Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of RF-Link AVS-5811 5.8GHz Audio and Video Transmission System with IR Repeater

Customer Review: Wow, very easy to setup and use
Summary: 5 Stars

Having just remodeled part of the house, the last thing I wanted to do was drill holes trying to fish coax cable. Currently I'm using this in a spare bedroom while my mother-in-law stays with us to recover and I'll eventually be moving it to a different room. This was super easy to setup, had it up and running within 10 minutes without the need for reading the directions. If you do need the directions, they are very easy to follow.

How I currently have this setup is I have the cable box that is generating the signal in my bedroom and the receiver in the spare bedroom. The signal going through the walls and doors is very clear and the sound is not distorted at all. If you do get any interference there are other channels that you can change to if needed.

The only input/output on both the transceiver and receiver are RCA. I have a small cable box that I'm using that my cable company provided when all broadcasts were moved to digital and the only output on the box is coax. How I got around it is I'm using my DVD recorder to basically convert the signal from coax to RCA and then sending it to the transmitter. So basically I have the cable coming into the house going to the cable box which outputs via coax. That coax goes into my DVD recorder then I use the RCA output to go into the transmitter. A little extra work to setup, but it was well worth it.

One of the things that I love is the IR repeater that is included. With this repeater, I am able to change the channels from the room with the TV even with the cable box is in the other room.

Customer Review: Works for video, but creates an IR noise storm.
Summary: 3 Stars

These have an issue that can cause an IR storm on the IR mouse end, which can cause issues for sensitive equipment. The infrared upstream re-transmit function is 'stupid'. In other words, it transmits all IR energy that the photo diode gets triggered by; basically an IR storm at the head-end. If you have a tube TV in the receiver location, there is a ton of IR coming off the screen. I found this IR storm (noise) was able to over-ride my DirecTV receiver's living room remote when I used the IR mouse. The receive activity light on the transmitter nearly constantly flickers, even when my TV is off. Even a laptop with an infrared port can cause the receiver to transmit the output of the laptop into my livingroom.

If RF-Link could make this a 'smart' infrared receiver that rejects non-modulated IR signals that fall outside the 'normal' remote control frequencies 36Khz to 56Khz, it would be a much better solution.

It gets three stars simply because it has IR upstream issues that caused me a bunch of extra work. I ended up back at having to install a long wire along the floorboards under my carpet to my URC-9910's receiver and placing it on top of my sofa to get remote control working in my living room from my bedroom. The URC-9910 is 'smart' since it runs on RF and doesn't transmit unless a button is pressed.

By the way, the video WILL flicker out when you walk in between the transmitter and receiver. Your best bet is to mount this as high as possible at both locations. 6 feet or better should do the trick.

Customer Review: Excellent remote video transmitter
Summary: 5 Stars

I was looking for this solution for years. Tried several 2.4 GHz units but every time the noise and interference made them not usable. Until now.

This transmitter works very well, despite the fact that I have two wireless 802.11g and 802.11n (5 GHz) networks with several Windows and Mac computers (router: dual-band Apple Airport Extreme base station), a 2-line wireless 5 GHz phone system with 5 headsets and another 2.4 GHz phone system with 4 headsets. To avoid interference, I had to switch my Wi-Fi router to manual channel selection and chose one of the high channels while setting the transmitter to the 1st channel. Within 30 min everything was working.

I use transmitter with the A/V Distribution Amplifier so I have an option to view the same program on two TVs, one locally connected and one via the transmitter. My Dish Network receiver (connected to the transmitter) is located on the second floor, the 70-inch TV (and receiver) are on the first floor; the picture is as good as locally connected standard-resolution cable picture on the same TV. I did not test it in HDTV mode yet, but I'm sure it will not disappoint. Overall - a great product.

Pros: Great picture and sound.
Easy setup.
Works with satellite receiver remote.

Cons: Somewhat inflexible antenna adjusting mechanism.
No signal strength indicator.
More channels would be nice (it only has four).

Customer Review: Better than nothing, not as good as I had hoped
Summary: 4 Stars

We are using this to connect a TV in the kitchen and another one in the sunroom. (purchased one system & one additional receiver) The kitchen TV is a straight shot, 20 feet between the transmitter and receiver without anything in between the two, and it works fairly well the majority of the time. However, it gets lots of interruptions and switching between the 4 different channels doesn't seem to help at all because there is one channel that gets decent reception and the other three are simply not good. We can not watch a complete program without several interruptions. It is nice to be able to share the cable box/DVR between three different TV's though (one connected directly and the two using this system) ... it's just not as great as I had hoped. We live in a two story house on a corner lot (no close neighbors to create potential interference) and this is the only 5.8GHz item in the house and, as I'd mentioned, we're not trying to bounce the signal from one floor to the other as they claim can be done. It gets the job done for the most part but hopefully they continue to improve on the quality and come out with something better in the future. I debated between three stars or four, I gave it four because it I am happy with the quality/appearance and it's the best option I've found for hooking up a TV in a room without running cable and it allows you to expand the use of your DVR/TIVO/Cable box. I'm happy with it, just not completely thrilled.

Customer Review: The product works as stated, but not for what I had in mind
Summary: 5 Stars

Although I ended up returning the item (I'll explain later), the product works exactly as it should. I had a bit of a problem hooking it up since I don't have a cable box. My cable line goes into my VCR, then out to the TV. Hook up depends on where your direct cable line is. I called tech support and the man I spoke with (who BTW was very nice) walked me through the entire thing. Someone stated in an earlier review that it doesn't work with a Panasonic VCR. Untrue! Mine is a Panasonic. After hooking up the cables correctly, I had to put the sending TV on the TV channel for the VCR (mine is channel 3). The receiving TV however, must be put on the Aux mode or more specifically, AV 1,2, or 3. I tried this product throughout my entire house, through floors, closets, etc. It worked without a hitch. Everything came through crystal clear. My problem was I wanted to use it to send the signal to our metal pole barn which is 50 feet from the house. When I called back tech support, I was told it couldn't penetrate through metal. Therefore after much thought, I returned it. But I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to hook up cable within their house without running a lot of wires. I gave it five stars because it's an amazing product even though I couldn't use it for what I had in mind and also because the tech support was above averageRF-Link AVS-5811 5.8 GHz Wireless PAL A/V Sender AVS5811PAL CAMCORDERS CONS-Wireless Video Equipmen.
