Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Polycom Communicator C100S USB Speakerphone for Skype-GreyCustomer Review: Great way to Skype, some minor issues Summary: 4 Stars
I've had the speakerphone for several months now, here are my comments:
Pros:
Installation is trivial - install software, plug and play. 5/5
Sound quality is great in and out. 5/5
Skype works great with it because it can manage its audio I/O sepearately from windows. You can mute windows and still work with skype.
Cons:
No nice, simple, clear, red disconnect-call button. 3/5
No manual volume control. The volume is control through windows. This means that if windows is off doing its own thing (i.e., unresponsive) you're stuck with all the controls NOT WORKING. A manual mute and volume controls would be much preferred. 1/5
The wire is held inside the back of the unit in a closable compartment. Alas, it is sometimes hard to fit inside that compartment. 4/5
Customer Review: High quality business communications tool Summary: 5 Stars
I used the Polycom Communicator on a trip to England, Germany, India, and Brazil. It (and Skype) gave great sound quality in both directions on conference calls from hotel rooms in all of those countries, modulo the occasional minor dropout in the sound.
The build quality is high. It may look a bit plasticky in the pictures, but it has metal speaker and microphone grills, rubber feet that make it feel solid when you set it on a table or counter, a good feel to the buttons and a cool glowing ring of indicator light around the buttons that lets you know when you're on a call, muted, etc.
It packs down so well that I don't use the neoprene case. Having a business quality Internet speakerphone is so great an advantage that from now on I won't travel on business without it.
Customer Review: great purchase Summary: 4 Stars
I got to test drive this product while in London, thanks to a co-worker. I fired up Skype and it worked right away. I didn't even install the program that came with it that integrates it.
once I bought it I installed the Polycomm program and you had instant Skype integration and awesome sound quality. There are a couple usabilty things I modified (which made me give it a 4 stars instead of 5).
I have now used this with Yahoo voice chat and Google with great success. You don't get feedback, the mic is pretty directional and the speaker quality better than good. You cant press it too far to get excellent.
So a good purchase for the road warrior that wants hands free VOIP ability. It comes with a nice bag and even a Skype coupon
Customer Review: Absolute pile of **** Summary: 1 Stars
It doesn't work. At all. I have spent upwards of 15 solid hours installing, uninstalling, reinstalling, updating firmware, upgrading and downgrading between versions of Skype, all on two different computers with different versions of Windows, just to be sure it wasn't me. Oh, and waiting days for Polycom's lame customer service to reply to my emails.
I should have realized what I was letting myself in for when the installation CD came up with a dialog box telling me it couldn't find the file to start the install (turns out they set the autorun to the wrong path, so you have to navigate through the CD's contents and find it yourself. That shows you just how little attention has been paid to getting this product right).
AVOID AVOID AVOID!
Customer Review: Far better than other options Summary: 4 Stars
Bought this as my second Skype speakerphone. As expected with Polycom products, it's well made. What I was skeptical about was the quality, yet using it in a loud office with multiple callers was no problem.
My only quibble is the software: it takes over your Skype. I use a headset most of the time, but Skype always wants to use the Polycom; you have to change audio sources when you start up to teach it to ignore the Polycom. Even then, it annoys you with every inbound or outbound Skype call that the Polycom is not currently the default. Yes, you can plug headphones into the Polycom, and use the mic on the speakerphoen instead of a headset, but that gives the caller the speakerphone effect regardless.
Overall, however, great product.
