Customer Review: USB avi files play great with this system
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this system mainly to play AVI files on my TV. I've had a D-Link DSM-320 system for a year now to play the files directly off my PC, but the picture always gets a bit squished to fit my TV even though I set it to the best setting for that. Plus, even though I have it hardwired to my network (not wirelessly) the large format video tends to be jerky on the D-Link system.

For my USB connection on the DVP5982 I'm using relatively inexpensive Kingston 1 or 4 Gig memory sticks to hold the files, and even with those the videos play great. Maybe once every three or four hours of viewing the video freezes for a second or two, but the audio keeps going, and when the video unfreezes after a few seconds it always fast forwards for a few seconds to catch up with the audio and keeps going fine. I haven't noticed any jerkiness. The videos always play in their original aspect ratios, so everything always looks like it's supposed to. Fast forwarding and rewinding works great, as compared to the D-Link which that was always an issues.

Some people have mentioned that the remote is an issue, but it has all the normal features you're looking for, and I've found it fine.

I've tested other file formats (music, photos), and they all work fine. Normal DVDs play fine as well, so no complaints in that area.

Overall this DVD player does exactly what I wanted it to do, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

Customer Review: Good for Temporary DVD Player
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this because I wanted a 1080p upconverting player for my new LCD TV. I plan to move it to our bedroom TV once some 5-disk carousel 1080P upconverting players come out.

PRO:

1. Cheap (Amazon has for $60 now...I paid ~75 a few months ago)
2. DVD Player plays everything so far, including home video DVD+R, my wife's Chinese VCDs, etc.
3. Picture looks fine as far as I can tell.
4. It has a nice memory feature that remembers where the disk was last stopped. But there are problems (see CONS).

CONS:

1. SLOW SLOW SLOW. It takes forever to load a disk, etc. Controls are very sluggish.
2. It has a nice memory feature that remembers where the last disk stopped. But if you have a disk that lets you chose WIDESCREEN or FULLSCREEN at the start, and you select the wrong one, it is VERY hard to get back to that menu, almost impossible, even by taking the disk out.
3. Flimsy tray.
4. Controls in general not intuitive.
5. USB works, but does stutter on video played from there and not very user-friendly. I don't think I'll use this much.
6. Did I mention it is slow?
7. Sometimes drops down to 480p for no apparent reason.

My 10 year old Toshiba DVD player worked much better, except it didn't upconvert of course.

I would give this 2.5 Stars, except Amazon makes us go to an integer.

Customer Review: Unbelievable Value
Summary: 5 Stars

Heard about this DVD player from a buddy who bought one for his 64" TV and loved it. My brother's player crapped out after 7 years and so I got one for his 46" Sony LCD Proj, and went ahead and nabbed one for myself and my 42" Sony LCD Proj.

Setup was simple using HDMI, and menus are simple and intuitive. I only needed a quick scan of the manual to get my bearings and to make sure I understood everything. At first I set it on Auto, but I'm not 100% sure that it works as you'd like it to. First couple of things I watched (2003 WSOP DVD & Blades of Glory) were definitely better than my old standard DVD player, but didn't blow me away. I figured the player was doing the best it could with them since I set it on Auto. Then I stuck in Transformers one afternoon and a little ways in decided to see what it was running at. Well I'm pretty sure it was 480p, because I had to hit the button on the face of the player 3 or 4 times to force it to 1080i (the highest my TV supports) and WOW what a world of difference. Its certainly not legitimate HD quality, but for a $60 upconvert DVD player, its pretty mind blowing. I'd say its probably about 85-90% as good as pure HD quality. I am just a guy who loves HD and by no means a videophile, so this player is plenty satisfying to me until I decide to take the plunge into HD DVD. Don't hesitate to purchase.

Customer Review: Very good
Summary: 4 Stars

This product does improve the image of a standard DVD when displayed on an HDTV. It certainly doesn't compare with true HD, but it's definitely better than a standard player.

The remote is a little disappointing. Small, and a few buttons with dual purpose, which is kind of annoying. Also lacks an open/closebutton, which means you have to use the one on the unit and wait for the tray to open.

Operation is also a little slow, I'm referring to load time, as well as other operations. There's just a little lag when doing just about anything. Another unfortunate omission is a button that takes you directly to the root menu. The one that says menu takes you to the episode menu, not the episode list.

It definitely plays DivX files better than my old Toshiba did. The Toshiba showed up all kinds of flaws on an HDTV, and those are significantly reduced with this player.

I decided to append this review. The longer I have this player the more I like it. In fact, I'm SO glad I made this decision, while waiting for a blu-ray player with the features I want, to come out. The flaws in design I mentioned, they still hold true, but the image it produces really is damn good. It's almost as good as an HD broadcast on digital cable. Very close. DivX performance is almost as good. For the price, I don't think you can beat it.

Customer Review: Very impressed!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've only had this player for about a week, and so far I love it.

Yes, the only difference between this and the 5960 is the 1080p upconversion, but that's a pretty major addition if you ask me. The 5982 is cheaper than the 5960 anyway, so you might as well get the 5982 even if you don't have a 1080p TV yet.

But I do have a 1080p TV, and if you do as well, this is definitely the one to get. The upgrade in picture quality over a standard DVD player is instantly noticable. Your standard DVDs will look fresher immediately; you definitely will notice the difference in resolution. Of course, your DVDs won't look as good as Blu-Ray disks, but that isn't to be expected from *any* up-converting player.

At around $70, the price on this player can't be beat. A 1080p upconverter for $70???!!? Are you kidding me??!?! Amazing! A few months ago you had to pay over $200 for this capability!

I also love that this can be made into a universal region-free player with a few button presses on the remote. The code is readily available on the Internet. I recently purchased a set of Region 2 DVDs from the UK, and once I put the 5982 into Region 0 (region-free) mode, the DVDs play no problem.

I highly recommend the Philips DVP5982. You just can't beat this level of quality and this feature set at the price!
