Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Pocket Wizard FlexTT5 Transceiver For Canon TTL Flashes and Digital SLR Cameras

Customer Review: needs work
Summary: 2 Stars

The Pros , ETTL works ,flash compensation works from the camera(1DIII & 1DsIII)I am assuming the 5D II as well. There is no need to have a 580exII on top of the flexTT5 for this funtion to work. This is great for those of us who have not yet mastered full manual yet !
The Cons , I could only get my units to fire at 30 feet , seems that infrared output from 580exII prevent radio signals from reaching unit. Pocket Wizard shows you (website) how to overcome (somwhat)this with the use of unit seperating ideas . They explain how to use a longer arm to seperate the 580exII and the flexTT5 and how to connect the two with a cable and the use of a shield over the cable(Speedlite side). I don't know about you but I don't want to carry and put together anymore "stuff" than I have to.The flexTT5 looks and feels like a toy (cheap) , be VERY carefull with it ! On my first shoot , I placed the unit on a Manfrotto 5001b stand , the placed the 580exII on top of it (where its supposed to go). The flexTT5 became "unglued" at the shoe between Speedlite and flexTT5. Pocket wizard said they had heard of this happening and would replace it at no cost to me . I actually spoke with a real person when I called the company , and that alone makes for good customer service !

Conclusion , I know that when you have an idea , you test it first before you have it manufactured . Pocket Wizard plans to market a "shield" that keeps I.R. signals from affecting the TT5 , we will just have to see about this one . I purchased four units before any of this info was available and now wish maybe I should have waited for the reviews !

Customer Review: Don't need TTL, but Like the Trim Design
Summary: 4 Stars

I realize that the point of these new pocket wizards is that they can use TTL information to control the settings of Canon flashes and thereby do more than the basic pocket wizards, which just trigger remote flashes and strobe lights. However, I don't want or need the TTL feature. I mostly use strobe flashes. I only occasionally use a Canon flash, remotely. When I do, I manually set it the Canon flashes and use my Pocket Wizard MultiMAX transceivers. So if the TTL features isn't working as well as some reviewers here say--even after the firmware upgrade--it doesn't really matter to me. For simple flash triggering, it works fine.

If you have the same needs as do I, consider my reasons for buying this pocket wizard: I bought one of them because I needed another pocket wizard flash trigger and decided that the design for the FlexTT5 has a more minimal profile. It looks slicker and it's not as nerdy as the other models. With the MultiMax, it looks like I have a small walkie-talkie attached to the top of my camera. I don't mind my MultiMax transceivers attached to my strobe lights, but I wanted something more trim for my camera. As for cost, the FlexTT5 is about eighty dollars cheaper that the MultiMax and has all of its features. It's also only fifty dollars more than the PocketWizard PLUS II, which is limited in features.

Customer Review: Great system, should become the industry standard soon
Summary: 4 Stars

I have the PocketWizard MiniTT1 Radio Transmitter for Canon TTL Flashes and Digital SLR Cameras and FlexTT5 combo and it's a great system. Granted, there were some issues early on, but PocketWizard has released new firmware which addresses the issues. The great part about this system is that you can update the firmware easily for increased functionality and usability.

I also really like the little MiniTT1, it's much better for on camera mounting than the older PocketWizard models, which felt like a skyscraper on top of the camera. At first I was a bit leary of having to have a round lithium battery instead of AA batteries (the FlexTT5 does take 2 AA batteries), however I have been using the MiniTT1 on several shoots and the battery shows no signs of being drained at all. You could use two FlexTT5 units if you want to however the MiniTT1 is so nice and small, I can even put the camera in my camera bag with it still attached.

I recommend this system over any other system. It's the most extensible and is well on the way to becoming industry standard. The only reason I'm not giving the full 5 stars is because I received a defective unit at first (the serial number was not recognized by the PocketWizard utility and it would not allow a firmware update). I exchanged it for a new one and all is well now. Also, the price is a bit expensive.

Customer Review: Pocket Wizard Performance
Summary: 4 Stars

I have read the reviews for Pocket Wizards vs. other remote triggers and I think I know what the problem is, people do not read the instructions. At first, the Flex and Mini seemed not to work well. The solution was to update all the units at the same time via USB to the latest software (They are always coming out with new updates - like for my 7D and autodetect). The next thing is to read the ONLINE manuals! These are not necessarily "plug and play", but if you follow the instructions they work marvelously, have a lot of flexibility and features. There is an issue with IR interference and the Canon Speedlight 580EX II. The work around is IR shield which is a little extra hassel. Since I already invested in the equipment, this was a small price to pay for a fix. I have placed two 580's on the Flex in my kitchen at night to see the light, and could fire them with the mini on my camera from over 150' away. I don't know about you, but I usually don't take pics from that distance. I also like the fact that there is no cord when you use the hot shoe and I can use the Flex for a remote shutter release. I did not give 5 stars because of the IR interference, but I like these units. They are compatible with the the other models of Pocket Wizard.

Customer Review: What a wonderful item to own?
Summary: 5 Stars

I brought 2 of the flex TT5 and one of the Mini TT1. At first, i wasn't sure why it didn't work as far as it suppose to. I noticed there is a bag in the box of the flex TT5. After i watched videos from youtube video by Mark Wallace. He stated there is a bag in the Flex TT5 that block your infrared signal and you can use your radio slave at no problem at a very far distance. Thank GOD for the bag. I almost return it and exchange with the Multi-Max. This flex and the mini work so perfect for my speedflash and my flash units for my studio. If you brought the Sekonic l-758dr, make sure you DL the software if you want the test trigger to work since it have a built-in pocketwizard and change your setting on the flex if you want the studio flash units to work and you don't have the change the setting for the mini except for updating the software to the new version. You can change to Channel 1 or 2.. I set my on channel 1 speedflash and channel 2 for my flash units. You have to go to the setting and change the setting on the device inorder to work.. If you have no idea how to do it, please just call pocketwizard or sekonic. They are very helpful..
