Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD Player

Customer Review: Great DVD Player for the Money
Summary: 4 Stars

This player has excellent quality output. Playing .Avi files and some .Mpeg's too (not sure how many types of .mpeg's but played the ones I have tested so far). Also the USB port on the front is an awesome feature. You can put a movie file on a memory stick (thumb drive) lets say a 700mb .avi on a 1GB Thumb drive, pop it in the front of the DVD Player and press the USB button on the remote, Bang, It plays. No more need to burn CD's. (Although you could use a DVD-RW and keep burning movies on them as well).. Theres a button on the front that you can hit to put it into 1080i or 1080p mode. Video files play amazingly clear, if they're ripped well.
Im not crazy about the remote. I dont yet see a function that will tell me how far into the movie I am, and how much is left. The remote is small and limited functionality, but if you dont like too much clutter on functions on a remote, it still does anything you need to do. One other thing I havent figured out yet is this "sleeper mode" function. If I pause the movie, 1/2 hour, or 1/hour, I'm not sure the time, it goes to sleep. You then have to turn it on, restart the movie, and scroll sometimes a long way to where you were. (on video files .avi) I've turned this funcion off, yet it still goes to sleep. NOTE: I never read the manual ! :) So following the easy screen menus may not be the solution. Final opinion, Great player for the money, plays most everything, USB function is great, HDMI, Great picture, Fast enough from startup (some players take forever) Cool looking, sleek black, I'd say its a winner.

Customer Review: Unreliable. Cheaply made.
Summary: 1 Stars

I have a lot of experience with Philips DVD players as for a long time they were the only ones doing the Divx playback, which is a very important feature. Divx playback on this machine is clunky, and seems to be a few frames slower than it should be. It takes 5-10 seconds for the unit to power on, but then all the new players seem to be doing that.

I was going to take it back soon after I bought it due to the playback issues and menu system with the Divx movies. When you power on the unit and put a DVD full of Divx clips it opens a basic menu, however after you play one of these movies, you CANNOT return to the menu. This means you can't play another movie unless you know where it is on the disc and skip to it. Basically, this player has the functionality of an ipod shuffle. Add that to the fact that it seems like you are watching divx at 3/4 speed.

As if these reasons weren't enough, yesterday the sound stopped working on Divx files. I placed a DVD, and the sound. A few minutes later tried the same DVD and it stopped playing sound. Checked connections, and no problem there, so it turns out that this player is a piece of crap in terms of reliability, although I already knew that and purchased because of cheap price.

I'm getting the Pioneer for $[...] also on amazon, it has great reviews. Don't buy this unit unless you like to be annoyed by slow command responses, terrible divx playback, and some type of malfunction in under 6 months. I will be staying away for the entry level Philips devices.

Customer Review: you won't find one better for the price, plays all formats
Summary: 5 Stars

i bought this upconvert dvd player b/c i wanted to be able to watch all of my old dvds on an hdtv - this thing is awesome. the picture quality (either hooked up via component rgb cables or hdmi) is crisp and clear, and you can watch all of you movies at full 1080 resolution.

the other thing i love about this player: it plays all of the divx 3.11a (the hacked version before it became official), divx 4 and divx 5 movies i have that i burned onto cdrom. for dvds you record yourself, the built-in menu screen lets you select which movie you want to watch and determines the format automatically.

one other cool feature: let's say your watching a movie and you pause it to come back later or to watch another movie...well, it remembers where you left off, even if you've put in and watched a completely different movie...not bad.

the remote could look a little nicer i suppose, but that aside, all of the functionality is there. and the menus, albeit a little non-flashy, give you all the settings you need to configure it for different tv setups. it also has the nice feature of being able to set the output screen format (16:9, 4:3, etc.), so you don't have to see the bars on an hdtv. the player itself is also nice and compact, so it won't take up much room in your tv cabinet.

bottom line: excellent price, plays every dvd/divx movie disc in every variety of formats i've ever tried with it, can set a lot of picture format options, looks great on an hdtv.

Customer Review: Works well, once it works
Summary: 4 Stars

Pro(+)
- Price
- Picture quality

Con (-)
- Sluggish response
- Horrible menus
- Junk remote
Overall I am happy with this buy. The player is a nice size: slim and shallow but a standard width. The player looks good and works with my Samsung 32" 450 series TV (LN32A450) over HDMI without any problem.

I assumed upconverting was a total gimmick. After swapping back and forth between the same DVD in my old player and this one, I'm a convert. Even turning the upscaling off on this player makes for a good comparison; however, trying to do so highlights the limitations of the player.

It is SLOW to respond to commands and has HORRIBLE menus. With the TV on and the correct source selected it takes 10+ seconds to go from standby power (with a DVD already in!) to first screen flicker. It's not that 10s is the end of the world; it's just much slower than the average DVD player and a noticeable wait each time I use it.

Combine the counter intuitive menus with the slow response and initial setup is really frustrating. [1 of 5 for initial setup] The slow response time and junky remote make getting a movie going less than a joy. [3 of 5 for all subsequent interactions directly with the player] Watching a movie and having it look that good for less than $70, more than covers up the problems. [5 of 5 for picture quality]

Verdict: $70 very well spent.

Customer Review: Great DVD player - not great USB interface
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this player with the intent to mostly watch upscaled regular DVD's as well as DivX/XviD movies on both a burned CD-R/DVD-R but also to watch from my USB thumb drive.

Watching from DVD's is awesome, and I'd give this unit 5 stars if I never used the USB function. But I do, and when I watch movies via USB, the video is choppy, and if there is any fast motion it starts stammering both video and audio. In addition, if you'd like to review/rewind a bit or fast-forward forget-about-it! It basically just stays put like it's paused and then if you are patient and wait a good 3-4 minutes, you might rewind enough to go back 1-2 minutes in the video. But since the player gives you zero feedback (it looks to be paused) on where the rewind progress is, you have to guess where it's at in the process. So if you didn't go back far enough, you have to wait another 3-4 minutes when you start this laborious process over again. It's totally not worth it to instant replay.

I don't really care the the USB truncates the file names in the menu (which it certainly does), but the fact that you can't watch anything with any kind of action makes this function a dog; It's OK if you watch something with less action than a Jane Austin PBS movie - perhaps a lecture at a podium might be OK.

I think this problem might be due to this player being 1.1 USB, and perhaps a 2.0 will solve this problem. Anyways, this unit is going back today.
