Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PIONEER BDR-205BK 12X SATA Blu-Ray Writer Black Drive BulkCustomer Review: Good drive / missing software. Summary: 5 Stars
I got this drive to backup photos and videos. I have all my stuff in a RAID array on a ReadyNAS and I also have a Windows Home Server but those are just one lightning strike away from oblivion. Burning my stuff to another disconnected media that I can keep anywhere just seems like a good idea.
My PC has Windows 7 64-Bit, Intel i7 CPU, and X58 chipset. I connected the drive to one of the SATA headers driven by the X58.
I installed the drive in what seemed to amount to a couple of minutes. I used Nero 9 that I already had installed and burned all my photos to a single layer BD-R LTH disc with no problems. The media I had was a 2x so it took a while. I think it was about 30 to 40 minutes. It wasn't a big deal to me I just went about my business and didn't treat my PC any differently while it was burning that I usually would.
I was playing around with the settings in Nero and found a setting called Defect Management. I enabled this for my next disc and the burn time doubled. I did some looking into what this Defect Management is and although a clear answer was hard to come by it appears that when this is enabled the drive burns a small section and then checks it before moving on to the next section to burn. If it reads back the section and it detects errors it rewrites it to another part of the disc. This burn and check adds quite a but of time to burning and is probably why some people say the speed is half what they think it should be. I was using 2x media so I would assume higher speed media would reduce the times quite a bit.
The one warning I have is I purchased this drive using Prime and it was listed as Sold by Electronica Direct and Fulfilled by Amazon. If you looked under more technical details it said that, "Software bundle includes:Cyberlink software suite". I did NOT get any software with mine. I let Amazon know and they said I could just send the drive back for another. I haven't yet decided if I will do this or not. I doubt any of them actually come with the software. I would like to hear from others as to whether theirs did or not.
So far overall I have burned 4 discs now with no problems so this drive looks to be a good one so far.
