Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Ultra High Performance HDMI Switcher, 3to1 SwitchCustomer Review: UPDATED: Works Great!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this in hopes of hooking up my DirecTV, PS3, and Xbox 360 then routing it into my LG LHB535 BD HTS (http://www.amazon.com/LG-LHB535-Network-Blu-ray-Theater/dp/B0038KELGS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1280555218&sr=8-2). However, once I had my peripherals plugged into the 3 inputs and routed the single output into my LG quasi-amp no picture ever popped up. After about an hour of trial and error I was able to get the DirecTV to throw up a picture when plugged into one input, then once I plugged in the PS3 the picture went blank. In the effort of ensuring the product itself was not to blame, I bypassed the LG, hooked all three peripherals into the switch with the output HDMI directly into my 47" LG LCD HDTV and sure enough, picture and sound for all three inputs with no detectable loss in quality. Frustration ensued!!!! I cannot blame the manufacturer, in fact for less than $15 it is one heck of a little device with excellent practical applications. However, without routing my entertainment through my sound system (the LG LHB535 is 1000W+sub), thus negating any beneficial use to me. I will not return the item because it is works as promised. But buyer beware if you have an LG HTiB system.
UPDATE (19Feb11) - I began using this product with my PS3 and XBox 360 hooked up to this 24" Samsung displaySamsung P2450H 24-Inch Widescreen Touch of Color LCD Monitor - Rose Black. Even without the included power cord... This product works, and AUTO-switching works on priority. E.G., I have my XBox 360 on ch. 1 and PS3 on ch. 2, if I turn on both it defaults to the XBox 360. Great value for what I am able to use it for now... However, given it did not work with my LG HTiB, it makes it unusable on my 47" LCD, which is a bummer sometimes...
Customer Review: Oppo HM-31 or 3 port smart HDMI Switch? Summary: 5 Stars
Oppo has quite a reputation in the electronics that they produce and at one time Amazon actually sold their switch box. I was waiting for the Oppo version to come back to Amazon, but continually ran across the 3 port smart HDMI Switch that had lots of positive reviews. At $18+ it was certainly worth the risk because that is more than $80 less than the Oppo version and I could return the unit if it didn't work. My previous HDMI switch came out of Monoprice and after one week it was determined that it was incompatible with my hardware which came down to a Panasonic A/V receiver and a Panasonic HD plasma screen. So I ordered the $18 switch box and received it in two days because of Amazon Prime, hooked it up, and lo and behold it worked!! It comes with a remote control and an IR extender, both of which I don't need because of its priority system and its ability to detect a turned on device. The top priority is the HDMI connection labeled #1 with #3 having the least priority. Once my dvd players were hooked up to this switch, by just turning the unit on, the switch box has a red light that comes on and the darn thing works automatically, recognizing the turned on device and porting that to the A/V receiver. My usage does not require an AC adapter in the use of this switch box. I wouldn't think that much can go wrong with this box, but at least one other review reported problems after 1 week. Should this unit fail, I may still end up with the Oppo, but for now am more than pleased with this smart switch box that really works. One of the big factors for me was that the order was fulfilled by Amazon, meaning that it was returnable and without any hassle. I would certainly give this unit a try and if it didn't work then go for the Oppo HM-31, but only if the order is filled by Amazon. Oppo no longer offers an HDMI switch box.
Customer Review: Great, inexpensive way to add more HDMI ports to your receiver Summary: 5 Stars
I bought an HDMI capable A/V receiver about a year ago. Recently, I purchased a new Xbox 360 Slim but have used up both HDMI inputs on the receiver. I was skeptical about buying an HDMI switch as there are all sorts of compatibility issues with HDCP etc. I gave this switch a chance because it was very inexpensive. It turns out that this little switch works great with my equipment. The auto-switching feature seems to work just fine with two HDMI devices plugged in. It automatically switches to an input when you power on the device. My only complaint with the switch is that the blue input indicator LEDs are very bright. However, this was easily solved with a piece of electrical tape. As it says on the box, no AC adapter is necessary, and although it includes an IR dongle and remote, I haven't had to use them because of the auto-switching feature. Just a reminder, you will probably want to buy an extra HDMI cable online to connect the switch to your TV or receiver because retail stores charge an arm and a leg. I docked the "Accessories Included" a star because of the lack of AC power adapter (for those who might need it), lack of user's manual, and it would have been nice if they included a short HDMI cable.
