Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SD/MMC/USB/MP3 Wireless In Car FM Transmitter with Remote (Black)Customer Review: Not as good as I hoped, but not terrible Summary: 3 Stars
For the price, this is not as bad quality as I feared. I bought another cheap one off eBay that would not work at all, so this easily wins between the two. I will say before I get too far into the review, that mine was used and shipping cost more than the device itself just about so it was around the same price as the new price is. I was not paying attention and just clicked buy when I saw the low price thinking they had gone on sale. The reviews left before by others had convinced me to give it a shot.
Anyways, I got the packaging, the device, remote with battery, stereo mic cable, and no fuses. I should note here, that the mic cable you may get is not what you will need for most devices. I received a mini mic to normal mic sized cable, good for maybe some mp3 players but not my Sansa Express which uses standard size mic output. So your first step would likely be switching out the cable for a better quality longer normal sized male to male mic cable. The remote is tinier than you may initially picture, and uses a 3V CR 2032 battery I believe.
I loaded up mp3s onto a 4 gb sandisk SDHC memory card, a 4 gb USB sandisk removable drive, a 2 gb sandisk microsd placed into an SD adapter, and grabbed a better cable/my full Sansa Express and hit the road. The first thing you notice when putting the memory card in, is how snugly it fits, which is fine. I would rather it not fly out while I was driving, getting lost under one of the seats. The adapter itself also fits snugly into the cigarette adapter, and feels a little weak going in as if it might break. The upside is that the display portion of the device swivels vertically to allow you better viewing depending on whether you are operating it from the driver seat or the passenger seat. The build quality is fine by me so long as it doesn't break given the price.
I put the 4 gb SDHC card in first, set it to a weaker channel area and found it with the car stereo. Even switching around the noise level of the device and the car stereo, I still have a fair amount of noise. It is not quite static and not quite a squelchy hum, but with the volume of both mangled around some, you don't notice it as much for many songs that overpower it.
It loaded the mp3s off the SDHC card fine, and tried its best to load ID3 tag info from the files. It was enough to tell the songs apart. The remote did its job though I had to remove and reseat the battery as either it wasn't powering right at first or the remote itself was not responding right away. Once I did that it worked fine. The device loaded music off both the USB drive and the microSD card properly, with the same amount of noise present. Tolerable, but annoying at times. In addition, you will have to turn down the volume on your stereo to not get blasted out as you remove the device and switch out memory cards, due to the volume level required to offset the noise.
I noticed that the DC tips of the device/plastic area that goes into the cigarette adapter was fairly warm upon the second change of memory. Mind you, I was merely sitting in my driveway, and the parking lot at the nearby grocery store, so had not been running it more than maybe 10 minutes total. I had read that some people claimed it remembered their last channel used, though my device does not do that. It returns to 87.5 or thereabouts every time I remove it and power it down. Perhaps there is a button for it, but I have not explored that far enough to know.
On the way home, I tried the mp3 player I brought along and the better quality mic cable. The line noise was somewhat less than before, but the overall volume was lower as well. You still have to turn up the stereo volume higher than you might like to compensate, which made the noise somewhat noticeable again. Perhaps there is some magical ratio between the source volume and the stereo volume, different that those mentioned in other reviews, but I doubt it. At least in my personal device, noise will be a constant companion. The noise is not comparable to that of good quality tape adapters, which some have suggested. Not in my experience so far. It is more like what you get when you fiddle with the cables on devices and you hear low harsh squelching, or fiddle with the nobs on older stereo equipment.
Could it be our car stereo's fault? Perhaps. I will try it in the other car later this week and update this if it works better on that stereo. Could it be that I just got a model with a bigger amount of noise? Yes, completely possible. I will note that I tried both FM bands that car has on its radio, FM1 and FM2. One was louder and more noise, the other was lower volume and only slightly less noise. Overall, I cannot give this device glowing reviews based on the sound quality. As far as support of memory media advertised, and the line in support, it seems to do that well. But, the key is, will everyone in your car think the same thing? Driving 5 hours to the beach with this noise might drive them mad, or make the trip less than comfortable. Only their ears will determine that for you. I recommend either setting your expectations low based on the price, or buying something a little more expensive that has near 5 stars. I am glad I got this to hold me over in our car with only a CD player, but to be honest, hoped for a little bit less noise. This will be my backup whenever I get around to buying one of the others.
