Customer Review: Flimsy: works, but likely to break

This knock-off item is cheap in more than just price, and I'm considering buying the genuine Canon article to replace it.
The hood itself is ... well, a hood. No, it doesn't have the velvet-like anti-reflective "fuzz" inside that many Canon hoods do (and other third-party lens hoods also lack), but being completely opaque black plastic it's hard to claim it doesn't do its job well. It also fits the lens somewhat "loosely", with a slight gap on one side, whereas my Canon hoods are always a snug and complete fit, but this doesn't seem likely to impact performance in any way (it just looks unprofessional).
The problem with it is getting it on the lens. I'm using it with the non-DO lens (which isn't listed specifically as compatible, but uses the same Canon hood as the DO lens and other reviewers note it fits just fine). Most times when I put it on there's a little "snap" of plastic. I looked at the hood in detail the first time this happened (ie, the first time I put it on my lens). It looks like the issue is that this hood is NOT molded completely for Canon lenses as a single piece, but instead has a more "generic" outer part which is joined to the flimsy Canon lens mount using two plastic "staples" for lack of a better description.
I can understand this as a cost-cutting measure. Instead of one mold per lens, they have one mold for all 70-300 scale lenses, and another single mold for all Canon lenses. This is probably the key to their low cost (obviously there's not much reason for $.25 of plastic to cost $20-40, aside from fixed assembly-line costs).
In my particular hood, one of the "staples" holding the hood proper to the Canon mount is loose. It tends to wiggle a little out of place (half out of its slot) while sitting in my camera bag, leading to the Canon mount piece being slightly out of place; when I put it on the lens the mount "clicks" back into place, snapping this "staple" into its place as well. I fear it is only a matter of time before the "staple" breaks and the hood's connection to the lens mount ceases to be. I have found that if I insert my fingers into the hood prior to putting it on, and manually push the "staple" back into place, the hood goes onto the lens with no issues.
Now, there are a few caveats here:
1. This is my particular copy of the hood which is having this issue. There are two staples involved, and only one of them is loose. It is quite possible (and, judging from the generally positive reviews, likely) that your copy will not have this issue.
2. The hood does indeed work. However, had I wanted to futz with something every time I want to shade the front element of my lens, I'd have made due with the even-cheaper black index card plus rubber band!
Overall, I can not recommend this product, as I seriously regret my purchase. I'll wait until it breaks to order the real thing from Canon, but I don't expect that to be very long from now. Overall, instead of saving $10, I've wasted $20.
