Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Pioneer FH-P8000BT Double-Din In-Dash CD/MP3/WMA/AAC Receiver with Built-In Bluetooth, iPod Control, and Rear USB InputCustomer Review: Better choices out there Summary: 1 Stars
This is the worst tuner I've ever used, and my first FM tuner was a Motorola under-dash adapter in 1969! I bought Pioneer for their excellent sensitivity but, even though the FM sensitivity is rated high, I got terrible results in my Solara. At first I thought it was the rear window antenna and the need for the second diversity plug. My new replacement tuner proved that wrong. But even ignoring this defect, which is a big thing here in Westchester NY where reception is tough, the software that operates this thing is horrible! Until recently, my job was to test radio broadcast software, so I am used to complexity and learning menus. Even after a month I had to go to the manual - a poorly written PDF file written in broken English with errors that should have been caught - every time I wanted to do something, like pairing a new bluetooth phone. For example, the manual said to push the SAT button to change the satellite radio mode. There is no SAT button! Hitting buttons randomly I finally found the button that worked for that function. The big center knob on the unit attracted me at first, thinking it would make this unit easy to use for my wife, who does not take to gadgets. Not so, too many confusing ways to push it. And it is flimsy and will probably break in a year. Save yourself a lot of grief. I just bought the Pioneer AVH 3200BT. For $120 more, what a difference. Excellent reception, I paired the phone without even cracking the manual (hard copy, nicely edited). DVD and video off memory sticks to boot. One reason I will always buy car equipment from Crutchfield - tech support is GREAT and return policy liberal, otherwise I would have been stuck with a piece of junk. Pioneer should be ashamed to put their name on this.
Customer Review: Incredible sound, USB functionality has limitations Summary: 4 Stars
Pros:
1. Incredible sound.
2. Incredible sound.
3. Did I mention incredible sound ?
4. USB hard drive functionality.
5. Phone bluetooth works well.
Cons:
1. USB hard drive size is limited to 250 GB, 500 directories and 15000 songs. Since it has the 500 dirs/15000 songs limitation you can typically use about 60 GB (out of 250 GB) depending on your songs length, etc.
I am giving this unit a 4 start rating because of these limitations and because of the figuring out process that you have to go through in order to get the most of the USB hard drive functionality.
Pioneer FH-P8000BT USB hard drive mini-HowTo
I wanted to write a quick HowTo for the USB hard drive functionality so other people that want to use this feature don't have to spend 1-2 days like myself wondering how to get it working.
1. Use a USB hard drive that is mass media storage compliant.
2. Use FAT32Formatter (as specified by another review of this item). Partitioning and formatting this from linux (using fdisk, mkdosfs) will not work.
3. If you have more than 500 directories flatten them out since the unit won't read more than that. I wrote some scripts that do that automatically given a directory structure. Let me know if you need them and I'll post them here. They will only work with linux/unix.
4. You might have to buy an additional cigarette lighter to USB adapter in order to provide extra power to your hard drive. If your hard drive work by just connecting it to the USB cable of the FH-P8000BT you don't need this step. [...]
5. Enjoy !
Customer Review: Pioneer FH-P8000BT radio Summary: 4 Stars
I recently purchased this H/U from electronica direct. I thought for the price, it was an excellent deal. The U/I is a bit hard to get used to. The only downfall is that my receiver did not come with a user manual, just a dvd video which i may get around to watching at some point. I was able to locate the user manual online and download it and print the page(s) that i needed. As someone said before me, my stock speakers sounded good before, but now they sound great with the fine tuning i was able to do thru the U/I of the H/U.
All in All i would reccomend the product to anyone looking at it. Just make sure there is a PAPER manual with it. Not just a video.

I will post some pictures at a later time
Edit:
5 Months later... I really do enjoy my head unit. My dis-likes are the fact that it doesnt support 2 wireless phones at the same time with my fiance and i both in the car. Second, when she connects her phone to it, i have to go in and delete mine and re-pair it. So we connected mine to the receiver since i am the main driver, and hers to the after-market GPS.
I use the bluetooth to also play pandora at times from my phone, but hate that it doesnt cut off when a call is being made or received.
Dont use the CD slot much, but love the LIST option. Mainly use my usb flash drive for my music. Love the LIST option to be able to easily "flip" thru the different folders and skip the ones my fiance doesnt like.
Still not a five star review for the unit due to the fact that the bluetooth doesnt support 2 phones at once. The JVC 2 DIN head units do but trust the pioneer name more. So I went with this one.
Customer Review: Are all pioneer products this bad? Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this unit a little over 2 years ago when the stock CD player in my Subaru started eating CDs. I liked the built in Bluetooth and the iPod controls. I liked the clean lines and lack of preset buttons.
Since then, I have learned to hate the lack of preset buttons. If that were my only issue, I would be living with the unit.
About 6 months ago, the unit started randomly resetting itself. The audio would go away even though I could scroll through the menus. I had my stereo shop look at it and they found nothing wrong. This still happens on a random timeline from weekly to every other month, there's just no predicting it.
I emailed pioneer about it asking if it was a known issue and if so, what can be done to fix it. They informed that the unit was out of warranty and I would have to replace it. I suggested that their reputation was for building devices that last longer than 2 years and that it would be kind of them to split the cost of a factory rebuilt model with me. It is out of warranty and I'm willing to bare the cost of the that, but wanted to believe pioneer backed their products. I was wrong and they said no.
They also wrote that they hoped I would continue to buy their products in the future. I replied to them stating that I will not and, when asked, I will recommend pioneer products as good sounding, difficult to use products that last far to short a time. If you want something that sounds good, is easy to use, and has longevity, seek another product.
I'm currently searching for an affordable double din stereo that offers similar features to this one, but isn't made by pioneer.
Customer Review: Top Notch Deck Summary: 5 Stars
Seriously, who needs a dvd player in their dash? All you need is a good unit that plays your music, and this one plays it all. It will handle all the standard CD, CDR, mp3, WMA, AAC files along with iPod. The iPod controls are excellent. iPod is the only mp3 player I have tried and I suspect others won't work, at least not well. I was also able to play mp3s from my cell phone via bluetooth. Speaking of bluetooth, cell phone integration is a snap. I'm using a Sony phone with mine and it works perfectly with it. The contacts download to the unit so I never have to look at the phone. I also tried an iPhone and a Samsung SGH-A737. The iPhone worked great but the Samsung would not allow the the contacts to download.
The main reason I chose this one over other double dins is the clean, simplistic look this one has. This is easily the best looking one available. While many cd players of this size can have twenty or more buttons this one has ten plus a center control knob. The knob serves many functions much like an ipod click wheel. The navigation through the menus is not perfect but is still just as good or better than most other units. It has a ton of features to please almost anyone. High pass and low pass filters with sub controls and multiple settings for more complex systems yet it's simple enough for a drop in replacement for a factory radio.
My biggest complaint is the fact you have to buy separate hardware to enable HD radio. This will cost you an extra $80-$100 if you want this feature. It would have been nice to have but I don't think it's worth that much.
