Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Plustek Opticfilm 7300Customer Review: Plustek OptiFilm 7300 Summary: 4 Stars
I like the hardware.......now. After several installs, removals, and reinstalls of the programs and drivers, I called support on day 2. I was talked through a download and install (I tried this once before) of the drivers. It was suggested that I not use the SilverFast program. I tried SilverFast again on Day 3. I couldn't get it to open the program (I DID type in the correct serial number, but it says I did not).
What I do is just use the OpticFilm drivers and programs and scan the image to a folder which I can then open in a photo editing program. If the film strips are ready to go it takes about 50-60 seconds to make an image file. Hard to believs all the scratches in 35 year old negatives. I am finding no advantage to go beyond 2400 dpi on these negatives.
Customer Review: Good at the reduced price Summary: 4 Stars
Setup was little problem, both hardware and software. I was scanning in less than a half hour.
The included Silverfast software controller is absolutely necessary to make it produce accurate contrast and density.
The highest resolution is quite impressive with legacy Kodachromes BUT at max resolution it takes MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES to scan one slide.
So if you want to go into business converting other people's legacy film collections - this won't give you adequate throughput. But if you are converting your own legacy slides/negatives and are willing to prune your past down to the better images at this point, then this slide scanner is a cost effective solution.
In short: good results but painfully slow.
Customer Review: Not only Mac but Windows to... Summary: 5 Stars
The "Silverfast SE plus Mac Os" inference is very misleading in the title of this scanner. After researching the model no. and checking on the Plustek Website; I rolled the dice and bought this scanner for use on a Windows Vista computer.
As I suspected; the Mac name in the title is misleading... The scanner comes with two disks. One with the scanner drivers and basic scanning software... The other with the SilverFast SE Plus... BOTH for Mac and WINDOWS... So if you are a Windows Vista, XP or 2000 user; fear not. It is supported...
The installation was straight forward. There is a mild learning curve in the use of the software. However, I haven't yet come up to full speed on using it. My initial scans have been quite good... Stay tuned...
Customer Review: Shame on Amazon Summary: 1 Stars
Shame on Amazon. I ended up with the Plustek Opticfilm 7200 as that was the only one available when I purchased it in November, 2009. I turns out the unit was 3 Models old and was probably 3 years out of date. I continue to be plagued with problems, incompatibility with Windows7 and the constant failure of the unit to sync to my PC without the need to uninstall and reinstall software each time I try it. When I finally contacted Amazon only 90 days after purchasing the unit, I was advised they would not accept it for return and that I would have to deal with the manufacturer. I don't know if the 7300 is anymore compatible with Windows7 or not. Just be advised that the product is at least 2-3 Models years outdated.
Customer Review: Works great Summary: 4 Stars
The 7300 works great. I have a lot of old slides with dirt and scratches.
You can just set up how much definition you want, till you see the scratches, and back off.
The software is great, as one other user said :"Don't even try the quick scan" Use the silverfast software, it is great.
I did have one problem, one of the 35mm slide slots in the holder won't take a slide, something broken. I tried to write the Plustek co , to find out where I could buy another holder. No answer. I sure would like to buy a few more holders, but could not find any on internet.
As usual, once you have the unit, good luck finding any parts. That is why I gave it 4 stars intead of 5 stars.
Frank
