Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD Player

Customer Review: 1080P does not work properly, tried 3 units
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this player as a bridge until the Blu-ray vs HD wars are over. I am using a Samsung 4061 TV that was made in July (it has the motherboard and software upgrades to avoid HDMI interface problems).

Pros:
- Good upscaling and performance on resolutions less than 1080P.
- Operating software is upgradable easily: download from web, burn to cdrom, and insert in dvd player that recognizes an upgrade and prompts through the process easily.
- Very reasonable cost.

Cons:
- Slow boot time.
- 1080P does not work without defect. There are white bars across bottom of screen, and occasionally the total screen will freeze and shift colors.
- Digital audio failed on the first unit, and after the audio failed... the video worked perfectly.
- Tried 3 units, the subsequent 2 did not have audio failures, but had consistent video problems. The problems took different times to manifest, I thought the last was a winner, but after running for over 1/2 hour, the video started having the problems noted above.
- I tried upgrading the DVD player software, but that did not cure the problem.
- Called Philips technical support, no help there.

So I took the last unit back, and ordered an OPPO DV-981 HD. The OPPO works perfectly, no problems with 1080P, and the picture is outstanding.

Customer Review: Inshallah, you get what you pay for - on a good day!

This Philips DVD player was bought to replace an earlier version purchased almost 3 years ago. That model finally went psycho, doing many weird things during playback, such as suddenly deciding there was "no disc", etc. Perhaps a diet of daily power interruptions, rather dusty environs, and occassional extremes of arid heat and chilly dampness accelerated its demise.
This newer model is not coded for, nor have I a code to make it, "all regions" unlike the programming I found for the old one. Still if only NTSC & PAL discs are in your collection, it does the job just fine. The white remote is a color choice that will show dirt very soon, but the DVD unit itself is great, is thin so it fits in tight cabinets on top of the TV, looks good, and was delivered VERY quickly at a 'great value' price. Not over-loaded with 'lookit my new toy' bells and whistles that nearly no one uses, but still not as intuitive as the older model. No matter, having had the first one, had no hesitation to buy this as a replacement, and will likely go back for a similar model when this one finally dies.

I could not test the up-converting feature as my multi-zone/multi-voltage tv is not HDTV capable, so I have no such discs in my collection at this time. All said and done? BUY IT!!! The Amazon price is again excellent, as was the service. - JS

Customer Review: Awesome upconvert dvd player!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased one of these dvd upconvert players and I am very impressed. Most upconvert dvd players are a bit pricey but this one is pretty ood for its features. I tested the upconvert to 1080p with Transformers (2007) and it looked really good, granted its not blu-ray quality. I have this dvd player connected to my Panasonic 46PZ85U 1080p Plasma TV.

Divx feature works nicely as well. This dvd player played most of the divx files I threw at it when I tested it. The picture quality still looked lovely. However, there were some cases were the divx movie's resolution would not be playable on this dvd player. I only tested AVI movie files since most of my movies are in that format.

The remote is pretty simple. I'm used to the remote since it pretty much is the same as most of the other Philips dvd player remotes. The response does lag at times but that isn't a major problem for me. I haven't gotten to tinker with the region=free settings on the player since I hardly watch any foreign movies.

Philips has been a good brand to me and it continues to be one with this dvd upconvert player. I would highly recommend this player to those who are looking for a really good upncoverting dvd player for an affordable price. You will not be disappointed!

Customer Review: Lousy Customer Service
Summary: 2 Stars

Nice looking unit but here are things that you need to know.
* The HDMI port does not work well. It works initially with problem with audio sometime. Finally, it stops working.
* USB port does not support all the drive with FAT or FAT32 format
* DVD drive often giving "NO DICS" message and finally it dies for good with this message.

Worse of all is the PHILIPS CUSTOMER SERVICE,
* They don't have any answers for your questions.
* They don't try to understand your issues to find out a malfunction in their unit to help you.
* They like to blame on something else except for their product.

Their customer service department and their company surely shows that they don't appreciate for your calls about the problems which would contribute a great deal to their improving of their products. It seems like all they want is to dance around with you on your questions so you could get off their back asap. They don't seem like to improve their products. All they want to do is for you to buy their products even though they know that some of their product would fail in a fairly short amount of time after the purchase.

Customer Review: $50 for a 1080p upconversion
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great upconversion dvd player to get until the format wars are over. Why spend $300 on an hd-dvd if the standard is going to be blu-ray?
for those of you that want a dvd player that upconverts dvds this is what you should get.
The biggest benefit of this dvd player is the usb connection port. after ripping your dvds, you can simply copy them onto an external harddrive, hook it up to the dvd player via the usb, and play your back ups.
i have a 750Gb maxtor hooked up with no problems.
however, ntfs isnt supported, so you will need to format the harddrive in fat32.
the only trade off made with the usb port, is the lack of optical out. this really hurts this system. but its $50.
the worst part about this dvd player is the remote. simply HORRID. The remote was engineered so both the front and back had the exact same shape. Kinda hard to do anything on a disc when you dont realize youre pointing the remote at yourself instead of the dvd player.
the setup buttons are much more prevalent then the actual usable buttons. it makes no sense to have tiny play/rewind buttons, yet huge menu buttons.
definetly pair this with quality programmable remote.
