Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of RAM Mounting Systems RAM-B-166-GA12U Suction Cup Mount for Garmin Astro 220, GPS 60, GPSMAP 60, 60C, 60CS, 60CX, 60CSxCustomer Review: Simple, solid industrial engineering. Summary: 5 Stars
RAM's design isn't complex, and it doesn't need to be. It's simple, and it works. The materials are tough and the build quality is excellent. The suction cup holds fast to every flat, non-porous surface I've tried it on. The cradle grabs the GPSr so tightly that nothing will shake or knock it loose.
The cradle makes use of the belt clip button that came with your Garmin, and it won't hold on without the button screwed in place. The mount arm's lock knob is big, easy to use, and can be positioned on either the left or right side. When the lock knob is loosened a little, the ball on the spring-loaded end of the arm loosens up first. You can put the spring-loaded end on the cradle side or the base side, meaning that you can easily move whichever side you adjust more often. Further loosening the lock knob frees up both ball joints and you get the full range of motion. Turn it more and you are able to remove the ball from the arm's spring-end, while the other end stays put. This could be handy in circumstances where you have multiple mount points, in an RV towing a car, on a boat with dual control consoles, moving to your bicycle handlebar mount, or hovercraft.
Assembly takes 3 minutes, requiring only a Philips head screwdriver.
The components are:
* A cradle that holds your Garmin
* An arm with 2 ball joints and a lock knob
* A twist-lock suction cup base
* Two (2) aluminum plates with hard rubber balls
* Two (2) sheet metal screws
* Two (2) small bolts with lock nuts
Assembly Instructions:
* Screw one ball plate onto the base using the pointy screws.
* Place the lock nuts in the holes on the face of the cradle, tapered side up
so you can see the nylon rings facing you. Bolt a ball plate on.
* Loosen the lock knob on the arm until a ball fits in the spring end.
* Squeeze the spring end of the arm and pop the other ball in place.
To put your Garmin into its cradle, push the bottom in first, and squeeze the button through the hole on the top of the cradle. To remove it, push forward on the curved arm and pull back on the tab above the round button hole. It can be quite snug.
I'm curious to see how the suction cup twist-lock assembly stands up to several years of hard use. It's the most complex and mechanically weakest component. It feels reliable however, and I think it would take someone falling against it with their full weight to damage it, and then I imagine that the suction cup would let go first.
RAM makes longer and shorter arms if you need to pimp your GPSr mount.
