Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips DVP5992 1080p HDMI Upscaling DVD Player with USB 2.0 and DivX UltraCustomer Review: Great product for the money Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this Phillips 5992 DVD player in December 2009. I have used it almost daily to play my video files from hard drives via the USB port. There are very few file formats this machine will not play. If it is an oddball foreign codec, the program is probably available in a format this DVD player can handle. I would suggest using no bigger than a 500 gig hard drive as it takes too long for a larger one to load the directory. If you have that many files it is probably wise to have them on two separate drives in case of a hard drive failure. It would take a long time to rebuild all the files on a 1 gig hard drive.
If you want to play from a hard drive, it will be necessary to reformat the hard drive it to fat 32 format BEFORE loading your video files onto it. The DVD player will not recognise the more modern formats on XP machines. Most hard drives will come pre loaded with the more modern format. You can check the format by connecting the drive to your computer and clicking on the drive, then properties. You can find freeware to format the disk on the internet.
The DVD player has given me no problems despite its heavy usage and there is a definate advantage to having the HDMI picture up conversion to 1080I. You can really see the difference with a good HDTV using an HDMI cable. I have a hard time telling the difference between blue ray and up converted standard DVD.
The region free hack is also a good feature. The instructions given for changing the regional code are a little confusing. It took a long time to figure out what was missing from the instructions given by another reviewer. Here is the hack fully written out.
Turn on the DVD Player.
Open the DVD tray (you will not be able to access the preference page if the tray is closed).
Press Setup button on the remote control.
Press right arrow on ring around large OK button to get to Preference menu. It is the third icon to the right at the top of the screen.
Press 1,3,8,9,3,1
Press the up arrow on the grey ring around the large OK button to move the region code from 1 to 0
Press the menu button to exit.
Thanks to M Wilson for the hack. The instructions were a little confusing. I hope the additional information I added helps remove some of the confusion.
I am thoroughly happy with this DVD player and its versitility. I would highly recommend it.
