Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Plustek OpticFilm 7200 7200DPI Film ScannerCustomer Review: Excellent slide scanner Summary: 5 Stars
I got my unit quickly from Amazon, and wanted to see if it would meet my needs. I am aa amatuer photographer, but interested in high quality work. There were a few reviews that were negative on this unit and that caused me to be concerned. The price was right so I took a chance. After getting the unit, I had no problem connecting it or getting it started up. The quality of the scans is GREAT, better than I ever would have thought. I am seeing fine detail in slides that I can't even see when projected. Negatives work great also. As for color balance (one of the other complaints someone made) I have not had any problem, the controls allow you to color balance to your preferences, right from the scanner interface. I also use Photoshop, and do fine tuning there. Net of this comment is that is a wonderful, high quality unit, that works very well for me and my wife. We have over 20,000 slides and negatives to scan, from when we were just married 35 years ago till now. So we will be busy for a while... LOL
Customer Review: This is a great slide scanner Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Plustek Opticfilm 7200 scanner because I was looking for a cost-effective way to convert several thousand slides to digital format. I give it my highest recommendation. After you install the Opticfilm software, the scanner works perfectly. I briefly investigated the SilverFast software, but decided to use Microsoft Office Picture Manager instead. Using only the Opticfilm software, this scanner is wonderful. The four-slide tray is a good approach to hand feeding. Slide colors and focus are correctly rendered, and the scanner's default settings automatically crop out slide borders. At the highest jpg resolution (7200 dpi), scans take about 90 seconds per slide, and can easily be manipulated afterwards if you want. To clean your slides first, use a Giottos AA1900 Large Rocket Blaster and a 1-inch Static-Master Brush, both also available through Amazon. I cannot give this package a higher recommendation. This scanner works better than others I have used that cost 4 times as much.
Customer Review: If scanning slides....this is it! Summary: 5 Stars
I have about 1500 old family slides to scan. This unit works VERY well and its going much faster then I thought it would. I am scanning about 100 a day while I am working on other things. The resolution is more then enough for any need and the unit installed and worked perfectly right out of the box. For the price it cant be beat. It comes with two slide trays that hold 4 slides per tray. So while I am scanning one I am loading the other. Scanning times are longer for higher resolutions.
One piece of advice, get some compressed air! The scanner is very good and will scan all the hair and other small debris on the slides. I make it a point to shoot compressed air at both sides of the slides and that removes 90% of the dirt that had built up over the last 30 years.
If you are scanning slides with this unit (it also scans film negatives), you can always sell it for close to what Amazon is selling it after scanning your collection.
As always Amazon was great.
Customer Review: A Best Buy Summary: 5 Stars
My dad over the years has accumulated a sizable collection of slides that he has given to me. As I live in the digital age I needed an easy way to convert these to a digital format. It was down to this and another scanner and decided to go with it based upon previous Amazon reviews, as well as general appearance. As for setup it was done in as long as it took to load the software. Once loaded you hit the power button and then the button to initiate the imaging software and away you go. Being an IS person I wanted to see how easy it was to set up and begin scanning with little reading of the reference material. With just a few times that I needed to check the documentation I was scanning in no time. Considering that my dad's slides have been in the attic for close to 20 years the images that the scanner produced were very acceptable (issue due to heat, not the device or software). For the price I paid I have to say its a good scanner for the purpose it serves.
Customer Review: Excellent slide scanner for < $200 Summary: 5 Stars
The Plustek 7200 is an excellent slide scanner for the money. I have tried many methods to scan my 5000 slides -- going back to the 50s thru late 90s. This is the scanner that I will use for the massive conversion. The good news is that with a little effort, you can get the included SilverFast software to clean up dirty (dusty) slides. The bad news is: it takes some time/effort for each slide -- depending on their condition. SilverFast also does color correction, which is harder to work with, and somewhat effective -- once you get the hang of it. I expect that by the time I complete all 5000 scans, I will be pretty good at the color correction thing...
When I saw the < $200 price I was wary. The good reviews on Amazon (and elsewhere) convinced me that it was worth risking $200. Fear not, this is a real slide scanner> It produces high quality scans, and it is very effective for the amateur photographer / hobbyist.
