Customer Review: Very pleased with my purchase
Summary: 5 Stars

I looked at TV's for about 8 months before I bought this one. I first thought I would go with the Panasonic 50" but after I saw this model and read its reviews I was convinced this was the better TV and it has not let me down. I have Comcast Cable and I hooked it up with some component cables direct from the cable box to the TV (HDMI Cables are on the way). The picture is awesome. I read online that you should turn down the color, brightness and contrast for the 1st 100-200 hours of use to reduce the chances or IR or burn-in so that is what I am doing now as I have only had the TV for about 5 days. I can't wait to dial in the settings a little better and see if having HDMI cables will improve an already great picture. If you are looking for a 50" TV and want a really great picture above all else this is the TV you have been looking for. I did not use the included speaker with my system since I have a home theater setup so I was only concerned with how the picture quality is and I can tell you it really is great. I will update this review once I get the HDMI cables and let you know what improvements if any they give.

***Update***

I bought HDMI cables and turned the pictures settings to the after break-in settings and the picture looks beautiful. I could only notice a very very subtle improvement in picture quality in switching from component to HDMI cables and even that could just be my imagination.

I have hooked this TV up to my laptop using the PC port and the picture was better than I expected. I changed the laptop resolution to 1024 X 768 and that worked very well for use with the TV. Playing World of Warcraft on a 50" plasma is fun but you need a long video cable to get far enough away from the TV so you don't get a headache.

I have not had any problems with burn-in or IR even after playing WOW for a could of hours with static images on the bottom of the screen.

Very pleased with my purchase...

We spent a lot of time researching HDTVs and where to buy them.

We are very happy with the Pioneer PDP-5070HD and also very happy that we purchased it from Amazon.

Beware of the online resellers, make sure you ask them upfront whether they are an authorized Pioneer reseller. Amazon is. The websites often imply one thing, but when you talk to a person, you find out the truth.

Be sure that whoever you buy from can deliver the manufacturer's warrantee. I talked to 3 online resellers who tried to sell me their own warrantee to replace the Pioneer warrantee. I also had a number of online resellers try to sell me the "upgraded" delivery services for hundreds of dollars.

Amazon delivered the TV at no charge, in under a week. The delivery people called in advance to confirm the delivery time, they came when they promised, they were very professional and carried the TV up a flight of stairs.

The TV itself is outstanding. It has eye-popping HD and almost as importantly, renders the old style low def standard TV channels excellently as well. A number of other HDTVs have big problems showing standard def pictures. Whatever HDTV you buy, make sure you compare performance of both HD and standard def programs.

It looks great in the room as well. The deep polished black color looks very classy and is easy to clean.

The cable card feature is great. You can save a bunch of money because the TV doesn't require an HD set top box.

One minor complaint. We use the V-Chip to filter programs for our children. When the V-Chip filter is enabled, it can take about a second or two after you flip to a channel before the show appears. After the kids are in bed and the V-Chip filter is off, the channels change instantly as you would expect.

The picture quality is outstanding! The TV was delivered in a timely fashion, and a basic install was performed by the delivery team (they just made sure the set-up menu displayed). This TV has good future potential because it has 1080p compatibility for HDMI and component video. I originally had some concern about buying over the internet, but so far things are great. The TV was shipped from a local merchant; therefore, it wasn't transported across the country. The price was better than the sale price at local chain electronics stores, and at the time I bought, shipping was free and no sales tax, which made the deal even sweeter.

If you have satellite, be sure to get the HD receiver/tuner.....even if you don't subscribe to any HD programming. I'm DEFINITELY not recommending Dish Network, but with Dish Network, you only get the HDMI, component video and digital optical audio connections with their HD receivers. Picture quality is much better if you use a HDMI or component video connection.
Also, from my experience, when doing your hook-up....if you have a amp/receiver that supports Dolby Digital Surround, do not connect the audio source from your HD satellite receiver to the TV and then connect the TV's digital audio output to your Dolby Digital supported amp. This arrangement works fine when the audio source is coming from the internal HD tuner, but I couldn't get it to work properly when the audio was fed thru the TV from an external HD tuner (I used HDMI from the external tuner to the TV's input 5 and digital optical from TV's digital out to the amp). Although, when I connected the audio from the HD satellite receiver directly to my amp via digital optical it worked great.

This is one great TV! I researched HD TVs for about 4 months before making a decision to purchase this one. It can be mind-numbing. There are quite a few very passionate reviewers out there that say LCD or plasma, but in the end they don't help.

So, for about $2,500 I received a fantastic TV perfect for my 9-10 feet viewing distance. The plasma picture is outstanding. For example I watch Planet Earth HD on it and get goose-bumps from the clarity, color and depth of the picture, it's just breathtaking. Or I watched the 10 Best Beaches on Discover HD (which btw. is awesome!) and it feels like I can go and pick up the sand, like I'm looking out of my hotel window. I'm not making this up, my friends mentioned it independently! There might be TVs out there that may be a little closer to the theoretical best, but then, who needs this?

The connectivity is outstanding and I had no problem hooking up all my components. The remote is easy to use and quite intuitive.

Of great concern among consumers seems to be the possibility of burn-ins. Plasmas nowadays only get burn-ins, when used inappropriately. When evaluating reviews I would be careful trusting opinions that are emotionally loaded. I have had no signs of any burn-ins whatsoever.

As for the delivery Amazon's White Glove service is in a category by itself! I was a little nervous getting a TV like this shipped, but the companies Amazon uses to ship this TV really handle it appropriately. They also unpacked the TV and put it on my stand. The TV is absolutely flawless! Great job!

I doubt you will be disappointed by this TV!

We did a ton of research on all the sites (Consumer Reports, Cnet, etc.) before we narrowed it down to either a Pioneer or Panasonic for a plasma. We visited several stores to view multiple models and decided we liked the Pioneer models best. We mounted our plasma above a fireplace and found that the all black casing of the Pioneers looked really slick on the wall. We were deciding between a local store's model Pioneer PDP-5071HD 50" and the Pioneer PDP-5070HD 50". We couldn't find much info on the PDP-5071HD model not even on the Pioneer website. After reading some reviews on Amazon we found one review that said that both models are the same and that the PDP-5071HD is made speciafically for that store. Since the store had the model PDP-5071HD marked up $1000 over Amazon's PDP-5070HD we decided to save our money and purchase the Pioneer PDP-5070HD 50" through Amazon. On top of the savings we also got free shipping. We couldn't be happier with the whole experience. The delivery was a week earlier than promised and we had no problems. The TV is now mounted on the wall and we are loving it. The picture is exceptional and is a whole new experience when watching TV. We decided to use a HDMI cable which elminated several other cables we used with our old TV and the picture seems to be better. We are using our BOSE surround sound speakers so we didn't even hook up the speakers that came with the TV, so I can't comment on sound. The nice part is that the speakers were detachable and you don't have to use them. Overall we had a great experience and the TV is working out great :)
