Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Polk Audio RC60i In-Ceiling / In-Wall Speakers (Pair, White)

Customer Review: The perfect complement to your H/T system
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm your average Joe who wants maximum bang for my buck. Stereophonics and the sort are not my strength, researching a purchase is. I got the RC80i's as the CEILING surrounds (back speakers) for my H/T. Whereas I've done the homework in detail, I'll give you the final poop on my findings. Specs vary only slightly between models in the $100-200/pair range. THE KEY consideration is how your speakers are situated (relative to the listeners), AND, what is the layout of the room of interest. These 2 items alone should drive you out of the "high-end" market since you'll never be able to discern an audible difference outside an ideal environment.
Install was EASY! Threading wires between the floor/ceiling of a 2 story, not so easy. I have an older Sony receiver the supports all the goodies up to 5.1 of which I'm only using 5. (My Realistic fronts have 15" bass cones. If repairing cracks in my walls/ceiling was fun, I'd introduce a woofer). The center is a Polk CSi-A4.
On first use I thought the RC80i's were substandard. Couldn't hear much from them. Patience was a vertue. Ten minutes into our 1st movie we realized that they're only involved when THAT CHANNEL has been programmed within the movie. When they are used, the listener is engulfed in sound and the RC80i's complement the process. Remember that surround speakers are "complementary" to the TOTAL sound, (birds, motorcycle, dogs, ecco effect, ect.) not the equivalent of the center and front speakers, that's not their role.
You can (should) buy these with no hesitations. 69 high reviews should not be overlooked. If I spent less, I most likely wouldn't have enjoyed the quality I'm getting. If I spent more, I'd probably kick myself for unnecessarily wasting dollars. Great value. Excellent sound. Benefit from my research.

Customer Review: Surprisingly good (and cheap!)
Summary: 4 Stars

I was looking for surrounds for my new 7.1 theater in the basement. I spent way too much on the front 3 and sub, so I was looking for a way to cut back a little without sacrificing too much in sound. Fortunately, these low end Polk RC60i speakers fit the bill perfectly. I have heard some other in ceiling speakers in this price range and was wary of what the competition was offering.

I was pleasantly surprised when I had these Polk RC60i speakers installed and hooked up to my AVR. Now, although they are rated for 20-100 watts per channel per the Polk Audio website, my AVR pushes 140 WPC @ 8 ohms and the RC60i's handled the extra power flawlessly. Before I had the entire 7.1 system installed, I ran a pair of these as the fronts and was able to turn the volume up quite loudly without any audible distortion.

Installation was easy (I bought a drywall "circle cutting" tool from Lowes that made things a LOT easier). The most important steps occur BEFORE you cut the drywall. Plan and mark your speaker locations using the templates as guides. Then, drill a small pilot hole in the middle of your circle and then use a stiff wire bent at a 90 degree angle (an old wire hanger works well), make sure the arms are slightly longer than the radius of the speaker, insert one arm into the hole and "sweep" around in a circle to make sure you clear any unseen obstructions behind the drywall. The only other difficult part is pulling the speaker wire. Thankfully, the cutout gives you more than enough room to stick your arm into the wall to help you fish.

All in all, great Polk sound at a good price. What's not to like?

Customer Review: Not bad for the money
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought these speakers to replace a speaker that had started to go out. I had a set of Infinity ERS110 speakers on my patio, 1 of them started getting static (6 years old) so I did some research and bought these Polk speakers. I bought the pair just incase the other Infinity goes out. Ease of installation was perfect, it fit into the existing hole and I had it in place and playing music in less than 5 minutes. The problem is that it is very thin sounding compared to the Infinity. I left the working Infinity in place and installed 1 Polk in the broken Infinity's place. You can definitely tell the difference between the 2 speakers. The Infinity is much louder and has more base. Clarity on the Polk is good, I just wish it had more substance. As they are outside speakers I am not too concerned, I'm sure my neighbors will appreciate the quieter sounds, but if I was installing them inside for my TV or stereo I would definitely spend more money and choose another brand or style. Delivery was excellent, I bought them on Monday morning and they were delivered on Tuesday night.

Customer Review: Great product, but what do you expect from Polk Audio!
Summary: 5 Stars

Just got this installed last week. The speakers have a neat little clip for easy mounting in a drywall ceiling. The templates provided are accurate and easy to use. Took about ten minutes each to install. I spent much more time running the wires through my attic, but I obviously cannot blame that on the speakers. Now that they are installed, all I can say is wow. The sound is crisp and clear. The aimable tweeters gives you a lot more flexibility in your mounting location. As with any speaker, sound is a matter of personal preference. I have noticed that these speakers seem to impress people that are a little older (like mid 30's and up) more than the younger crowd. I suspect it is because the younger ears can hear the higher frequencies better. I have always enjoyed the crisp highs that I have gotten from Polk Audio. Once again they have been able to impress me.

Customer Review: Great sounding In-Ceilings
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought 2 pairs of Polks for in ceiling stereo use over my bar area I am building in the basement. I'm a first time Polk buyer and in ceiling user and I am impressed at the audio quality. I am also using the other pair as the back surrounds in a 7.1 home theater system. Polk has a huge following in the AV forums so I was confident these would work for me. I also listened to them in the electronics store prior to buying through Amazon. To maximize the sound quality, Polk recommends you place a modest amount of a sound absorbing material, such as Polyfil (a synthetic cotton-like material found at craft/fabric stores) inside the cavity before installing the speakers. This will absorb the rear moving sound wave and reduce mid range coloration. I haven't done that yet and they still sound great!
