Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Polk Audio RC80i 2-Way In-Ceiling Speakers (Pair, White)

Customer Review: Fantastic speakers
Summary: 5 Stars

These speakers are great. Installation was much easier because the large, 8" opening you cut into the wall/ceiling makes it much easier to fish speaker wire. The mounting brackets securely fasten to the wall so there is no shaking or rattling. The tweeter can easily pivot to aim at your listening position. These are voice matched to the Polk "Monitor" series speakers, so match with any other RC series in-wall speaker, CS1 or CS2 center channel speaker, and PSW10 or PSW12 subwoofer.

My only 2 complaints, which were not enough to drop the rating, are:
1) The speaker cutout template turned out to be a tad small, and I had to go around with a keyhole saw again to make it 1/8" larger to fit the speaker all the way. That made it a little messier, but it ended up fine.
2) The speaker grill is pretty hard to remove, but you only have to do that once, and you want it to fit snugly anyways.

Customer Review: Great Value Speaker
Summary: 5 Stars

I was hesitant to install these myself, but once I cut the first hole in the drywall of the ceiling everything else was easy. The instructions were very clear and easy to understand. They addressed any questions I had. Like previous reviewers, I'd also recommend cutting just around the outside of the line you trace using the template.

I was told the hardest part is running the speaker wire through the ceiling, basement, etc. This turned out to be true. I'd definitely recommend running the speaker wire and figuring out placement before you order these. This includes making sure there aren't any studs, electrical wires or pipes in the 10 inch area behind the ceiling where you plan to install each speaker.

These are a great value (got them for around $125 for the pair with free shipping), easy to install and sound great. I use them for TV and music.

Customer Review: great speakers, easy to install
Summary: 5 Stars

These rc80i's were simple to install. Much more difficult getting the wiring to where you want it. Just cut the hole and there are 'posts' that swing over to clamp onto the wall. Screw down and it's done.

Only gripe is that you have to take off the wire grill to get to the screws, and you need to use a paperclip to do this. It was kind of a pain and I deformed some of the grating getting it off. Can't really tell once it's far away (on the ceiling) though.

I have a big room w/ tile and couldn't set up bookshelf speakers in good location. The sound from these blows away the speakers I was trying to use. Sound is rich and full. I mainly use it for surround sound when listening to movies/playing games, and I can definitely hear thing I never noticed (gravel crunching, rain falling, etc). Very happy with these speakers.

Customer Review: Great sounding speakers for an awesome price.
Summary: 4 Stars

I would have given these speakers five stars had the speaker grills already been removed before opening the box. While not difficult, removing the speakers grills is kind of a pain, and I would be awarding five stars had the manufacturing simply left them off so that they could be installed once the speakers are in the wall.

I installed a pair of these in my dining room to compliment a pair of Polk outdoor speakers. Installation was a piece of cake. The templates worked perfectly, and hooking these things up was no problem. Oh yeah, and they sound awesome! These things can shake my chandelier with the volume on my receiver only set at 16 (it goes to 75). Not to mention I can also hear them pretty much throughout my whole house at that low level.

Polk Audio impresses me again.

Customer Review: Okay for the price, barely noticable
Summary: 3 Stars

Installed these into my ceiling for a 5.1 setup ... using Polk Monitor 70's in the front with CS2 center channel. Since my attic has blown insulation, I built enclosuers (1.47 cubic feet each) that drop between the rafters with openings just big enough so that I can still mount the speakers on the dry wall. I only notice the speakers once or twice during a movie ... helicpoters, gun shots, etc. But other than that I can't even tell there anything there.

Speakers where easy to install, grill come off with little effort, but just not much sound coming from them even after adjusting the surround L/R speaker levels on my reciever ... maybe the M70's are just too over powering for these surrounds. I'm glad I didn't go with the Tc80's ... I cant image them being any much better than these.
