Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Plustek OpticFilm 7200 7200DPI Film Scanner

Customer Review: Good optical quality, poor documentation and software
Summary: 4 Stars

The product delivers excellent quality for the price. Slide scanning is easy and the machine is beautifully calibrated. However, don't even think of installing the accompanying software if you're using Windows Vista. Instead, first download and install the latest scanner driver from Plustek. Then register the SilverFast software (a confusing process), download the latest version for your operating system. Some online users suggest that you need to purchase the latest SiverFast version, but that's not true. You can download the latest version for free if you first register the shipped software. It took me an hour of tinkering before I could scan my first slide, but it was worth it. This is probably the best negative and slide scanner in this price range. If you're willing to use a used model, you can find it even cheaper.

I would avoid calling Plustek customer support if you can. Trust me on that one.

Customer Review: Very Happy
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the VuPoint FS-C1-VP film and slide converter through Amazon about a month ago and had to return it because it simply was a piece of junk. Amazon was great at refunding my money ($106) in a very short period of time also paid shipping and handling. I then purchased a Plustek OpticFilm 7200 from Amazon for approx $191.00 and am very happy with the results. I have Windows Vista Home Premium and this was not a problem. I have converted 35 year old slides with no problem, it removes scratches, dust very well, I'm sure in the hands of a more qualified photographer it would perform even better, but I am happy. I have converted about 400 slides to date with an couple of hundred to go and then on to the wifes many negatives. I did a trial run on a few negatives and it looks very promising. Bottom line is don't waste your money and time on the VuPoint get the Plustek OpticFilm 7200.

Customer Review: Excellent idea, poor execution
Summary: 1 Stars

Installation and setup was a breeze. Then first disappointment: the scanner produced nothing. A series of color dashes and dots for negative scan, a dark rectangle for positive scan. I've tried to pull and push the cables, buttons, and when I was about to pack it up, I've noticed a good picture on my computer screen. Without specific reason it started running all right and I was able to get about entire 35 mm film scanned. Since it became late in the night, I closed the scanning business for the night, enjoying perspective of laborious weekend. It was really laborious, since the scanner started again same way as in first day, but never returned to the proper working mode. So, no more scans. Now, pack it up into the original package and send it back.
I don't know if it was a single case of bad piece of hardware, since other users are enchanted with this item. But beware.

Customer Review: Slide / Negative Scanner
Summary: 4 Stars

I am happy with my purchase of the Plustek 7200 scanner.
The results are amazing! Very Happy!!

What I did not like ...
- Instructions. The quality of instructions (starting from installation of app) could have been far better. More detailed and systematic.
- The "Scratch & Dust Removal app" crashes randomly. The Plustek help online was little help. I have to live with it. [Again could be a problem with the quality of information/solution - not up to the mark.]

Now the good news...
- Quality of scans was excellent! - Great resolution.
- Scratch Removal & Dust Removal App - when it did the job (80% of the time) - it was AWESOME!!
- Allows a fair bit of color/brightness/tone/contrast corrections - very handy.
- Has a handy preview light-Box window on the top - nice!

Good Value for money!

Customer Review: Excellent but it won't run on a Mac
Summary: 4 Stars

We had been browsing for an affordable means to scan our family vacation kodachrome slides into the digital format for 4-5 years now and never quite found one -- until the Plustek Opticfilm 7200. The reviews featured on Amazon convinced me to give it a try and they were right on! Right out of the box the software loaded, the thing ran, the images were crisp and the software intuitive. Too bad we have Mac computers, though! Even the MacBook Pro with its Intel processor and rosetta software couldn't open up the Plustek drivers. I think the SilverFast would have run with a downloaded upgrade for Mac, but the scanner wasn't going to interface no-how. So we borrowed my son's big gaming computer (by AlienWare) and it set up and ran with ease. We are scanning, adjusting, naming, filing, and saving onto an external hard drive about 20 per hour. Terrific!
