Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Plantronics DSP-400 Digitally-Enhanced USB Foldable Stereo Headset and SoftwareCustomer Review: Headset Contradiction?? Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered this from amazon about 4 days ago and received it yesterday, this was with free shipping, wow! The first thing I found funny about this headset is the "foldable" feature is supposed to appeal to those who travel. However, the EXTREMELY long cord and very large box that attaches on the wire makes it impossible for quick/easy travel. I fixed this problem by actually wrapping up the excess wire with twist ties but the large box is quite annoying.
As for sound quality. I use this headset only for Skype and World of Warcraft. The gaming sound is pretty good quality and it does work well with Skype. Luckily, I won't be traveling with this headset. So, basically, it does what I needed it to do. This is highly likely not the best headset out there, especially at a price tag of $40. It should be a little better. It is comfortable but the folding feature makes me wonder if the headset is not easily breakable or will wear very easily over time, and if it does, it will be useless. So, let's hope that does not happen! :knocks on wood: I'd do a little more research before spending 40 bucks on this one though. I think you could do better.
Customer Review: DSP-400 OK for Mac for hard-of-hearing Summary: 4 Stars
I am partially deaf with a need for more highs and less bass. I was using the Logitec 250 for my voip calls (an excellent set but a little lacking in highs) but when I turned up the volume, the bass drummed my ears. You can get more volume out of the 250, but the 400 has better highs and the bass doesn't bother my ears when I turn it up, but somethimes the volume isn't quite what I need. It's a much better situation however, than before. Plantronics told me that their prosono software would work on my Mac Mini, but it's not the case. When I went to the page to download the software, there was none for the Mac. Others complained about the long cord and the bulky dsp device, but it's nice to be able to lie on the bed with the long cord able to reach and the dsp device is a good weight to keep the cord from falling off the desk. The 400 is a bit flimsy, so be careful unfolding it and don't drop it. Always hook the clip to your shirt so you don't rip the wires out of the headphones. There are two wires and I've hit the "V" a couple of times when I was in too much of a hurry to clip the clip to my shirt. Good quality for music. Enjoy! Michael :)
Customer Review: I love love love this headset!!! Summary: 5 Stars
In one year, this is my third headset. My first one had a microphone that stopped working every few days (usually mid-conversation), and the second was a horribly uncomfortable bulky thing & the cord snapped irreparably after only 2 months of use.
I've now had this headset for 2 months and it's been DELIGHTFUL. I can have skype conversations without worrying about whether or not people can hear me or wincing with discomfort. It's very, very comfortable and lightweight and it works perfectly for skype. The only complaint I have is that for some reason it does not work with my recording software, there's a neverending hum if I try. But I bought it for skype & I have another microphone for my recording software so that's really not a problem for me.
As for the long cord, I actually like that. My laptop died a while ago and so all of my skype calls are made from my home office... sometimes I like having conversations where I'm not sitting at my computer so I have an extension cord set up so that I can go sit on the living room couch and talk to my friends. This long cord lets me walk even farther than I could before.
Customer Review: Excellent quality - questionable design Summary: 4 Stars
First the good news. This is a very high quality headset, for desktops. Voice quality is excellent. I've used it for Skype, Dragon and for voice overs on instructional videos. The microphone is clear, the noise canceling works well and it outputs good volume. I don't know if it has the range for singing but for spoken word it's great. The inline mute switch is a nice extra.
The headphones are also of good quality, easily the match of any headset in the price range, even those that lack mics. They are comfortable for extended wearing and seem reasonably durable.
The bad news comes if you want to travel with the headset. It is bulky, somewhat heavy for a folding set and the box on the end of the cord is rather large, though not as heavy as it looks.
I wonder what the designers were thinking. The ability to fold would lead me to think that this was designed for portability but the bulkiness and weight are a bit high, but not terrible, for that purpose.
Still, I'm very happy with the headset and can live with the bulk for the few times I need to take it out of the office.
Customer Review: Works well --> Plantronics DSP-400 Digitally-Enhanced USB Foldable Stereo Headset Summary: 5 Stars
Works as advertised. Quality of sound very good. I use it with skype and dragon naturally speaking (DNS). With the latter, it picks up my voice very well. I like the fact that it folds nicely so it fits in my drawer, also the fact that it has a long cord. It's also great that I can increase/decrease volume in one move, w/o without actually having to use my mouse. Same with the mute button - particularly useful for me when using DNS. The headphones are comfortable, and not too tight. The adjustable head piece/band also works well. On the downside, it is a bit bulky, and it has no hard case, so if you plan to travel keep this in mind. The mouth piece locks in place at some point and you can't move it further down - this is a bit of a problem if you are trying to read something from a piece of paper that is on your desk. It blocks your view somewhat, but it's not really that big of a nuissance, and probably no one would notice unless you use DNS. These are very minor issues, though... Overall, it's a good product for a reasonable price. Would buy again.