To help answer a few questions about compatibility, I am using the following equipment with this HDMI switch:
- Panasonic TH-50PX60U Plasma Television
- Denon AVR-2808CI Receiver (built-in HDMI switch)
- Input 1: Xbox 360 Slim
- Input 2: PS3 Slim
I don't turn on both the PS3 and Xbox at the same time so the auto-switching works great for me. Overall, I am very happy with this switch, but always keep in mind that there is no guarantee that this switch will work in your system. The good news is that this product is fairly inexpensive.
Customer Review: This is the perfect HDMI switch Summary: 5 Stars
This is simply perfect. If you're considering a switch, chances are you have an old TV with only one HDMI input (old is a relative term here, of course). You're also probably trying to hook up a new DVD player (maybe BluRay) to the TV and the HDMI input is taken up.
This is the perfect switch for this kind of setup because of how it gives priority to what is connected in input1 over input2 then over input3.
I have a DirecTV DVR which is connected to my TV via HDMI. I bought a new Sony BD player, the BDP-S580; which outputs high definition only over HDMI (be careful of that if you're in the market for a BD player, anything built after Jan 1 of 2011 can only output HD over HDMI, no more HD over component!). This switch takes care of the problem. If my DVD player is on (connected to input1 on the switch), it will get priority over my DirecTV DVR. Once I turn the DVD player off, my DVR (connected to input2 on the switch) takes over. Since my DVR is always on, this works perfectly.
Oh, and you don't need to connect the switch to the power. it comes with a remote, which I have no use for, either. All you need is the switch.
There was no difference in the picture with or without the switch. I did not test it on a 1080p TV, the TV I had is only 720p or 1080i. If you have a TV with only one HDMI input, there's a very good chance it's not 1080p anyway. The switch is rated for 1080p, I just can't vouch for that in this review since I didn't try it.
I intend to buy 3 more of these switches for all my TVs. Even the ones that have multiple HDMI inputs don't do the auto-switching by priority (only 1 of my TVs does that). So this switch, given its low price, is a good solution/workaround for the inevitable TV input switching that you have to do.
Customer Review: This switch works GREAT for me.... Summary: 5 Stars
After reading the reviews on Amazon, I had no idea if this thing would automatically switch my devices or not, but for Amazon's price of [...] (including shipping) compared to $35 or $40 for a similar device at Wally World, I figured I'd give it a shot. I only have 2 devices. A local company Cable TV box (not Comcast) and a Blu Ray Player I use with Netflix. I have no idea how this thing works, maybe I was just lucky, but it works perfect and will auto-swap to whichever device is on. I hooked up my Blu Ray player to port 1 and cable box to port 2 and it worked fine. I then swapped them to see what would happen and it worked correctly either way.
The switch comes with a tiny IR sensor, for increased remote reception, with about a 4 foot cable that you hook into the tiny port marked "IR". Using the double stick tape about the size of a dime, you can place the sensor at a discreet location away from the switch (like on the front of your TV stand?) and in a more direct line with the remote. The remote does work fine, though I haven't needed it since the switch will go to whichever device is on, in my case anyway. I have absolutely NO IDEA what the "5V" power plug is for! No power cord/transformer was included or needed for the device to work.
Picture quality is excellent. I watch TV in HD and Netflix movies all the time. Picture and sound quality is great. The switch does not diminish the quality of either at all that I can tell.
If you don't have an HDMI cable for each device, switch to TV, Cable box to switch, Blu Ray player to switch, 3 in my case, I'd suggest you order them when you order the switch. I COULD have bought one for [...] on Amazon when I ordered the switch and had to pay $30 for one later. I had no idea they cost so much.
