Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Plustek Opticfilm 7300

Customer Review: great product but no support
Summary: 4 Stars

the scanner comes with 2 software cd's. i installed the one that is for the 7300 and not the Silverfast which i was saving for later. after the software installation said Finish i finished but i did not think the software really installed correctly. i began to use the scanner. i have about a zillion slides i want to put on dvd. i scanned in 2 slides and got 2 itty bitty 9k images smaller than a thumbnail. i still suspected a software install problem as when following their procedure one screen display never appeared.i then tried to install Silverfast and it crashed my system. i uninstalled the first software and tried a reinstall. no go.

i went on plustek web site and submitted a tech support request.
four weeks later no answer.

eventually i found out my dvd player was crapola and had gone flakey on me right about the time i got my plustek. after installing a new dvd i got a good install from both softwares and i am up and running now!

product is great, both softwares similar and both are good.

so provided your dvd player is operative i recommend this product.

Customer Review: great

this thing is great. i can't say enough about it. i took my grandmothers old negatives and created a shutterfly site with all of the pictures and shared it with the entire family. the only draw back is the time it takes to scan an image. i settled in on 18mb .tiff file output and it takes about 1 min to do each negative. to first pre-scan, adjust and then scan. that also counts the time it takes to mount the negatives in the tray. it would be nice if the tray held 8 35mm images because the negatives i have are cut in 4 image segments.

just a heads up. don't bother with the included drivers they are a waste and crash the software a lot. dl the latest stuff and start from there. i do have to say that the included silverfast software with the included film color profiles is great.

i have scaned over 3000 images and i would call this a deal at 2 or 3 times the price. it is all most priceless and i am glad i got this product. if you are considering it. go for it you will not be disappointed.

Customer Review: Excellent device at great price
Summary: 5 Stars

The Plustek Opticfilm 7300 has proven to be an excellent scanner. The software installation was a snap ans altough the instructions are a bit scattered they come together as one uses the machine. After trying four other scanners with poor results the Opticfilm has been has given me results which capture the quality of the aoriginal film image. The included software provides enough adjustments that most difficult exposures can be adjusted for acceptable results prior to scanning (and detailed fixes can then be made in photoshop). I have scanned about 700 slides with the Opticfilm ( scan times can be a bit slow depending on dpi and details selected) the results are worth the time. Anyway the scan time can be put to good use - selecting other slides for scanning or reading a good book for example. Usually I find some point of disappointment with photo electronics ( I'm an old school film photographer who began making the digital transition about 2 years ago) but the Opticfilm 7300 has performed a great job.

Customer Review: Good slide scanner
Summary: 4 Stars

The Silverfast software makes this a must purchase. Digitizing several thousand slides with all manner of color problems and uncleanable dirt is a problem that this scanner and software handles nicely. It takes time to remove specks and problems but really does a nice job. So far I've done several hundred and the instant scan (no warmup) works perfectly. I chose to scan at 300dpi jpg which results in perfect 4x6 prints with the downside being a cost of 6meg a scan. Tiff, while better, is just too large to consider for family snaps when talking about thousands to store. I do choose the highest scan rate for archival slides. Like anything there is a "getting used to it" learning curve, but it flows pretty fast. Initial prescan lower rez scan takes about 15 secs and the actual scan takes about 45secs. Of course you need to factor the time you might spend color correcting etc. Slides are really leftover dinosaurs... and this is perfect for bringing the pix into the digital age.

Customer Review: Makes scanning slides easy
Summary: 5 Stars

I just received my scanner today. Wonderful. This puts flat bed scanners to scan slides to shame! I've tried several gadgets and flat bed scanners over the years to scan slides and it was a royal pain in the butt.

The setup was quite easy. After installing the drivers (the support website had the new drivers for Windows 7) I was able to use Gimp to acquire images from the scanner. I was able to scan 4 slides in about 4-5 minutes. Very easy and very quick.

I would recommend if you buy this to use Gimp or make sure to get the newer version of SilverFast if you're using Windows. The SilverFast software provided with the scanner I received didn't recognize the new drivers properly so I can't use the software. I don't care, however, as I can use Gimp to acqure the images from the device.

I am rating it 5 out of 5 beause these have dropped significantly in price and is the first scanning device that does the job on slides very well.
