follows.
I have had two transmitters and one receiver fail. The two transmitters each got stuck on a single channel (you can select from 4 different channels). The receiver lost audio on one side of the stereo outputs. All of these items failed after one year, but less than two years after purchase. I recently requested an RMA from RFLINK. Their response was a poorly worded email response that said the unit was out of warranty and that I should go to the RFLINK web site, select "where to buy" and buy a new unit. They absolutely offered no repair/replacement alternative. Just buy new.
While a one year warranty is quite common. I do not believe anyone who purchases this item expects it to fail within two years.
The friend I recommended this item to had his unit fail within one year. He did get a refurbished replacement from RFLINK.
I recommend trying to use a competitive product even though they all seem to use the 2.4Mhz range.
